Satriani is much more talented than I in the speed department, but I love doing fills. I'm creative and I use all four fingers on the fretboard for free style solos. I was usually able to recreate 90% of the licks on pop songs when I was in a top 40 cover band. There's always a lick here and there that you have to transpose to something you can actually pull off. EVH at his best always pushed the envelope for me. ;)

I like Orianthi's style (Michael Jackson's lead guitar player). She's pretty exceptional.

I was always more comfortable in the Southern Rock genre. Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Warren Haynes and Govt Mule, etc. are my favorite people. 4/4 rock rocks with creative styling and soulful execution always attract my attention. Skynyrd guitarists were always my favorites to watch on stage.

Tapping is an art I never really mastered. You have to have the strings so low that you can almost blow on them and get a note. That doesn't match up well with normal playing. To do a good bend you need strings high enough for your bend finger to push the rest out of the way, not slip over the next one as you bend.

I'm looking forward to being a part of this online creation. For a group name, I vote for "Vapor Lock".

Heck, It's already taken ... http://www.bandmix.com/vaporlock/

Here's a Christian rock song done by Lincoln Brewster that our group is covering frequently now. I have all the parts down for the guitar solo, but getting them all done in real time sequence is giving me fits. I need to practice it in real time (120 bpm) and get fluid. The little EVH style lick toward the end of the solo (2:19) is pushing me to the limits. It's short, but packed with fingerboard gymnastics that are a little foreign to my style.

Got the request to join the project on Skydrive, but there's nothing there. (This item may not exist, etc.) Bad link or not ready yet?

Once you create a free account, the link takes you into Pipeous's area and you can see the files. Click on karafunplayer and go through the setup to install the software.

When the player runs there's a login icon. I guess Pipeous will tell us how to get to his online stuff.

I have a skydrive (hotmail) account already, and when I hit the "view group" link Pipe sent, this is what I get.

"This item might not exist or is no longer available

This item might have been deleted, expired, or you might not have permission to view it. Contact the owner of this item for more information."

Go to my SkyDrive

send me a link to your skydrive? I can upload files there.

at worst I can setup apache webserver and run direct from here. I imagine we will lose our skydrives eventually since skype and messenger are one now. the google one seems more intrusive... you can view and download without being a member, just not upload.

https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=4c87bb489fd53c6e#cid=0009D90E283058B4&group=1 is direct, maybe send me a request?

I'm not a pro musician but I'm an Ibanez RG nut and jemsiter. Been playing on off for about 21 years. Have a few years of drums under my belt, and ok with a keyboard. In the 90s I was an electro producer and a DJ until it got old. Guitar is what I'm best at and enjoy playing traditional blues, classic rock and metal.

This may sound weird. I actually have no firm belief that can actually play music until shortly before a song starts.
I have some notion of "jobness" and responsibility and even confidence, otherwise I wouldn't show up to the gig.
I only carry a vague notion... it's in my dna but not my everyday consciousness. I call myself a musician but it isn't until the song starts that I actually become one. Something comes alive in me and goes into action and then I enjoy it.
Does that make sense? I said it was weird....Maybe I don't practice enough.
I've been doing this a long time.

The mark of a true musician is having broad chops deep enough to be able to recognize and devise something to fit into whatever riff is presented. Being able to jump in and add something that gives support to what's being played is true talent.

Some of the best musicians I've known have spent years in cover bands. That makes you learn all the styles just to survive.

Hello fellow musicians! How have I not noticed this thread? I love music, playing, recording... listening! I play bass in a rock band, but also been playing guitar for quite a while now... my band tragically lost our drummer in a car accident last year and his close friend has stepped in and started learning the drums to play with us (he played a little previously)... it's been a step back but we have fun... heres a vid from our former drummers memorial show...
