Quick Story:

My mother came over today as she does once a week to help me with an online programming class that I suck at since she's a programmer herself. She hadn't been to my house in about 2 weeks and since then my vape supplies have more than doubled considering I got into DIY juice since then and picked up a few more PVs. Her immediate response after spotting my stash which is all over my desk was, "Is this vaping thing a hobby now? You don't need all this stuff!". I kinda freaked out pretty quick and told her I didn't have that much stuff, I was still saving money over smoking cigs, and oh yeah, I hopefully won't get cancer now! Man, I was super heated about it. I told her quitting smoking is really hard and vaping is a savior. She was on my ... for years to quit smoking and not once has she said congrats or that she's happy. My wife has also been less than supportive. I'm sure I'm not alone. Sorry, I just really needed to vent with a group who I know understands....

I had to work friday night and saturday we have to buy her a new car cause she totalled her's last week. Just a crappy weekend. One of my friends was there friday and kept tweeting how awesome it was. Crazy jealous...

Yeah, my mom is the same way -- not supportive of my method of quitting, though I have bombarded her with enough info that she no longer questions the safety of it. Getting "My Brother the Pharmacist" on my side helped quite a bit in that regard. Now she complains that the vapor "stinks," even when I haven't been using my PV. Telling her that her scented candles have always made me want to gag or telling her that it was all in her head (since I was vaping for months before I told her about it and she never smelled it prior) only aggravates her.

Lesson is, there are some people you'll never please. Either grin and bear it, or find a way to ignore and distract them.

Right on. I'm 27 and own a house. It's not like I have to see her all the time. Once this semester is over she won't be coming over once a week. She also never complains about my really expensive aquarium hobby. She actually asked me to bring her over a tank setup next week from my stack of extra tanks. Don't even ask how much money is in just my extra tank/equipment stack let alone the 6 running tanks I have in my house... lol

hahahaha
You have more courage than I do,
I hide my stash because I know I have more than I will ever need and YES it has become a hobby too,
Analogs were very bad for my health but they were easy,,,just light and smoke,,,,drop ashes all over,,,make everything smell,,,burn the occassional hole in the couch, car, carpet, shirt, jacket,,,,still easy,
You settle on a brand you 'like' really just pick one and get used to it and you are set,
It really wasn't that good so you didn't feel the need or desire to try every brand on the shelf,
Vaping is totally different,
They are all good and all different,
And so it becomes more than smoking,,,YES,,,and it becomes a hobby,
Hopefully you will settle on a couple (few?) flavors especially since you are starting DIY but even that makes it totally different than the 'habit' of smoking,
Listen to the two words,,,,'habit',,,'hobby'
Which do you pick?
I admit it is a hobby and feel I will get it under control,
In the meantime,,,,yes, I hide my stash when it reaches the embarrasing point,
I mean,,,,
there becomes a line between hobby and hoarding and we don't really want to go there,
hahahaha

Knock it off.... lol. Grab me some sweet swag and stop by my house on the way outta town. I live right off the turnpike. You'll go right past my place on your way back to Indiana. Think of me when you go up 476 and hit the turnpike to go west. I'm right at that interchange.

I have looked into aquariums and chose not to pursue that hobby for that reason

I'm in the same boat, I only see her a few times a week, and it's usually when I go hang out with her and mow her lawn for her. My whole family has been extra touchy about anything "like smoking" since my dad died of lung cancer.

As for expensive hobbies, no PV can hold a candle to a nice set of Mac or Snap-on tools...

So true. Aquariums and vaping combined aren't as expensive as when I was heavy into RC cars/trucks. Some of my trucks had almost $2,000 into each one. I made more than enough to buy a real car when I got out of that hobby...

Tell me about it. My dad was really into competitive racing when I was younger, and one of the things people seem to do when fighting cancer is get into a good distracting hobby. Dad got into RC again, and I humored him and spent a lot of time with him. Back then I was still driving a 1990 Buick LeSabre after graduating from college, and my HPI Pro4 that I raced on carpet with (all carbon fiber, Mazda6 body, several weel/tire sets, batteries, etc.) was worth far more than my real car. I still have that one, along with about a dozen other high-end kits.

I'm just glad he didn't get back into gas-powered RC planes, or I would still be paying all that stuff off! It was 100% worth it to make him happy and spend some time with him while he dealt with that illness.

so let me get this strait she totaled her car but you have to go work extra to replace her totaled car? Then she has the nerve to not let you leave the house and take a breather from working extra hours to get her a new car and spend a few bucks to get in? That is just wrong so wrong

i tell ya you are not alone man. im stuck in a house full of commited smokers who just will not quit. then my fiancee whos asthmatic (the main reason i switced besides it being healtier than unflitered roll your owns) constantly on my case bout this and that. ya know i finally got her to shut up for a second when i had to send my only mod back(her idea that i only needed one and should sell the others when i switch) and might have to smoke cigs. luckly my bro hooked me up with his old one. now i figured if i worked out a deal where she gets half the money i make from sales and stuff like that shed just leave it alone but you can never sastify some people ya know.
all i hear is quit vaping your giving me a headache or that vapor smells bad. idk just drives me berserk.

In my opinion when your partner, or your parent, or anyone else dictates what you can and can't do and it is not incurring a financial burden on them, there's something else going on with the relationship that deserves to be looked at. This is my second marriage (maybe I learned a few things from the first one) and before we got married we made some rules. We would each contribute 1/2 to all household expenses, agree on an amount to set aside to save and whatever we had left we could spend how we chose. It's worked for us for 16 years.. DH has had some outrageously expensive hobbies that I sometimes think are just silly but I don't say a word and he affords me the same respect.

a new car lol. the head gasket on my wife's 98 cavalier went. i would have repaired it myself but it wasnt worth it, car was too rotted underneath. so i went out and got her a super clean 87 bonneville for $2k with 90K miles on it. car also has a re-manufactured engine. it came from florida and she's super clean. my wife will never be driving a $10K+ car unless she buys it herself. i dont believe vehicles are worth that much money and besides i dont want to deal with the excessive electronics found in newer vehicles. i wont spend more than 5 grand on a car unless it was something really cool that will hold its value. cars like a 1987 buick grand national, a corvettte, a GMC cyclone, ect. those are vehicles that are worth that kind of money, they are also vehicles that will hold their value if you keep in out of the salt and maintain them properly.

my wife is also happy to drive the bonne as well. she's doesnt make a big deal about the age of the vehicle. besides its a nice, comfortable, clean, and a safe car. who gives a darn how old it is, i can fix it myself for peanuts. my wife is just happy to have a car and makes no demands on me as long as its not a rot-box
