I think its ridiculous to point a finger at any vendor or website. Heck, they have scanners now - person can walk by you at walmart, run the scanner and grab your card number while in your pocket.

My Visa has been compromised and stolen twice in the last 3 yrs. That's the world we live in, no sense in getting wild about it. Either use a card or don't have one. You aren't responsible for unauthorized charges anyway.

Agreed, credit card theft or some form of i.d. theft are just going to happen in the digital age.

I may be misreading, but please don't use 2 antivirus programs at once. They will conflict with each other. If you are just using one real time, and the other to scan as a 2nd opinion that may be okay. Both cannot be running simultaneously.

No of course not, I run one then the other. You would be surpised by what the 1st didn't list or mistakenly listed as a virus.

Ironically, as I had just read through this entire post, I received a phone call from my wife.

Last night, my wife received 3 phone calls in the middle of the night (3am). We both work early in the morning and because of the fact that the calls were coming from "UNKNOWN" we chose not to answer them. This morning on her way to work, she received another phone call from "UNKNOWN" and chose to answer it. It was our bank. They stated that last night, somebody had made several (20+) low dollar transactions on her credit card ($20 or less). Ironically the card was a MASTERCARD, and the card was last used in July 2011 and was currently paid off (Zero Balance). All charges were pending and cancelled by our bank. However, the credit card was linked to our bank accounts and debit cards. The bank is unsure what information might have been compromised.

As of right now, all of our accounts are frozen, the bank has setup 2 special "Prepaid Cards" for us to use. We now must transfer funds via phone from our accounts to the prepaid cards until they can issue us new cards and account numbers.
This is going to be a pain because we have auto-pay setup for everything.

The bank has suggested that we now "only" use a prepaid card for online purchases.

I just got a call from my bank yesterday that my master card had been compromised. This is the second time in one year. My bank doesn't make me sign an affidavit. They just go over the charges and take off the ones I tell them are fraud. Both my debit and cc are master cards and are linked to my bank account so maybe I should just stop using those.

I like the idea of a prepaid cc for on-line purchases but in reality your card can be hacked from anywhere you use them - not just on line.

I've seen a lot of comments on the forums lately from people who have had their credit cards compromised. It is scary, but it's definitely not limited to vapers who are purchasing supplies online. A coworker said her bank notified her of a charge for an airline ticket to Kuwait this week. Neither she nor her husband are vapers and they don't make a lot of online purchases. With a situation like this it can be difficult to tell where the breach actually occurred. We all need to be cautious when it comes to our credit accounts.

Sorry about the problems encountered here but on the bright side it brings awareness of the problem/ issue at hand. My wife works for a large financial institution ( Head Office) and this happens all the time- a very common occurrence. The ways it can happen:
- online with a website you purchased from
- financial instit hacked
- one of the many companies that the financial institutions sub work out to
- point of sale where you manually scan the card/ convenience store, etc
- atm
- keylogger and other progs installed on pc
- phishing
- stolen mail...always astounds me when I see houses with unsecured mailboxes
....the list goes on and on.
My best advice is to have the very best antivirus/ firewall/ spyware/ malware progs installed on your pc. Be diligent regarding updates to the above AND the browser AND the OE. I also go to reputable online scan sites every month.
Good luck and thank you for bringing up a topic many are unaware of.

This scares me a little, because I am an avid online purchaser. I could say I have a problem. I buy something online at least once a day. I will have to start doing the Wal-Mart pre-paid card from now on. I would had to have my Paypal, or my bank card information stolen. The good thing is Paypal caught it quickly. I am sorry you had to go though this.
