Hello all, I am new to all this vaping stuff, but I just wanted to throw out my experience as a way of saying thank you to all the members here for the wealth of knowledge and experience contained on this site and in the heads of its many members.
My wife and I have both been smoking for over 30 years, and have tried quitting many times, with all varieties of "smoking cessation" aids. I am a PAD smoker of filtered cigars, at $12.50 a pack, my wife 1/2 a pack a day of cigs at $10.00 a pack.
After much reading on this site, I decided to go with the Redds, the reason being that I needed a "grab and go" solution. I don't mind spending the time filling cartos ahead of time, but during the day I am on my feet 10-12 hours, and I don't stop for coffee or lunch breaks (The joys of the self-employed) My shop's smoking policy is "Smoke 'em if ya got 'em." Just no cig butts on the floor, so when I smoke, it is with a cig hanging out of my mouth as I work, so that ruled out any kind of maintainence or user involvement during the day.
After doing a search here and reading a bunch of the reviews from members about the Redds and others, it seemed like they were the best for vapour (Canadian spelling) production in a cigalike.
I recieved my Redds starter kit and a variety of juices on Friday, thinking to figure it all out on Sat morning and giving it a go, with the intention of just making the transition a little at a time, once I got the hang of it. What I discovered was that it was very easy for me to make the switch, I think because of the convienience of the cigalike form factor for the type of work I do. The first day (and every day since) I have been down to 2 analogs. My wife has dropped to 4 or 5 a day, however she is a different type of smoker, she is more prone to working for 5 or 6 hours, then stopping for a quick smoke before getting back at it.
Sunday morning I put in an order for 2 more Redds kits, one for my wife, and one for my Mother-in-law, as they both loved it as well. I understand that the difference in equiptment to what a lot of experienced vapers are using would give a more satisfying experience, but that was not what I was looking for at this time, I was was looking for a "less-worse" option to analogs, and I think I found it. This is not to say I won't move on to try other things at a later date, but I am very happy with the overall experience, and I am pretty sure even then, I will keep using this one as my "grab and go".
For me, this is how I would rate the Redds:
Pros:
Convienience - with the PCC that holds an assembled Redds, a charging battery and 3 cartos, this was the grab and go solution I was looking for.
Form factor - for me, this is perfect, as I can stick it behind my ear like a pencil, and it stays there.
Vapour - I can make just as big of clouds of vapour as I could clouds of smoke, so that experience is the same.
Cons:
Weight - heavier than a cig, so I can't leave it hanging out of my mouth while I am working.
Battery life - I knew this was going to be a factor, so I have also ordered extra batteries and USB chargers so I can keep a charging battery in the truck, another one in the computer, another one in the house, as well as the one charging in the PCC.
Flavour - I'm not sure if this is a con or not, but for me, I don't get a huge amount of flavour, but I don't know at this point if it is dead tastebuds or not.I understand that with better equiptment I will get more flavour, but that is not a deal breaker for me at this point, I am sticking to stronger flavours for now.
We will see how my Mother-in-law gets along with it, as she is a "puff-puff" smoker, she will grab a smoke, take 3 or 4 puffs, and then put it out for the next craving, so I think the biggest thing for her will be getting the nic level correct for her. I ordered samples of a variety at the start, with varying nic levels as well, and started low, then worked up to find a level that would work for me. I am at 24mg, my wife is good at 16mg.
I realize this is a long post, but I just wanted to help make the point to other newbies as well, this is an individual sport, and I got lucky on the first try, but I also will continue experimenting. I also think it is a good starting point, as you can order a Redds single with 1 charged battery and 1 pre-filled or blank carto for $10.00 plus shipping, pretty cheap to give it a go without a large investment. That is actually what I had done, along with a sampler pack of juices, then after more reading decided to order the starter kit anyway, and they both showed up on the same day.
If you managed to get this far, then thanks for reading, and thank you to all here at ECF that helped me down this path, simply by being members and posting about your own experiences, I had a huge resource at my fingertips.
Thank you
