So I have had the smok Procolor for about a year now. In the last few days it is getting very hot (tank is hot, mod is hot, batteries are hot) at 25w on a q4 coil in prince tank. Batteries used to last 6 hrs now last 30min I bought new batteries and same problem. I’m sure I need a new mod but not sure what to get or how to prevent this from happening again. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like way too much power is being taken from the battery and converted into heat. Maybe there is some kind of partial short in the system.

It could be a problem in the mod or in the tank. Have you tried a different tank on that mod, or tried the tank on a different mod? That might tell you where the problem is. Since this started happening have you noticed a change in the vape you get?

I seem to recall hearing about a similar problem where the cause was the insulator around the positive post in the 510 had partially broken down.

Smok product goes haywire after 1 year. I’d say you did fairly well. Some people only get a month or two out of em.

As for what else to buy to replace it, a bit more information would be useful:

what do you like to vape at? Wattages, dL/mtl, etc?
Do you need a multibattery mod?
Do you like TC?
How physically large a mod do you want?
What is your budget?

Is the battery drained quickly only when you vape or also when you don't use the device?

Vape production is the same minus burning the coil faster.

What batteries are you using & where did you buy them?

I have had the imren gold and busbar for a year and never had an issue. I bought the mxjo last month still no issue. I just switched to the big baby beast tank and still having the same problem.

I usually vape around 30w. It is a 2 battery mod but I don’t need that if one battery can last at least a few hours. I have never tried tc. I don’t want anything larger than what I have. Nothing big and bulky. Budget is not an issue if it will last. I have the big baby beast, prince, crown og, and king cloud beast tanks. I vape a lot and do not want to build or drip.

How much juice do you go in an hour? A mod heating up is a variety of things a) chainvaping b) batteries past due time (300 cycles or 1 year) c) coils gunking up and needing more power for the same vape. Let the mod rest for at least 15 minutes. When it gets hot to the touch I set it down and let it rest. Do you have another mod to test the tank with?

A one battery mod should do 30w ok. Maybe a 2x700 mod just to make sure you got enough juice to go the distance.

Only when I vape.
ok, if you have some time, track down the error.

1. set your mod to the following watts:
-1
-5
-10
-25
and leave 30seconds between each setting (or 60 if the mod gets hot).

2. and for each of those, write down:
- what your mod says about the coil resistance, and if it matches what the coil should have
- the voltage, and if your mod supports it, the amperage when you press the fire button (press for 3 seconds).
- if the temperature of the mod/tank scales with the dialed in watts (ideally, it shouldn't produce any considerable heat at 1,5,10).

3. do the above with at least 2 different atomizers. doesn't matter that the coils aren't the same. this is to illuminate whether the mod has an internal problem with the power it puts out, or if the problem is located above the 510 thread. and please do check if the mod switches to 0.00ohm when you unscrew the atomizer.

oh btw:
A) you said you bought new batteries and still have the problem. just to rule out this potential source of the problem: are the batteries genuine/coming from a reputable seller? do they get hot when you use them in other devices, or when you charge them?

I go through about 8ml in an hour but do not vape every hour or for an hour. I usually have 10 min sessions. Every 2 hrs. I do not have a different mod but this is 2 tanks with same issue.

The Smok mod should display the pcb temperature. What does it get up to? Has the mod shut down due to temp too high?

Smok tanks in general get pretty hot especially with chain vaping. The mod itself less so.

If you're done with troubleshooting and just want a replacement, I'd go with an Innokin Proton. Great mod, simple menu, beautiful screen, and reliable. You can go with a kit ir mod alone if you want to use the tank's you have.

Oh that's a useful feature. That should be checked as well.

I'm sucking on my Big Baby Beast right now at 45W. I can take several hits in quick succession, and the tank/mod barely get lukewarm, So the BBB by itself doesn't seem to be constructed as a pathological frying pan; at least as long you don't try to MTL it.

Something is wrong,
The smok prince tank / TFV12 Q4 heads should hardly work at 25w, they are 40w - 100w.
A t8 .15Ω head burning at over 33w confirms this.
I'd say your procolor is malfunctioning & sending far more power to the head than the display shows or you're using counterfeit/knockoff replacement heads.

Also the batteries you use are the most important part, all of the cells you've been using are re wrap mostly lower quality cells.
Stick to name brand cells on Mooch's list of recommended cells or his longer list of tested cells. Buy only from known reputable dealers/vendors (he has a list of recommended dealers also) to avoid insufficient, counterfeit or re wrap lesser quality cells.
Batteries heating up is a warning sign, one not to be ignored.
