Modded my Mod

I waited for months for a Smartvapes altoid mod to be in stock, so when it was available I jumped. But there was a couple things I just didn't like about it. One, no on/off switch, and second, I had an lcd that showed the output V, and it was on every time you pushed the button. Seemed like a waste of the battery and a waste of a perfectly good LCD. So I added an on/off switch in the top corner between the battery + and the fire button, and wired in a switch on the bottom that allows me to shut off the lcd completely, also flip between the battery voltage and the output voltage. Now it is pretty much perfect IMHO.

I'm a little surprised those boxes don't come that way?, ok, I'll give them leaving out the meter switch (great job btw) but no master off/on?, that's a little scary.

I normally don't care if it has one or not, but I went to a movie with it and slid it in my pocket. I was worried the entire movie that it was going to fire by accident so I added it a few days after the other switch.

Tsbrewers, what switches did you use for the on/offs? Are they rated @ 3 amps or above? Great work by the way!!!

I just picked them up at radio shack, to be honest i am not sure what the rating is on them. I do think they were rated for 3+ amps at 125v ac, but don't quote me.

They don't have to be...a switches rating is based on how much current the switch can safely interrupt not how much can flow through it...

the master on/off switch tsbrewers installed is essentially an isolation switch and under normal conditions is only interrupting the voltage and very low stand-by current to the reg.

same thing for the switch he used for the meter function as it's also only switching milli-amps...it's all good

Cool I was there yesterday looking at a SPDT switch but the middle off portion didn't feel so great. I'm not to worried about it though because it won't be used much.

Well that's good to know as well. I only asked because I plan to incorporate the same volt meter setup in my next mod and it would be very convenient to pick something up locally.

Yup, my initial thought was to go with a true on-off-on switch, but i couldn't find one locally so I used these. But after I installed them, I noticed that there is a dead spot in the middle where it is completely off. So I have never gotten around to replacing it yet. I even left some extra wire on the bottom switch so i can replace it later, but so far haven't needed to.

If I place an order with digikey or something, I will probably order one then.

Lol I had the manager at my local RS use a meter to check and see if it had a center off. It doesn't but like you said it has a dead spot. That's good enough for me. And like you I may get around to replacing it if I make an order.
