On the physical hard drive, sure. But not on the C:\ partition. If the physical hard drive is not partitioned, you should create a partition and install it to that partition. Windows will assign a drive letter to the new partition.

You can create a partition in Disk Management. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management. From here you can create another partition on your hard drive. Ubuntu shouldn't need more than 20-50 gigs of space depending on what you want to do with it. Once the partition is created it will show up as D: or E: or F:, etc. That's where you will want to install Ubuntu.

Okay thanks! What I'm trying to do is install this on the XP machine since XP will stop being supported
by Microsoft in April. New Win7 machine will replace this one next week and this one will be the spare.
I restored it to factory settings a few days ago (have since updated stuff) so nothing is partitioned.

You can install Ubuntu on your Mac! You know you want to, it is quiet hipster and all the cool kids are doing so.

I did it just to see if my wifes machine can handle it, she hates it but now I have an Ubuntu install on all the machines in the house.

Ima nerd.

Ubuntu (/ʊˈbʊntuː/ uu-BUUN-too)[7][8] is a Debian-based Linux operating system, with Unity as its default desktop environment. It is based on free software and named after the Southern African philosophy of ubuntu (literally, "human-ness"), which often is translated as "humanity towards others" or "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".[9]

According to some metrics, Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution

Believe it or not, MCOL was correct :)

Well I've heard great things about Linux but that's as far as my knowledge goes. I hate to mess with this OS because it's pretty new and synched with my ipad. Think I'll not rock the boat here......sounds interesting though.
