Could be anything. Weak battery, flooding, cart not wicking. Gummed up resistor and so forth. I know this may be redundant but try a new cart.

For gumming up and flooding, put in a blank cart (no filling) and keep puffing until no smoke appears. This may fry the atomizer though :/ do at own risk.

Some people soak it in alcohol overnight then blow it out and let it dry.

Look in the tips and tricks section for more ideas.

no becky the best safe clean method is a warn not hot water bath soak for about 15 mins blow it out and let it dry overnight...if you want to try a more aggressive cleaning method a warm not hot alcohol solution with the same above steps works as well and yes rubbing works 91% is what your looking for warning it could and has with mine removed the paint off the atomizers.

do they soak it in regular rubbing alcohol?

I believe rubbing alcohol is 70% but the threads I've seen today recommending alcohol soaking recommended 91% alcohol. Try searching the site for "atomizer cleaning alcohol" and you'll find a few experiments with varied results.

Personally I'd say rubbing alcohol would probably work, the difference in percentage is made up with distilled water (I guess) so it probably couldn't hurt to go with 70% if that's all you can find. But I've never tried it, just trying to help answer your question the best I can.

Ok as a test, I have a 901 that seemed to be getting a little sluggish. Like the battery is about to die. I just rinsed it with hot water then soaked it a few minutes in rubbing alcohol. Took it into the garage and blew all the liquid out. Put it back together and smoking it right now. Seems to be producing a bit better like a fresh battery. Then again it may be subjective. In other words, it didn't harm it.
