My daughter played in the Denver Citywide Marching Band while in High School. We went to the Parade of Lights in Downtown Denver every year and all I have to say

One of my favorite Christmas memories, and a little wacky was one Christmas when my son was little. We were barely getting by, and I had absolutely no money for Christmas anything. We didn't even have a fake tree to put up since I'd always do something to get a real one. Work at a tree lot, one year a friend cut us one, wait til Christmas eve when they were super cheap....whatever, but this year nothing worked. So.....I brought out all the ornaments, tree blanket etc, and we decorated ...... wait for it............the recliner!! Wrapped the lights around the back of it, hung ornaments from that, put the tree blanket in the seat etc. We then would go grab stuff that the other already owned, but wouldn't miss for a week or so, and wrapped them up. It was still a nice surprise to open each gift, and hear the obvious....I wondered where that went. lol Even though he didn't get anything new, my son still thinks very fondly of that Christmas. You can either focus on what you don't have, or focus on having fun anyhow!

Ii love Christmas as it's OK to act like a kid again, and no one thinks anything about it....I do love the Chipmunks and when this came out...I just adore it and sing along with it.....

I like many of the country singers doing Christmas....I don't even get it myself, since I am not a huge country fan(at least not the new stuff)...

I have lived in this area all of my adult life... and for as long as I can remember, this one little secluded part of town just about a mile or so South of here (called 'Sleepy Hollow') has put on the most incredible display of Christmas lights and decorations that I'm sure is one of the best around anywhere!! I think the City puts up the lights in the trees so they are all uniform, and picks up some of the cost for the electric bill, too...

There are only a couple of streets leading in or out of there, and during the Holiday Season, the police block off all but 2 of them to keep the traffic flow going in a certain direction... I never get tired of seeing it, and thank the people who live there for putting up with the inconvenience each year so that the rest of us can enjoy it!! smile.gif

It really needs to be seen in person, but this guy did a pretty good job of capturing it on video...

The decorations are usually kept up thru New Year's Eve, and one night I was coming home kinda late from somewhere that took me right past the entrance to the neighborhood, so I decided to swing by and see them while I still had a chance. Without the steady stream of cars leading the way, I got hopelessly lost... but I really didn't mind because it is just such a magical place!!

I had a tape of Christmas Music playing in my car stereo, and just kept driving around until I found my way out...

I love this story and would have it memorized each year by the time Christmas actually came....I wore out this record and 3 needles in one year .... I still listen to at least 3 times a season......
(I don't expect you to listen to the whole thing,I know it's long... but maybe just the first 2 mins..It's so soothing)...

Bri's story of his lost "first love" reminded me of this.

I have always loved trains and had train sets growing up. One year for Christmas, when I was about 6 years old, I asked Santa for a train set. When I woke up Christmas morning, there were two train sets on the living room floor; an HO scale set and a much larger Lionel O scale set.
I was so excited
excited4.gif
and, of course, I liked the Lionel set better. I wanted to play with the Lionel set, but the large, complicated transformer wasn't plugged in or connected to the tracks, so I played with the HO set.
...
When my parents got up and came in to see how we were doing with Santa's presents, I begged to play with the Lionel set. My father connected the transformer and let me watch, excitedly and impatiently, as I waited for my turn! He showed me how to do some things on the transformer, and finally let me play with them. But I was ultimately informed that those were his and the others were mine. So this is my lost "first love" story.
:( . .

This video is something of what his train set looked like that day, with the black locomotive, coal tender, a few cars, and a red caboose.

Notice the whining engine sound, and only a simple headlight on the locomotive that dims depending on the speed of the train. Lionel O scale trains, and now MTH O scale trains, have come a long way since then. This story took place in the mid-50's, so his Lionel set was probably made in the 30's or 40's.

This is the childhood Christmas morning that I always think of first.

:)

Another tradition around here is that during the month of Dec. (until Xmas Eve) The local Police Dept. 'escorts' Santa around town, with his sled perched on top of a police cruiser... stopping to hand out candy and let people take photos.

The schedule is posted in the newspaper and online as to what streets/neighborhoods and times he will be visiting each night... with some having to be rescheduled in the rare event of rain that day... LOL!!

One year I was at a friend's house and we heard some sirens outside. When we went out to see what was going on, there was Santa!! So he ran back in to get a camera while I waited in line for my photo opp...

Dreams of Christmas trains. Come on, Santa. How about giving me another set this year?

In comparison to the last video, listen to the sounds that this locomotive makes, and check out the lights on it, and the puffs of smoke. That's a PG or VG liquid making the puffs! (probably PG) This is a pretty nice layout, too. How about the car that dumps coal, and the motorized uploader for it? :D And then it can reload the "coal dump car" on the other side! At about 8:20 you see lighted passenger cars.

That was fun, for me anyway. :)

Kitty's post ties nicely into another nice holiday memory: Christmas around here is often sunny but not hot... but sometimes it is. And when that nice weather coincides with a good north swell from a storm in Alaska.... One Christmas break from college, we had such a combination right on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. One of my friends and I were out in the water until dark. I came home that night, got cleaned up, celebrated Christmas Eve (along with the music and cookies, etc.) and Christmas morning (my parents still gave me "Santa" gifts...), and then hopped in the car before 9 am with my buddy and hit the surf for another entire day. It really can be a strange juxtaposed holiday around here if you think to much about it--but for those of us who are natives, it's just life.

Our first Christmas as a family was pretty tough. We had a 6-month-old son and my husband was unemployed, so we didn't have much to work with. Even though he was so young, we felt dismayed that we wouldn't have a real first Christmas. We bought and wrapped what we could for the baby, which wasn't much. My husband's much older sister went and got us a small, fully decorated tree, and his mother bought extra presents for the baby. The part that touched me most was that she also bought an extra present for my husband and me to give to each other.

I have no idea why I remember this so much or why it gives me such warm fuzzy feelings, but I was probably 4 yrs old, and I remember sitting in the living room with my dad, no lights on except the tree, in my jammies and fuzzy robe, eating some buttered crackers. I still love buttered saltines. It's a wonderful memory, even if I really have no idea why really.

My first Christmas after moving away from my parents (other than college) was a geeky paradise. My roommate and I put up a tree but then realized we had no ornaments or lights. We hit the 99-cent store and picked up some lights, little toy cars, and some tiny Star Wars figures. And that's what our tree was decorated with (I had a pic somewhere, but I don't know where it is....). Oh, and for the top, we didn't have a star or an angel or anything--we used a cow puppet.
