There was something about "Kind Woman" played on my first boyfriend's reel-to-reel that was really special! Wasn't it Richie Furay who did that one?

Emmy Lou- is that her today? Wow, she's stunning!

Emmy Lou today? No. Time just won't stop but don't worry, I'm workin' on it.
That was indeed Richie Furay and I'm going to guess Rusty Young on peddle steel. I don't really know. The song was recorded and released as Buffalo Springfield but to my mind it's Poco.

Years ago back in the early 70s, I was in a country rock band called Stoney Creek. Mike Hopkins, the lead player, had a Telecaster fitted with "Palm Peddles" or something. Dave knows what I mean. Coupled with a glass slide and a volume peddle, he just about nailed the sound of a peddle steel. Years later, maybe 3 years ago we did a reunion show (with other groups) and dang if Mike didn't get himself a real peddle steel and got pretty good on it.
(I like the song but...want a dirge! Pass me the caffeine please.)

... that proved to me music was a universal bond between people.

I know that someday soon my steady gig will come to an end, then my wife and I would like to move away from L.A. to somewhere more rural where we can have a dog or two that can roam free.
I also know there will always be a blues jam or a front porch strum that will welcome me and my upright or whatever bass is appropriate. Maybe I'll actually learn to sing properly enough for relaxed company.
Music has always been about sharing to me. It's a gift that you can share and always gives back. It's instant friends.
Look at us here!

Hey guys, been a while since I posted... I started back reading from page 104... so allman bros love em, doing a song, pink floyd rules, learning some gypsy jazz, not much liking hard jazz ummm lots more I saw... cliff notes post

pickups, yes... I did go pay off my long and mcquade account today and bought a snark tuner for my mandolins, and going to try the elixer nanowebs on my electric. I use coated sets on my acoustic and they just so outlive my non coated strings by a huge margin and play great, the electric is getting spoiled now too...

This is my next order to replace the squire Roland U.S. - GC-1: GK-Ready Stratocaster® . It's a much cleaner setup too that what I have (my gk-3 pickup). I might mount that one on my acoustic... a pad string behind a finger picked acoustic part is nice.

if I ever get some video of rick's camcorder I'll post it. we have been filming rehearsals then going inside to listen and see...we have also invited many different people by to give honest opinions and cleaned some things up. I might have us booked in weekends as house band for a biker bar (bass player just bought a harley so we all ride anyway)

RAWHIDE.... I look forward to it. We have a couple weekends off as Rob is at the Calgary Stampede with his family, Rick is camping with his new trailer the following weekend. I started a new job and have been detailing and painting on my days off.. sundays are my music days. finally insuring the motorcycle tomorrow.

just played with that snark tuner and did both acoustic and electric mandolins... it's really accurate. I got the sn-2 for any instrument. fiddle gonna try on too. it's mostly for the mandolins. acoustic guitar has a built in tuner

it was fun reading through all those pages and catching up

I wanted to share a couple pics.. I spent 2 days on this car, well 3 if you count the first day running the ozone machine full for 6 hrs to kill the mold and smell before I'd work on it.

1970 stang. had been stored for a long time but leaked a bit and had mold and fungus growing inside. I had to do a major clean and condition of everything and I dyed everything below the woodgrain incl steering column and console. sorry no after pics. it was dark when I finished. it was all nice and black. oh I also painted the engine and compartment using my airbrush and rattle cans... got a decent tip ;)

Sure does sound like Poco -- now you got me wondering if New Riders of the Purple Sage had any of those guys.

Sounds great! Love the sound.

I saw the Western Elstons at a free concert in the park a few weeks ago -- just fell in love with that mournful pedal steel sound. I have never played a pedal steel. I think it's going to be my next instrument!

No! Absolutely not,
Good call and question though. That was Jerry Garcia on peddle steel - first record. Skip Spence from Jefferson Airplane on drums? Anybody?

Edit:
Yeah. That's Skip.

I liked "You Better Think Twice" - I think Timothy B. Schmidt was the bass player :)

You know it's funny..as good as I sometimes think I am, learning chops on top of chops, I just can't seem to get there...and they were just kids. Maybe it's because they got there first. (and James Jamerson before him) You can never compete with that.
...but I always enjoy listening.

Edit.
Let it be said that I have listened to and studied that recording off and on for years and I do incorporate what I've learned from it. It's almost a foundation for me. That and a very few other recordings by different people. I'm pretty simple.

Timothy B. Schmidt plays bass with the Eagles sometimes....and he can sing:

Bee Basses 'Worker Bee' fretted 7
Benavente Guitars '51P' fretted 5 and fretless 6
pair of 1983 Ibanez... RB924 and RS315 (also have a Destroyer bass of similar vintage I'm modding)
and an Engater Tweaker-40 sitting on a Bag End D12-B

I've got a Squier Strat from the early 90s and an import Hamer 5 string that I defretted as well.

Is it a Tele B-Bender you were talking about? I've never tried one, but the country players can make you believe they are playing a steel by using one of those and a volume pedal. It's amazing.

Here's a video from the guy who designed the B-Bender.
