I wondered how someone became a Moderator. I assume it's a time consuming job and some people have to monitor the forum overnight, plus no doubt, you make a few enemies.

TV, I'm too angry to go for a ride, you get all the perks and I can't even get "Instigator" put under my name!!
Oh...don't be, friend. As long as you successfully side-track 20 threads, you too can become an official Instigator. At 50 your a Supreme Instigator and at 100......you guessed it, a company car :). I saw you're already an Honorary Instigator, just keep chippin' away and before you know it....zing.....a chaffer ;).

When I read that, I scrolled up to see my avatar..."did Angus actually make me an "Honorary Instigator?", my hands were trembling with excitement, as I scrolled up to see..."naw, it didn't happen, oh, shucks"!! lol. :(

If you spend much time in the "Outside" ("Out there") forum, you already are :).

Sorry Jerry, I was referring to the list on the wall of the Executive Washroom. ....use the cat door......;).

I wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers here. In other forums I frequent the moderator status is a distinction awarded to certain members by the forum owner because they have earned it. Earned it by contributions, helpfulness, attitude and time on the forum. It's different here. That's fine. That's all I'm going to say about it.

There's a reason why we don't do that here. We select our mods from people who are very active in the forums, help out members, and report posts to us. Basically, we look for people who will benefit the forums (I was an exception :p). Not the people who are the most active/post the most. This is one of the reasons the Veterans section was made, and why people are made veterans. If we gave out Mod to everyone who was active, this forum would not run the way it should. Some people don't want mod, and some just aren't suited to the position.

Houdini and Wiz both fit your description to a T with the exception of the snitch part. It is much clearer to me now. Thank you...

Maybe the Moderator selection process needs to be explained in full detail to those of us who are confused by the influx of moderators with less forum time under thier belts.:)The Wiz!

It's simple really Wiz
All us old timers came to ecf during a different time and consequently have different attitudes then these new whipper snappers with only a month or two under their belt
Our clay has hardened, we can no longer be molded and shapped to embody the values of the new new ecf

There is no place for us in ecf's new order, that's why the vet subforum was created, to put all of us old timers out to pasture
It's basically just a retirement home for those of us who still stick around

But Wiz if you really want mod status there is still hope for you, if you kiss .... for exactly 294 days in a row, on day #295 you will automatically be given mod status, it is a lil known unwritten rule here
Good luck with that man!!!

Oh come on, K-Sound. You know perfectly well that's not why I created the Vets forum.

Put out to pasture? You really think I wanted to do that? Contrary to some people's beliefs, I am not a total weapon, and I do try to do what's right by the membership. The vets forum was just something I thought up one night that seemed like a nice idea for the long standing members, primarily because so many of them complained that the community feel had been lost.

I just thought it would be a nice idea, that's all - no ulterior motives. Well, actually, perhaps one ulterior motive: It also seemed a good idea to have a place where I could canvass opinion on the forum changes with the long standing members, whose perspective is very important to me.

As to our moderator intake - we do this in a variety of ways. We put up application threads from time to time, we look at individual enquiries and, occasionally, we look for people with specific attributes - for example, one of the reasons Timtam was invited is because, being an Aussie, he can be on the forum at times that other mods cannot.

Houdini, I'm really sorry if you feel excluded by not being invited. If you'd like to apply, perhaps you'd shoot me a PM?

Sharky, you think reporting spam, racism, homophobia etc is snitching? Fair enough. I don't.

Nice try Joe. Do not think you can pigeon hole me with that remark. It has nothing to do with rascism, homophobism, or spam. It has to do with suspect actions by some mods here that give the appearance of personal vendettas. Selective enforcement whether real or perceived is a problem you are facing and needs to be corrected. Perception is just as much a reality as the truth whether you like it or not.

Well, you have some suggestions?

I mean, I can keep telling you that we don't selectively enforce the rules, and you can keep disbelieving me. It's somewhat of an impasse, and I don't really know what to do about it, save for letting everyone into the moderators private area so they can see exactly how much discussion goes into making decisions.

Obviously I'm not going to do that, so what suggestions do you have? I'm all ears - please PM me.

Back to your OP, my point still stands - the vast majority of reported posts reference spam and offensive content. It's not snitching to report that.
