I have an sg too, but it's the cherry red & black plated one :) excellent guitars an by far my favourite, I will check the videos out when I have some time.
Cool, yes the SG is the only electric guitar I need. I might buy a yamaha western guitar soon though, because I need it for some singer-songwriter stuff

I ride a Yamaha Vstar Classic. It's an 1100cc v twin.

Nice!

James, I drool everytime I see the stand up. I truly want one some day.

The guitarist/singer in the 2 tracks I posted actually had a Jazz Studies with bass specialization degree from Kent State. I use to fool around on his 1940's Kay and wanted one of my own FOREVER. My wife bought me mine from a friend who had carpel tunnel and had to give up basses. It is an Engelhardt (current maker of the Kay molds)... they run about $1200 or so new and made in the USA. Decent student plywood basses. Mine cost me $1400 used, but it had about $1000 of Luthier work done to it and came with a decent snakewood German bow, stand, and soft case.

One day before I die, I will own a carved bass... a crappy one in the grand scheme of things... but a carved one

I've used a 4 track too, I now use a digital 12 track to record. Pretty nifty little device :)

I have a little Zoom H2 I use for jams and such... everything else has been PC based for the last 15ish years. I need to upgrade my PCI interface to a USB one ASAP. I haven't recorded in forever while waiting to budget in one.

That is awesome! Thanks for sharing... love the music, the lyrics, and the animations!

I finally got to come back and listen to James' music... I was expecting the cult of personality to break out in the jam. funky stuff.

Thanks... that was circa 1990... I was listening to too much RHCP, Primus and the whole west coast funk rock scene. The guitarist / singer wanted to BE Adrian Belew... and the drummer's dream was to sit in with Aerosmith.

After we split, I hooked up with really cool alternate / new wave / retro hippy type female singer. I brought the Sprout drummer in and a Robin Trower meets the Monkeys via Santana guitarist... Age of Fable - The Storm & Age of Fable - Pride
I was the main writer / arranger of the material, the singer wrote all her own words and melodies on top of my lines/progressions. These are my Carvin 5 string strung EADGB thru a couple of single speaker Bag End cabs (I've been an endorsing artist for BE for years). It was an arrangement rehearsal (hence the rough backing vocals)... couple of SM57 mics hung in the room and recorded direct from an 8 track mixer to stereo cassette (just a rehearsal). Singer and the guitarist hated each other... and the drummer was always at the bar :nah:

I dig the second set but musical preference was the first 2 tracks. I was in a band that did crimson and beliew (we played addidas in heat hehe). I had honestly never even heard that stuff before. I was working with a couple drummers, they were friends. Alan brought over the Lone Rhinoceros album.

I met with Tomy Hovington this morning, the fellow building my new OM. He was here for about 2 hrs and let me play a mandolin he built. I am quite proud of myself.... I told him to let me pay the other one off first. He also made me a deal for that one since he is going to be making another instrument after this one. Plan is to be playing all his instruments eventually. I was playing the Wildfire. He explained the process of burning inside the scroll and around the edges. He pointed out a flaw, but I just saw design... F Models ... next is going to be an electric semi acoustic octave mandolin. the archtop will be for home and recording. too expensive to risk outdoors.

As I was typing my phone rang. it was the lady that hired me for the gig last night. She had gotten a few calls from people that were there wanting to hire me and they want me back in summer for another dinner party. funny. I didn't take any pics until after all was done. My dinner is on the end of the table. I was eating and packing up. gig inside a newly built greenhouse! my stage was plywood sheets haha. The table settings were already taken down. it looked amazing. all the flowers were from the farm, in mason jars on top of wood cut from the trees removed to plant stuff

I'll bet the acoustics were pretty flat (in a good way) in there with the plastic sheeting exterior, Pipeous.

Agreed... the long & narrow shape troubles should have been offset by the wall construction.

Thanks! Groovy music Age of Fable

Thanks!

Thanks, I have always dug Fripp and Belew. I'm actually online friends with one of Adrian's first bassists AND his current one. John Wetton (Crimson, UK, Asia bassist/singer) has long been one of the bassists I pull from when putting lines together. Tony Levin (Belew era Crimson, Peter Gabriel, many more) is another one :)

I've played in many styles of original bands... here is one of the heavier (in a Journey meets Europe meets Chick Corea Elektric Band). Bebop Gypsy - Shade of the Sun & Bebop Gypsy - Better Way
Carvin + Bag End set up mixed with direct... it was the guitarist's ADAT studio around 1993. The drummer was a long time student of Joe Morello (think Take Five.... he was Dave Brubeck's drummer) and graduate of Musician's Institute in California. The guitarist is a long time teacher with books and instruction videos out. Last I spoke with him about 3 years back he was still playing John Lennon in Beatlemania and gigging his Jazz Fusion stuff. I just googled him and found his wiki page Lucien Nocelli - Wikipedia

Awesome stuff! I had the same builder build me 2 basses, then another built my 7. I have some nice Bubinga top and fingerboard wood at his shop that will someday build my daughter a short scale 6 string bass / baritone guitar. It will be hers to learn on and use as she wishes, but I will keep it in the music room and use it too. I wish I was local to either builder... I would be infinitely broke if I had chance to visit with them regularly :)

I love the build video! It was like pulling teeth to get build shots of any of my basses.

