My KFL dilema - do I need a mechanical mod to get the most out of dual coils?

The other day I received my 3rd KFL in the mail. I currently own 2 Provari's and had fallen in love with the look of the svoemesto with a Sticker, so I made an impulse buy and ordered an SMv3 Epsilon Kit and a Sticker. I run everything with 18650's BTW. I've been running my KFL's with a single micro coil (10-12 wraps around 5/64's drill bit using 30g Kanthal), but recently tried a dual micro coil set on my KFL's that are all 1-1.2ohm. I vape at 3.5v using cotton.

Now my problem is that I really wanted to go sub ohm and bought 28g Kanthal, but now I don't have a device that's capable of that. I've also read a lot of complaints about the Semovar. I've been vaping for a couple of years now but never knew that the SM couldn't go below 1ohm until after I ordered it (doh!). I feel like I have to buy mechanical mod now. Is it really worth doing? I've also heard good things about the dna chips. Would I be able to go sub-ohm on the SM if I change the chip?

This is just my own opinion, but I use a KFL clone on a Zmax, and I've made dual coils using 30g and nailed 1.3Ω. While it DID vape well, and it wasn't too difficult to build, my feeling was it took a little too long to "get up to speed" (heat up), and since I was making rather tight coils, I found one or both would burn cotton too often for my taste. Actually, that and the vape was a little too warm for my liking.

I have great luck just using 28g kanthal and a single coil, but not a tightly packed micro coil. I wrap my wire on a very narrow ring screw that's about 3/16th, usually 6 wraps or so gets me about .9Ω, and results in crazy good clouds and not cooking my cotton too quickly.

I'd say pick up a cheap mech clone and test it out to see if you like it with your KFL setup. If you don't, at least you didn't drop another $200 on something you might not use.

Although I've never tried dual sub ohm coil in a KFL, I imagine it would be a really warm vape. (maybe too hot)

Tastes vary so keep that in mind ..

I have a couple of KFL +. One of them I typically run at 1.3-1.4 ohms with a single microcoil on my Provari. Excellent vape overall. The other KFL+ I run at .9-1.0 ohm with a single microcoil on my mech and hands down I prefer the .9-1.0 build. I'm not sure I'd even say it's a warmer vape really.

When using the Provari, I'm typically running 4.2-4.4V and if anything I'd say that's the warmer vape. The lower resistance build only see's 4V+ for a brief period when the battery is fully charged, which isn't long at all. OTOH, the vape and flavor from the lower resistance build seems more dense or saturated if that makes any sense at all. I was describing it to a friend and struggling to come up with the right description but he knew what I meant as soon as he tried it.

Does that mean that buying a mech is the right move for you? Hehe .. no clue. If you want to run 1 Ohm or below and your only other mod is a Provari then the answer is yes you do. I find it worthwhile to own both but for every person like me you can bet there's another that would say otherwise.

As always, YMMV.

Innokin MVP2, V3, VTR, 134 series & Coolfire1&2 will fire as low as 0.8ohms (not sure on the SVD, never tried that mod)

They will fire down to .8ohms, but it is limited by the amp draw. At least on the MVP there is a 3amp limit(its actually more like 2.7). Meaning with a .8ohm coil, it wont fire above 2.4 volts(7 watts)

like the above post mentioned, sure maybe all of those mods can fire at a .8 resistance, well so can the provari. I have a provari v-2 and it can fire .8 coils all day long but because of the 3.5amp limit at .8 your only getting less then 3v to the coil. anyways in another post above one mentioned that they felt a difference between a provari vape at 1.3 ohms and a mech mod at 1 ohm, although I believe him imo theres not much difference. I vape a provari and also have mech mods and run micros in all of them and don't feel much if any of a difference between both examples. I believe this is because the power in both examples are about the same. now maybe if the wire gauges were different there might be more of a difference but if both are 28g wires then it will be close. maybe because the lower resistance coil has less wraps and less wattage the overall temp is less creating a different feel. imo a mechanical mod shines at super low resistances, like resistances at .7 and below. at these resistances the power starts to increase way beyond the capabilities of a vv device.
