I like the Cantalope, the Honeydew not so much.
Both are over 2 months old and I haven't tried them in weeks.
I'm loading a pair of evods when this butterscotch is done.
Tonight the honeydew'll coat my sink drain if it ain't all it should be. :2c:

It's a program that you let your computer run in the background. While you do other things, it calculates various protein folding scenarios, looking for structures that scientists could use for new drugs to treat all kinds of things - cancer, AIDS, genetic diseases, etc. It's basically a way to turn millions of home computers into one giant research computer that's constantly searching for answers. Folding@home and other programs like it have already led to AIDS drug breakthroughs, cancer drug breakthroughs, and most recently, a new drug for Hep C.

It's really exciting stuff.

oh, kind of like SETI, eh? i've always been curious about that. thanks!

Yep, it's kind of the medical version of SETI. I'd join ECF's team, but I'm already on team BGG (Boardgamegeek) and we get virtual currency for folding there, which is the only way I currently have to fund my Eurogaming habit. (Over there, you can pay "geekgold" for used boardgames.)

I was on folding@home well before I found BGG of course... this kind of stuff is right in my wheelhouse.

Also out of Berkeley, there's FoldIt but that's not automatic... in that one, they've figured out how to represent the proteins visually, and *you* fold them. The computer keeps track of what's physically possible and what's not, so it won't let you do anything that defies the laws of physics (or covalent bonds)... it's kind of like playing Tetris. I don't get on that one nearly as often as I'd like - just don't have the time these days - but they too have had some amazing breakthroughs.

I used a bunch of networked 386s & 486s in my kitchen to help map the human genome in the 90s.
I don't even remember what that project was called. You probably know?

I was just trying to remember, actually! Just my luck, it's not coming to me tonight. The Genome Project was all I thought about for years, and I loved that I could do at least a little something about it. I'm waiting for the equivalent to be announced in connection to the new Neuroscience initiative.... my current processor can only handle one program like that at a time, at least if I want to actually be able to *use* the computer, but I'd like to see what the equivalent program would look like now that technology is considerably more advanced.

And the fact that I can talk about this stuff for hours is why my mom is convinced I should go into research... but as much as I love research, it's getting to *see* the end result of said research that's the best part. Plus, as good as I am at the science angle, I've got a pretty severe case of dyscalculia, so the math required to get *to* a career as a fulltime researcher would probably kill me. I'll stick to the renegade research groups and letting my computer do the heavy lifting. :D

Mine creaks & groans all day.:?:

I know the feeling. :(

Careful with that Oxy. My brother-in-law's in the cemetary because of that .... :(

I'm sorry for your loss. It is definitely a scary experience.

oh, kind of like SETI, eh? i've always been curious about that. thanks!

Yep. I ran SETI for a long time in the 90's and then Folding@home for about a year back in 2008-2009. I think I was on Leo LaPorte's team for folding@home.

Do any of the geeks here watch Leo's TWIT webcasts? When I was laid up with my back I'd watch pretty much every day. Kept my mind off the pain. The IRC channel provided some entertainment too.

Sent from my Astromech in a galaxy far, far away. The force is with me. so is Mr. chicken.

Caught up again, took a bit longer tonight, had to watch SOA finally finale...haha. Or maybe that's the other way around. I have some butterscotch and am wondering what kind of steep time I'm looking at for it? It has been a month already but I think it may need some more. Anyway off to the ol fartsack as my dear old dad used to call it. Tomorrow y'all.

Morning, everyone. Hope you're feeling better soon, Mia.

I broke down and upped my pred today, then spent two hours wondering why I felt like I was starving to death before I remembered I'd upped my pred. In the interim, tried to hold off the ravenousness with vaping, only to discover that *all* of my tanks had decided to be very temperamental at the same time... tight draw, reduced vapor, etc.

Ripped them all apart for cleaning and dryburning (which they shouldn't have needed, since I'd just done that a few hours before), put them all back together... didn't help.

Pulled them all apart and put new coils in.... MVP read they were all shorted out, which I knew couldn't be right.

Broke everything down again, made sure the coils were screwed in properly (yup) and that I hadn't done anything dumb (not this time), put it all back together... nothing.

Went outside and reminded myself why smoking is a bad plan. Came back in, pulled everything apart on all four tanks a fourth time, put it all back together... worked like a charm.

Shaping up to be one of *those* days. Still haven't figured out what the problem was, but as long as they're working now, I don't care all that much, either. :vapor:

morning Mike & company,

hope you feel better, Mia.

re: folding@home. i probably don't have processor strength for that, what with the fbi and fatherland security constantly scrutinizing my laptop! ;)

haha, very true that. I no longer keep a desktop computer so I don't have it to spare either.

Good morning everyone, and hope you feel better soon Mia.

This may sound course, but...

For those evolutionists out there we are now circumventing Darwin's theories here in the US. We should not be saving people with tags on hair dryers. If someone thinks using a hair dryer in a bathtub is a good thing.....

I say more POWER to them :)

how much did you pay for the torch?

i was considering this one:

Rebuildable Drippable Atomizers

now you have me thinking about the butane, as well...

For you guys looking for torches there are some really cheap ones at Harbor Freight. I tend to despise that place being a life long SnapOn Tools user but I have both of the torches linked below and they have lasted as long as my expensive tool truck torches. You will need to pick up a can of butane, available at Walmart and some grocery stores for lighter refills.
