I have an advantage on the DIY... Already have the lab ware for testing I do on other hobby stuff. I used to manage a lab, as well, years ago. Scales, glassware, etc. Just need the PG, VG, Nic juice, flavoring, more nic juice, nore nic juice, several more flavorings, more PG, more Vg.... By then I will need some bottles, caps, more pipettes, a better .........

I figure if a fat guy can sue McDonalds because he buys Big Macs buy the bagful, I should be able to seek compensation from ECF for introducing me to Vaping as a "hobby". Yeah, right. Maybe for some people.
Without getting into my own issues (of which are are legion), There is an excellent thread around here presenting various theories as to why "Vapers are never satisfied". It provides a little insight to this thread.
Bottom line is; everyone does what they do for their own reasons. And some of us get "a little carried away" when we find a new interest/hobby.

I have little in the way of self-restraint. Hindsight proves that. Guns, guitars, cars are just proof. I can't have just one of anything. I had to have guitars turned standard, E Flat, Drop D, etc and have multiples of each just in case a string broke. Pretty soon I found an entire room filled with guitars. Oh, and they all have different 'personalities', each with a little different voice. Humbuckers for crunch, single coils for cleans and blues. Might as well throw amps in there too. They all sound different. Had to have all of them, or at lease as many as I could collect. Marshall, Rivera, Soldano, Rocktron, Mesa, ADA, Eleven Rack, Line 6. Guns are the same way. A shotgun has a completely different purpose than a pistol. Answer: get both. 9mm vs .45? Get both.

While I am happy to be off cigarettes (so vaping has been a blessing in that regards), I am not sure I have realized a penny in financial savings yet due to my spoiled, inquisitive, hoarding nature. In reality, I would probably have to concede that to date, I probably have spent more on vaping that I would have smoking so far. Thank God that isn't the biggest criteria I go by these days.
My starter kit was nice. But then came the juice sampling, which not only continues, but has only grown worse as I discover more and more places, supposedly better than the last. Some from here, some from there. Then, I need tanks. Oh, now I vape like a fiend since I can do it practically anytime, anywhere. So, I needed more batteries. Now I have a stockpile of batteries, juices, tanks, etc that I have to organize. I have my desk, the car, how do I carry a day's worth of stuff when outside the house, etc etc etc

except, as the camera pans out, I'm not trapped inside an amber prescription bottle like the guy in the commercial but rather inside a clearomizer.................

Thompsondd, except for the part about the guns, you've described me to a T. I'm a guitarist also and I know the "must have a backup" syndrome all too well. I also have way too many amps but that happened more by accident than design. I used to fix them for a living.

Fortunately, I have finally found some gear that I am happy with.
The eGo-C twists got me off of the cigarettes but was short lived as a long term solution.

Just like with ANYTHING in life.....the best thing you can do is sit down with yourself, perhaps a notepad and pen.....and think/write down what YOU want out of vaping.
If vaping is a hobby to you, then your vape budget will be entirely different from a person who is vaping solely to quit cigarettes, nothing more.
Also, it is very beneficial to set a monthly vape budget, and stick to it. I have yet to go over my budget. Usually I don't even come close to spending as much as I set aside for the monthly vape budget.
Also, you need to know WHAT you are purchasing, and WHY you are purchasing it. It is extremely easy, and I see it happening to LOTS of people, especially on this forum.....where they end up buying a new PV, or a bunch of clearos, or carto tanks, or whatever..... and they don't even know WHY they are buying them. They see them....they see others praise them....and they buy them on impulse..... only to come on these forums and complain because these devices aren't this special thing they were hoping they'd be.
Personally, I have ALL my vaping stuff in a nice a plastic case with separators , and I keep inventory so to speak of everything I have. Each month, I decide and plan what juices I'm going to buy, and if I'm going to need anything else for the month, such as coils, wicks, etc.
After I purchase my juices and whatever else I need for the month, I see how much I have left on my vape budget. Then, throughout the month, I think about if I need anything else, or want to try something else. Am I low on delivery devices? Do I need new batteries? Is there a great sale going on for something I could use? Or do I want to try a new e-liquid vendor?

I have found 2 adv juices... Jamaican rum and a homemade liqourice all 100% vg... But erhm... Erhm... Im kinda hooked on buying gear... Started using a 750mah ego with a ce4... Then i got a LR ce4... Then i got a vivi nova... Then a vv ego... And then the s*** hit the fan when i got a vamo... Suddenly i was addicted...

