"Is that your new crutch"

My father always say's, "it's NOT a smoking cessation product.", and I don't know what he means by this, or why he says it. He doesn't even know I vape. I haven't seen an ecig, mod or what have you quite as big as an actual crutch, but maybe soon enough they'll have attachable vape holders for your walker. Or maybe even eCigs built in with a long drip tip coming out of it... This is a LIFE CHANGING thing for most of us, it's why were here. People are finding careers here. People are inventing, and constantly innovating all because of a device that in it's basic form is really simple. Not a whole lot more innovative than a wire wrapped around a wick soaked in nicquid shorted out across a battery. But it's quickly becoming a major component in my life and it's a lifestyle. Crutch? I don't roll like that...

Omg, I so can relate to this. My mom quit smoking about 8 years ago, but she chain smoked during my entire childhood. My Dad, my brother and I all hated it, and really wanted her to quit.. but she wouldn't. She didn't even bother to take it outside.

So then when she did finally quit, she would gang up with my Grandmother on me about smoking. Check this out, I couldn't believe it... One Thanksgiving I hosted, and I was slaving away in the kitchen trying to make a nice meal for everyone. My Mother and my Grandmother are seated at the island, watching me slave away, and not offering to help... which is obnoxious enough in itself, but here's the kicker.... My Mom decide out of the clear blue sky, to bring up the new tax increases on cigarettes in my state.. bringing cigs to a hefty $7 a pack. Now, my Grandma grew up during the depression, so she's all about being conservative with money. My Mom KNEW damn well that would get my grandma going.

So yeah, I got to endure a nice lecture while selflessly working away to ensure everyone would have a nice holiday. I haven't seen my Mother in a while, but I told her on the phone that I use ecigs now, and she is just like "oh well all that nicotine cant be good for you either"

There is no reasoning with her. The thing with my Mom, is just that she is a miserable person, so no matter what I do she just needs to feel like she's doing better. I guess ill be a good daughter and just say 'yes mother dearest' lol

How ever you decide to deal with it just keep in mind that its your heath you are saving by not smoking, and enjoy your mother while she is still living who seems to care about you. Try to give her a break because she doesn't understand vaping, with everything being bad for us these days. I have lost my parents and an older sibling who cared a lot about me and nagged me about things, it really means love and I miss it. Giving up ciggs is the best for us all, congrats to you.

I mostly agree with what has been said.
some responses I give when people are nagging at me are
...do you plan to take care of me when I'm 150 yrs old?...... (I have no kids)
....people are so judgmental I need my crutch so I don't go off on them...
.... a blank stare.....
....I got off cigs to shut you up, but you are still talking....

and personally I don't think your mom quit cold turkey if she was and still is using welbutrin and paxil ............ just saying...........

I honestly wouldn't bother trying to help your mother understand or justify vaping. It isn't even really about your vaping, but instead it's about your mother. Which I get, because my mother has a way of reacting to most things with disapproval. Things she doesn't even NEED to have feelings about. She just seems unable to feel better until she has managed to make someone else feel bad. Sometimes, you just have to pretend to be oblivious to the negativity. It's how I condition my mother, at this point in my life. When she isn't successful at diminishing me or convincing me to see things her way, she changes her tune.

There comes a time when we as children have to realize that we cannot please our parents about certain things no matter how hard we try. And, there comes a time when we as parents must realize that our children are adults and we must respect their decisions and stop trying to manipulate them.

You're not doing anything illegal, vaping is the right decision for you and you're a separate individual from your mom. You're no longer a child nor a teenager. Set boundaries (this may be hard for your mother to accept, but set them in stone) and tell her that you will always love her because she is your mother and would like to be able to enjoy her company more often.

Bwahahahaha, that's funny that she's still on Wellbutrin and calls your ecig a crutch.

I posted about ecigs to FB. That got a couple cousins questioning me so I posted a picture of my ecigs.
A (very passive aggressive) friend replied about fancy pacifiers and he quit cold turkey and how it was hard for 2 weeks. I just told him how easy this was, including an accidental first night and that I found out I need nicotine for health reasons so it's either this or a lifetime of patches.

Gotta love quit snobs. I should point out that when I quit something else I went from seeing this friend every week to seeing him once in about 15 years. Snobby when you do, snobby when you don't. The only way to please them is to be them.

It is a healthy crutch and after smoking cigs for 38 years, I will take that crutch any day. Hell, food is a crutch as is water and air for that matter.

Careful with that water talk, there are some sensitive posters on this subject. Hell hath no fury like poster X in responding to water references!

My mother's the same way. I guess humiliating a 12 year old (whose never had a job or a bank account) for not knowing what the hell to do with a check made her feel good about herself.

Horrifying part? She's a teacher.

Hope none of you have school-age kids in Savannah, Georgia.

It would be great if all of our families and friends were supportive of our choice to vape instead of smoke BUT unfortunately that's not reality for many of us. :( What IS great is that we have ECF to come to where we have lots of support :)

You've made a great choice to give up smoking and start vaping. Be proud of your accomplishment!!! We are proud of YOU ! :toast:
