Bri's story of his lost "first love" reminded me of this.
I have always loved trains and had train sets growing up. One year for Christmas, when I was about 6 years old, I asked Santa for a train set. When I woke up Christmas morning, there were two train sets on the living room floor; an HO scale set and a much larger Lionel O scale set.
I was so excited
and, of course, I liked the Lionel set better. I wanted to play with the Lionel set, but the large, complicated transformer wasn't plugged in or connected to the tracks, so I played with the HO set.
...
When my parents got up and came in to see how we were doing with Santa's presents, I begged to play with the Lionel set.

My father connected the transformer and let me watch, excitedly and impatiently, as I waited for
my turn! He showed me how to do some things on the transformer, and finally let me play with them. But I was ultimately informed that those were
his and the others were mine. So this is
my lost "first love" story.

This video is something of what his train set looked like that day, with the black locomotive, coal tender, a few cars, and a red caboose.
Notice the whining engine sound, and only a simple headlight on the locomotive that dims depending on the speed of the train. Lionel O scale trains, and now MTH O scale trains, have come a long way since then. This story took place in the mid-50's, so his Lionel set was probably made in the 30's or 40's.
This is the childhood Christmas morning that I always think of first.
