For those who are looking for VV Regulators:

They have LM350T 3-amp regulators for 9 bucks for 10 pc .. on Ebay, free shipping. I think That's a pretty good price.
10PCS,LM350 LM350T Adjustable Voltage Regulator | eBay

Also LM1084IT-ADJ (5 amp ver) for 5.50US for 10 pc, including shipping..even better price!!! WOW, I bought 20, maybe I aughta buy another 20 before they sell out!!!
10 LM1084 LM1084IT-ADJ Adjustable 5A Voltage Regulator | eBay

Haven't tried the 1084's out yet, but I have some, so my next VV will be 1084-based.

Of course, shipping from the orient takes a while (unless you live in the orient, of course, Donptal and Rex) .. but I am never in a hurry for anything :blink::facepalm:

After I finish up my next OKR based mod, I was going to build a VV passthrough with the LM1084. Since I can just run it off a wall wart and runtime is not a concern, it fits the bill perfectly. Now to find a cheap 4+ amp, 12v wallwart...

As you are stepping down the voltage from the 12V you don't need that high of an amperage. You should be good with 1.5 or 2A at 12V.

You know what ... you can use just about any old laptop power supply .. betcha got at least one of those laying around somewhere. They are generally at least 3 amps, usually more. You can ebay them really cheap. Example:

LAPTOP CHARGER FOR ACER GATEWAY 19V 3.42A AC ADAPTER | eBay

Check the chip specs, but I believe it can handle input/output voltage ratios up to about 30 volts, so even a 19-20V ps would work great.

Another thing: if you use a barrel-type power connector (like a notebook) in your PT, you can get an auto lighter cable with a matching plug and use it while motoring as well :?:

Just ordered 2 of these (one for home, one for work)
AC 100V-240V Converter DC 12V 2000mA/2A Power Supply US | eBay

and these
10 DC Power Cable Female Plug Connect 5.5x2.5mm Socket | eBay

Going to make a poorvari passthrough that I can just plug in at home, unplug and take to work and plug in. Only thing I'll have to carry will be the PT itself.

Now just have to decide what to put it in before the parts get here :D

Awesome idea, dude!! Now the only other thing you need is a ciggie lighter adapter cord like
Car Cigarette Lighter Coil Power Cord 12-24V2A fuse LED | eBay
cig2.jpg

Of course, you need to make sure it's got the right size plug and has enough amperage capacity for your PT, but then it will work en-route too :)

Hi, Ive just got some LM1084IT-ADJ 5amp regulators. I will be using 2x14500 3.7v in series for 7.4v. I dont know how to work out how to set the Minv and the Maxv with resistors. I would like a minv of 3.2v and a Maxv of 6.5v and also what pot should I use.

Im a noob at building mods!!!! but willing to learn
Regards
Matt

I have a question about the supply needed for a linear reg mod with a wall wart. After looking into the way these function, my understanding is that the excess voltage is given off as heat, i.e., that voltage isn't converted into a higher current with a small loss such as in a switching regulator.

Does this mean I need to find a power supply which gives me desired voltage + dropout as well as my desired current? I usually vape at around 14 watts, which means 3 amps at 4.5v. Does my power supply need to have a 3+ amp rating along with voltage closer to 7v instead of 12v?

Yes, the closer your supply is to your usage voltage the less waste heat that will be generated. I would look for about double the expected amperage draw however, or at least 1/2 more.
