Another place I seem to hit every year is Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh PA. I am not sure whether their Christmas display or their Spring one is my favorite. I am already in a holiday funk of some sort and will need all the festivities this year. The last half of this year has been a little rough on me. I lost my cousin that I was very close to on Labor Day. She is the one that taught me to ride horses and we used to do all the gaming events and several endurance rides together. Then lost my MIL last month. Other than mom and Pops, the rest of the family is mostly on the West coast or in Alaska. Neither of my boys are married and no grandkids... yeah... I need the Holiday Cheer bug to bite me in the rear or something. :D

In the time before Christmas in 1979, my parents took me to Toys'R'Us and in round about ways tried to find out what I wanted from Santa. At first, I mentioned the Lego Galaxy Explorer...

Later on that trip, I fell in love with the Micronauts Rocket Tubes.

My mom made some excuse and my dad decided to pull me over to the bike section, but not before I saw my mom walking back to the Lego section with Galaxy Explorer firmly in hand. Of course, that year, Santa left the Rocket Tubes under the tree.... Imagine that!

One of my best gifts when I was young came when I was in the 2nd grade. My parents bought me a manual typewriter. It was something I really, really wanted and I remember that I kept looking at all the presents under the tree and none of them seemed to be typewriter size or shape. Christmas morning I got up to discover a package that wasn't there the night before...it was the typewriter... I used that typewriter for many years, until after I got married and hubby had an electric one.

I don't get to do a lot of things I used to do for Christmas for a variety of reasons, but one thing I can still do is watch my Christmas movies. Thanks WifeyCo for reminding me. Some of my faves are:

Miracle on 34th St (still gotta get this one on dvd)
It's a Wonderful Life
White Christmas

And I still love the really old kiddy ones from my childhood
Santa Claus is coming to town
Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer
There are a few others but can't think of em right now

Good one, Count! :toast:

Lego has definitely stood the test of time with kids.....kind of like Playdoh has. My 3 year old Grandson is absolutely bonkers about "Lego Man" and the vast plethora of Lego sets. I think now he's starting to move towards the "Transformers" stage though...

Lego is one of the toys that I kept from my childhood. Almost all of it is now mixed up with the Lego that my kids have (and they have SO MUCH!). My son is obsessed with it and a my daughter likes to build with it as well.

While looking for the pics in my post, I saw that the Galaxy Explorer set (opened, but in the original box with all the pieces) was going for $350. I still have the box, the instructions and probably all the pieces among the piles that we have here.... but toys are for playing.

Wifey's post on pong reminded me of the lost Christmas when my friend got an Atari (it wasn't called a 2600 then) for Christmas. He and I would regularly spend the nights over at each others houses, but during the week after, I think I must have seen my parents for all of two minutes. We were glued to it (I loved Air-Sea Battle). We also began to notice my friend's dad getting up later and later in the morning and finally realized that he would play the games himself after we went to bed--and about the only time we weren't playing.

How about this classic......I love the story of "Freddy & Sam"......Hallmark used to have a special way to get you....

I am so glad I am not the only one who enjoys them....

Hey Liblue!

Great...I love it. The commercials (and TV shows) of yesteryear had sooo much thought, substance and morality to them. Everything nowadays seems riddled with too much slapstick comedy, "Reality" crap... or no real plot at all. I DO however...LOVE the Suburu "Dog" commercials!

We got this for my son and daughter and they played this game until I thought I was going to go crazy. I wanted to hide it, I couldn't get them to do anything else.
