well, whatever you all wanna do for fun is fine, but i dont really think anyone here can be called an expert in this area...

most posts are recycled opinions and conjecture.

to say that anyone is a "guru" on this subject based on post numbers is laughable.

i agree with Ned,i think practical demonstration and concrete facts are far more useful than lip service.

Wells said Mr Darcy .I think it must be the British in us that keeps us sane from getting too excited over something and nothing point scoring palaver.
Isn't the authority and brainchild of this site British to.
Shouldn't he been notified first regarding members intention when using members personal information to come up with some sort of point scoring system.
How many administrators do we have in this forum.
Just because people have been off the cigarettes the longest. Made the most posts. read up on the law and politics of electronic cigarettes and perhaps the most educated doesn't give them the right to sit in their high chairs being king dong. But suckers fall for it so they must have come up on the last bucket of s...
What people should understand there is always somebody else out there as good as them.

As it happens I am considering adding to the forum a clever system called Vbexperience.

What this does is to change the rankings based on numerous elements in addition to post count which is, as mentioned above, a pretty useless way of determining how positive a member's overall contribution is.

It does seem to me that there is a need as a forum grows for new users to get some impression of who is making the most reliable assertions.

If anyone wants to have a look at what this system entails, please go to vBExperience - vBulletin.org Forum and post back your thoughts.

gosh...who cares about ranking all of a sudden?

is it really necessary to have the forum become elitist?

heres a radical approach...let people use their own gumption to form their own opinions based on a wide variety of views...they might even learn something for themselves...

its pretty sad when even a forum has to be dumbed down, and member appraisal introduced.

Wow, that's very interesting smokey! I've never heard of a program like that before. I'm going to read more. Thanks!

This mod was developed by me because I was never satisfied with the post count. Communities are not only defined by post count, they need much more parameters: Are the postings the user creates helpful? Are his threads frequently read? Does the user participate on the community by posting pictures, attachments, leaving visitor messages, tagging threads? All this can be answered with this mod.

And I have to disagree about "Guru." T-Bob has been here since January. Longer than most of us and has contributed a lot to this forum. I say it's cute, give it to him.

I think you should keep it as it smokey,
im a member of quite a few forums the biggest being, AVForums Home they just use the standard system like most forums.:)

Yes, but in addition to that they also have a thanks system and another system that gives them points for successful trading (a la ebay).

I guess my issue is that some people spend a lot of time and effort on this board coming up with excellent information for the rest of us, and this tends only to be recognised by the longer-term users.

Visitors and new members will have no idea who is contributing most, and by extension, who is likely to have the best information.

I don't see it as elitist, it's far more skewed at the moment since anyone can be a "senior member" simply by making lots and lots of one line posts.

Surely that's a bit daft?

From the intro of the VbExperience software that I've been considering installing:

This mod was developed by me because I was never satisfied with the post count. Communities are not only defined by post count, they need much more parameters: Are the postings the user creates helpful? Are his threads frequently read? Does the user participate on the community by posting pictures, attachments, leaving visitor messages, tagging threads? All this can be answered with this mod.

In other words, the system both rewards posters by recognising their contribution and encourages others to post useful information.

What are your thoughts?

well,in my opinion, for what its worth, this forum doesnt need to have a running competition to encourage members to share information and do their best to help-its already being done in a spirit of comradery-and personally i prefer that kind of ethos.

of course its your forum, and my take on it is probably in the minority anyway...

Minority or not (I have no idea), I agree with what you are saying. I would hate anyone to think that there is a competitive element to posting on this forum. I have been very careful not to hurt the spirit of camaraderie while I have made the necessary changes.

As the forum continues to expand, we need a way of differentiating those that make a large number of posts with those who make a smaller number of very useful and posts.

At the moment, the ranking does not reflect that at all. This is why I am proposing the Vbexperience system as an interesting alternative.

I don't think it would change the way members interact here, but I may be wrong.

I'm not competitive by nature. I'm just happy to be alive! :D Seriously.

But I do believe in giving people what they deserve. So many people work their asses off because they love what they do and don't even worry about getting noticed. I love their humility. It makes that person extra special. And it gives me the warm fuzzies to see a person like that get a little recognition.

Here's a real life example.

There is a man here in my hometown. 6 years ago, he was a down and out drug addict. Trouble with the law, etc. One morning, he found a place to get food, a place to sleep and some real help. He soon cleaned up his life. For the last 5 years, he has been helping those men who are wearing the shoes he used to wear. I watched while he worked hard to help these men live again. He runs a Men's Shelter and to date it is very successful.

My best friend and I visit him at the thrift store for the shelter (which he also runs). He is the happiest man alive. He loves life and embraces it. I have introduced him to several people who are in awe of this young man and find it hard to believe that he was ever in such bad shape.

Moving forward to a couple of months ago. There was the Christian Band "Third Day" coming in concert. I knew this man loved the group and he had already made plans to see them. I set it up for him to meet some of my contacts and he was able to MEET "Third Day." My contacts adored him and when I met up with this young man again just a couple of weeks later, he was beside himself because he got to meet this band. I told him...it's about time you were rewarded for all you do. He said that he was already rewarded. This was just a nice little bonus.

Hope you weren't bored with that story...but I'm thinking there are a few here that deserve that "nice little bonus." Even if it's just a little title under the name.

I know I was kind of against it at the beginning of the thread, but I read your link Smokey...and now I see it differently.

Tropical Bob, Darcy, Nazareth, Rat, dnakr... just to name some that I religiously read are very passionate about this issue in every avenue...the mechanics, health issues, legal issues, etc. I think they contribute MUCH to this board without demanding respect...and the humility to admit that they are not experts.

I think they deserve a little something. ) They've helped ME out a whole lot!
