ive always had great wicking with both rope and 500 mesh, but mesh carries flavor better than rope. even with mesh wrapped under your wick on a rope build, the flavor is more muted than just pure mesh. some flavors this will be more evident on, like bakery vapes. tobaccos lose a slight amount of flavor with rope. for a fruit vape, rope aint half bad.
YMMV
Lately I've been using 3/32 rope, with 500 mesh just under the coil. Prior to that, I've been a confirmed mesh only user. But the rope/mesh combo is an easy, quick build. I just use enough mesh to go around the rope about 2 times; about 9/16 inch. I really don't find that this set up mutes flavor at all, and it wicks very well.

That's good to know. I've only used thinner rope 1/16" I believe. So it's good to hear the thicker rope offers better results. Have you tried different varieties of flavors on it?

Yes, I've run the gamut. I DIY all my juice, usually 50VG/50PG, all sorts of flavors. I used mesh only for probably 2 years; but just started fooling with ss rope a couple months back. So far, I've been pretty happy with it. I don't oxidize the rope at all. I just use a small piece of mesh under the coil area, and pulse oxidize it.
