Hi guys

Took the plunge and got a "Gold" mixing kit on order from The Alchemists Cupboard. Price seems reasonable for the kit

DIY Mixing Kit Gold

I notice they state all liquids are prepared in a clean room, and the pictures look all clean and tidy, with hats/gloves/coats...

At the risk of sounding like a total noob (which I am) I'm guessing the conditions at home just have to be well ventilated, take care when handling the liquid (gloves/googles etc) and make sure the room is clean etc.

Any other precautions to take?

I was going to set up the spare room as my mixing room, it get very little through traffic, got some nice big clean work surface and the window is right next to the "prep area" - will this be sufficient, as well as taking care when handling?

Thanks in advance!

Just use common sense. You're getting 72mg strength nicotine, which is strong, but not crazy. Just minimize the amount of time that you spend with the top off of the nicotine solution bottle. Get your mixing container ready, open the nic container, draw up what you need, transport it to the mixing container, put the excess back in the nic bottle, and seal it. Once this is done, the rest of the process is not hazardous.

I have been doing my DIY on a clean surface placed on top of my woodworking bench. Definitely not the cleanest of environments, but hey. I breathe the sawdust when I am building furniture, so I figured vaping a small bit of it won't kill me. You should be absolutely fine using your spare room.

Yes, common sense precautions, but no need to go overboard. You don't need a sterile clean room and a hazmat suit.

I mix using 100mg/ml in my bathroom, which does not have great ventilation. I do what MD_boater described, minimize the amount of time the nic bottle is open, put the cap back on right away. Although I do this more to prevent accidental spilling than to minimize vapors. I've never notice any fumes or vapors from the 100 mg/ml. Of course, I don't put my nose right down to it and take a big whiff, but it doesn't seem to immediately evaporate and fill the room with an invisible nicotine cloud, lol.

If you get some high strength nicotine on your skin, wash it off quickly, but don't panic and risk causing an even bigger spill. I've gotten 100 mg/ml on my skin numerous times, and not suffered any noticeable effects. I'm not saying it's great to do, should definitely be avoided, but you are not going to immediately pass out if a drop gets on you.

Just make sure you take the time to concentrate on what you are doing, measure carefully and put your stuff away where pets and kids can't get to it. I always use gloves to handle the nic. And I use a tray so if there is a spill, I can wash out the tray and not have nic running off the table and all over the carpet:)

Yes, use common sense, a reasonable level of cleanliness and take the time to concentrate and you will be fine. Keep the bottle of nic closed except while measuring.

Nice one - I'll bear that in mind and try to be quick when using the nicotine.

Can't wait to get going actually :)

Not too "quick". Be cautious, but practical. I wasn't suggesting that you rush to the point where you might cause an accident.

Like Spazmelda said, it's not really the fumes we are concerned about. It is a spill that you do not want to deal with. And yes, Use gloves.

Do a little reading before getting started. It may not be as simple as what ever included instructions may indicate.

Read my blogs before getting started

E-Cigarette Forum - dannyv45 - Blogs

then read hoosier's blogs.

E-Cigarette Forum - Hoosier - Blogs

then read the stickies at the top of the page.

this will explain a lot of the how's and why's and likely help you get it right the first time as well as help you avoid some fustration along the way..

Another piece of advice I'll chime in with is :

Try and do your mixing at a quiet time in the house. There's nothing worse than having four bottles that you've already mixed your nic solution/PG/VG and your part way through adding the flavouring when the phone rings/there's a knock at the door/the Wife has lost the car keys/the Kids are arguing over the TV remote - you get the idea

Because of this, I usually do my mixing when everyone is out and the phone is unplugged. That way I don't put double caramel in the chocolate caramel mix or forget to add the pineapple to the pinacolada :D

My house is literally a nut house, and have an uncanny ability to switch off to everything around me. Saying that, I did mix today when the place was empty, so rather than rely on my usual "ability to not go mental" I will heed this advice and mix in silence.

Great advice, as always :)

Mine is usually the same - an absolute mad house. That's why I normally go crazy with the mixing when I get the rare chance to do it.

Hope your new juices turn out well. It's a great feeling when you mix that first really good batch :D

Cheers bud!

I'm not holding out high hopes on the #1 batch being nice, but meh, I made it. Bit like my first attempt at rolling, was a disaster, I still smoked it ha-ha

:D

You'll be fine. The way I see it, there's no such thing as a bad mix, you can always use the juice when you've got a cold and can't taste it

Transfer the nicotine into smaller 'working' bottles. That will avoid a disastrous spill if one presents itself. I get my 100mg nic 120ml's at a time, and I transfer that immediately into a 60ml, 30ml, and 2 - 15 ml amber glass bottles, then rotate it thru a small working bottle. When the 30 ml bottle is gone, leaving 30ml's in the 15's, I reorder to never run out.