I go through phases... right now I'm in the phase of buying, partially due to being slow at work and spending a lot of time here. I have the funds for my expensive hobby (not going into debt) but I have spent a ridiculous amount in the past month alone. I think the less time I spend on ECF, the less money I spend. Part of my addiction isn't even cloud chasing, rather collecting. It seems like some of the higher end mods are hard to get, and when they stop making them, they are impossible to get (Caravela, GP, GG) so when I see one up for sale I pounce. Maybe one day my collection will be worth more than what I spent on it (wishful thinking). Its hard because I want to stay up to date on all things vape, but I cant try every new tank, mod, juice just because its the new fad. I am exercising my self control on a daily, if not hourly, basis.
I'd say my first 10-12 months of vaping I was totally a juice junkie. I wanted to try every juice out there and the truth is I didn't really like any of them. Finding a couple flavors I really enjoyed was the hardest part of vaping to me. I also spent the first year investing on a decent mod (Provari) and a box mod for backup, backup batts and chargers. After that I finally found my one and true all day vape that I'm still vaping on more than a year later all day, and that helped me cut costs way back. I also got tired of trying every tank and clearo out there and have leveled off to vivi novas and a couple Igo-l's mostly that I use. And I also have learned to make my all day vape juice and rebuild my coils so I'd say I finally don't spend much at all on supplies except an occassional order of flavorings or maybe a $35 order of 500 ml of nic juice that will last me a good year because I am down to 8 mg. nic nowadays. Now I hardly spend anything on vaping. The newness and experimentation mode eventually fizzles out. But I tell ya, at first for a long while I was so addicted to going to vendors websites and filling a cart, and then exiting out because I knew I shouldn't order so much. lol. I felt like if I didn't have at least one vape mail order a week coming in, I was really missing out on something. ha! Although I have to admit that nowadays I am addicted more into trying new DIY recipes with flavors I have and sometimes I go a bit crazy and buy a bunch of flavors I haven't tried yet but at least they are cheaper than buying premade juices.

I am certainly interested in DIY, and have been lurking around in that part of the forum. I made my first lab order earlier this week, and I can only hope that my house doesn't wind up looking like a set from Breaking Bad.
lol, RBBR. Mine already does. Well, I did have to invest in a cabinet with a few shelves because all the stuff plus mods, batts, clearos, cartos, atomizers, low ohm stuff, high voltage stuff, drip tips, syringes, flasks, wires, wicking materials, etc., just got to be too hard to keep up with. A cabinet saved me from future anxiety. But as soon as I open the doors to that cabinet the aroma is amazing! I love all the little flavorings I have accumulated over time. I have a section of sweets, fruits, flavors for enhancing, etc. lol. I'm OCD when it comes to my cabinet and I can't help it. It's like my child. hehe...
Oh, and I did have to explain to my cleaning lady (who speaks mainly Spanish) and my exterminator (who also speaks mostly Spanish) what it all was so they wouldn't think I was doing drugs. I hope they understood my English or they are probably really wondering about me. ha!

I just got into vaping a few weeks ago, and I have to admit that I went a little nuts, because I'm part geek and love shiny things that I can tinker and experiment with. I *think* I'm set on hardware at this point, and I have quite a bit of juice on hand with more vapemail arriving next week, so other than more purchases of juice in the future, I should be back in the black in a few months.
Like ive mentioned before, make yourself a "Painsheet" as i call it.
Work up a spread sheet and track every penny you spend on vaping, then whip up all the formulas and make a readout box:

I know when my boys tried to get me into vaping my oldest told me there were two ways to look at this, one to quit smoking (as my partner does) and one as a hobby. Well, my first thoughts once I got a set up that was working for me was to just quit but it is very quickly turning into a hobby. I am still new to this (only two weeks) but I can see it is fast becoming a hobby as the interest in building my own mods to eventually making my own juices. Currently I am just enjoying the artsy side of making some cases for the batteries and learning. I like to think eventually the newness of it all will wear down and my spending will level out...but for the moment I am just treating myself to something better than the old smelly stuff with nothing to show for it.
You dont have to be a geek to be lewder in buy the nice pretty shinny stuff. Im a knuckle dragging construction worker. ;-)

I was fine for the 1st week with my lil eGo setup.........then I started hanging out here more so in retrospect, I can blame ECF for all my spending.

Not really a long-time vaper, but I realized I haven't bought any new gear for a couple of months. Well.. I did buy a hybrid, but not like I always have a shipment or 5 inbound at all times. I've gotten to the point where I have the gear I need, and there's nothing that will fill the "want" for something new. Consider me on the fence until something truly groundbreaking shows up. I no longer buy to try. It takes a lot of convincing to make me buy anything now. Very much unlike the first couple of months. I guess the magic is gone, and I see the gear for what it is. A wick, a coil, air intake and a battery. Boring... I know.
I have a couple of juices I could, and usually do, use as all-day-vapes. I order them as concentrates and mix myself. When doing so, I usually order a concentrate of a different flavor or two just to try out. But, I usually find myself vaping the same 2-3 juices all the time.
My purchases are down to nic base and concentrates every couple of months.
