Yeah, the marinara feels great between your toes.

It's an envelope filter pedal... great for getting that Bootsy Collins funky synthy "mwah" sound out of a bass. I'm not much of a pedal guy, but have been considering one of these.

Bassnut is our resident bass guy, although there are quite a few bass players here. How about it Bassnut? You ever used one?

I don't use pedals of any kind. I used to use an MXR flanger a long time ago but only on a very few songs.
I use the sub-octave feature on the Ashdown amp (when I'm not using the '68 Dual Showman) for a couple of tunes.
I play mostly classic rock, country, swing and blues these days. Old stuff.
If I want distortion in the studio, I use one of these cranked up about 3/4. Mine's from the late 60's and a little more beat up looking:

It sounds exactly like this (almost ;- ) because that's what's being used to amplify the bass here. The only "instruments" being used on the first song are acoustic guitar, bass (milti-tracked Jack Casady) and vocal (Grace Slick):

...later you can hear Grace Slick on piano and some spacey peddle steel stuff by Jerry Garcia.

Bassnut, are you in on Pipeous's track submission thing? He said he was going to be working some crazy hours this week and next week, but would get back to us when he had the first tracks laid down for our addition.

Can't wait! I'd like to see you into this composition. I've never done anything online where people add tracks and build the mix. It should be lots of fun. You need to be in on the bass tracks!

And now our 3rd bassist has quit. We are now a 3 piece and the vocalist doesn't play an instrument.

Some of the most talented vocalists I've ever heard had a bass strapped around their neck. Paul McCartney was amazing with his Hofner. Maybe you should take up the bass, Mac. You could solve that problem pretty quickly.

Of course, it takes time to learn to think about the music and remember the words at the same time. That doesn't happen until you can manage to sing without thinking about what your fingers are doing. ;)

I"m all thumbs :(

I thought that when I first tried to play guitar. I spent lots of time using my right hand to move my fingers to the right positions for chords. I thought I'd never get it. That was at age 12. At age 13 I had a year of lessons under my belt and was jamming with neighborhood friends. At 15, I was getting paid to play around town in a band at local youth centers. By the time I was out of high school, I was making as much on Friday and Saturday nights as I did on my day job.

But then, a singer can walk into a gig without hauling a bunch of hardware, ;)

Here and back
Why is that? Is the vocalist missing some fingers or something?
Today is as good a time as any to start....

My dad was a piano player, before and after losing 4 fingers on the left hand. Still played (and very well). Just a stub of the pinky and the thumb. After the last accident (clumsy perhaps?) he took up guitar too.

Did you read this Mac?
I get that you just don't want to lower yourself to become a mere musical instrument player...

Once on a gig I sat in on drums while the drummer danced with his wife. When he came back up he remarked, "You need to get back on the guitar ... that was about the worst drumming I ever heard in my life!".

He was right. My 6 months of drum lessons when I was 9 didn't produce much in the way of results.

That's ok man, drums take a lot of practice!