As I was typing my phone rang. it was the lady that hired me for the gig last night. She had gotten a few calls from people that were there wanting to hire me and they want me back in summer for another dinner party.

That is the coolest thing to hear!!! Keep the momentum moving, be cautious of taking too much at once and make sure you price yourself out high enough to make it worth your time... and enjoy it :D

SG's have a neck design I really like. It's a little more roomy than a Strat and maybe even wider than a Les Paul.

I restrung the Goldtop last night and will be playing it this weekend. Single coils definitely have a different sound. I come from a Strat/SG/LP background and they all have different nuances in tone. I need to rotate guitars just to keep up with the differences in necks and tone settings. Every guitar has a little different feel.

That's cool, I liked the look of that Goldtop, they have been my main guitars since I started playing. Aside from a a Yamaha acoustic, had awesome action & also had a Tanglewood acoustic that was decent too but I'm the same been mainly les pauls, sgs and strats & my new addition the Fender mustang but yeah they do all have different feel for sure :)

I like the flatter back of the necks. I discussed this with Tomy on Friday and showed him a few instruments here to explain. The Epiphone, Strat and Taylor are all like that... so my new instrument won't have a truss rod put in. The grain on quilted maple runs horizontal unlike other woods. this is a strength issue. the channel for the truss rod would weaken this. So we have agreed dual carbon rods inserted will be the ticket. And it will have a new Tusk nut installed. I tried the mandolin he installed a tusk nut on and even tried a tusk pick. pretty cool. you bounce it on the cement and it pings. the sound transfr from this material should be really good

oops sorry that is Tusq. it's made by Graph Tech. Graph Tech Guitar Labs | Guitar Parts & Guitar Accessories

I played Sunday at the closing day of the Port Moody Winter Market. Awesome day. The sun was shining for a change. I had quite a crowd all day sitting around the area to listen. Funny an older lady was there in a powered cart thingy. i mentioned I ride a motorcycle. She came up to me to chat and told me she was riding until an accident recently, which is why she was in that cart (I say older lady but she wasn't much older than myself lol). She still has her riding leathers and helmet. So I said well, I lost my riding partner this year, how would you like to come for a cruise with me. I have a full dresser with arm rests and such. her face lit right up. she was a sweet lady and fun to chat with. So a little karma in life will be good and I won't have to take all my rides alone.

I have only ever played an sg copy, an epiphone. that said I love this epiphone 339. it is a neck through body and that push pull pot on the pickup sure gives a lot of sounds. my old squire had a dual hunbucker in the bridge but I think the 339 has more bite, yet as s single coil it has a nice jazzy sound. I think you need multiple instruments just because they all have their unique sounds. my dobro mandolin sounds nothing like the godin.

ok I am rambling now. I am drinking this black beer 8.5% alcohol. my days off and i don't have a gig until May 9. Today was a relax day. my fingers were sore, dam arthritis. Tomorrow i am laying some tracks to get back all i wiped out. Like the famous line from a song.. "just like starting over"

my first electric guitar has a harmony les paul copy. it had from the makers of gibson on it. I think it was because I loved my fender bass, a 71 jazz, so much that my love of the fender style came to be. funny I had a tele but didn't like the tiny neck and traded it for a 12 string

I played the GoldTop Sunday. Funny thing was that later I realized there was no hum. Before I've noticed single coil hum in the amp and had to stay away from it to be silent.

I still like the fat sound of humbuckers better than the P90's in the Goldtop. I might try changing them over to Seymour Duncan mini humbuckers that fit into the same slots.

Single coils are great if you like crystal clear clean sound. They don't break up the same way as humbuckers, though.

Great to hear your experiences, sounds like you had a really good time & it's always great to hear different peoples guitar styles.
I will try and dig out some of my recordings soon & post them in this thread, everybody on this thread seems great.
Always like to hear from different musicians.

Everyone deserves a break, I love a good beer :p
I saw some mad dudes online drinking 41 percent bottled beer, was insane!

How did you like your 12 string? I've never owned any but have had the good fortune of playing a couple of my mates, not heard from him in a while.

I like the flatter back of the necks.

Me too... but more so, I prefer a large radius on the fingerboard. Which equates it to a wide flat neck top and back. My 7 has 2 truss rods and 3 carbon fiber rods in it... plus all the neck & fingerboard was Acrylized (put in a vacuum oven and impregnated with acrylic resin)

I have brass nuts in my 2 Benavente 51p style basses... but Bee uses a cool set up the removes the need for a nut and makes open strings and fretted stings sound identical. It has a Zero Fret and the fingerboard is extended with notches to guide the strings to where they need to be.

For me they have a rawness and edge that you just cannot get from a humbucker, but I understand having the preference on the other side. I've played with a few guys that feel the same way you do, and they all had great tones.
