My new KFL+ clone was firing for about 45 mins.

I got 2 of the Black Edition kayfun light clones that Vaper Joe advertised a while back. I built a 1.3ohm micro coil on one of them but it had a lot of wicking problems. I has working on figuring it out while using it was on my Chi You clone. Well I got fed up with it and sat it down for a while. What I didn't know was that my Panasonic battery's wrapper had worn a hole in the bottom, leading to a auto fire situation with the design of the switch.

I come back about 45 mins later to my mod sitting in a puddle of juice. I pick it up and can barely touch the kayfun since it is so hot. I quickly pull out the battery and set the mod aside to cool down. Surprisingly the battery is not that hot to the touch, I test it with my MM and it reads 2.7v. It was a pretty much fully charged 2900mah battery. The voltage was still above the 2.5v min on the battery so I let it cool down and charged it up, it seem to be fine.

Once the kayfun cooled down I took it apart to check the damage. The positive part of the build deck is now severely discolored, looks like I took a torch to it. The insulator now had cotton melted into it, and looks a little black in some spots but still functions. The coil looked like it had been running for a week and the cotton wick was solid black. I cleaned it up and fixed the wicking issue by making the juice channels deeper. It now works great and no bad taste from the insulator.

I guess the moral of the story is to always keep a close eye on the condition of your battery's. Well that and the Chi You really need some insulation on the switch. I was also wondering if that insulator is still safe to be using after melting a little? I am a little worried that this level of heat might have changed it chemically.

They tend to get a bit brittle and may impart a burnt flavor - once B-B-Q'd. You can buy genuine (and I seem to recall seeing clone insulators recently) insulators separately. Vaporev and a few others have genuine - you'll have to search for clones.

ok so I am not crazy. I thought I was being an idiot or not doing something right with my Chi You clone. It would fire even with the locking ring engaged with my Panasonic batteries (completely metal bottom). I put an AW IMR in there and it stopped doing it. The AWs have a tiny ring of heat shrink on the bottom. This is actually a design flaw?

Me and my kayfun sure see it as a design flaw, am working on a mod to fix that but don't really have a lot of extra throw left in the switch. My Panasonic NCR18650PD battery's do have the ring of insulation on the bottom similar to my aw battery's but it is not nearly as thick and a hole wore into it. My aw battery's seem to have a much nicer wrapping on them, but for now I have a little electrical tape wrapped around the bottom of my battery's overlapping the bottom.

I am not getting any burnt taste from the insulator so I am going to leave it in place for now. Especially since I can't seem to find a new one in stock anywhere. I will keep looking as having a few extras around won't be a bad thing. I am also thinking about replacing the my chi you clones with a couple nemesis clones.
