I am curious if i can taste more flavours in a really gunky net. It sounds good for the taste.

Whats about healthy reffering the lungs and gunk with fine tobacco particles ? Is it without any danger to vape a juice which is filtered only through a coffee filter ? Do we have a doc on this board ?

For sure gunky juices are the tastiest, except when the gunk makes the vape taste like a stale ashtray, and hence frequent rebuilds...such is the life of a net vapers...

I have always suspected the real net making skill lies in filtering to keep as much good flavour as possible whilst limiting gunk as much as possible...the balance between the two is key for me at least...

You almost soLd me on making my own juices...but what about the time to collect, clean and sterilise the jars...the time to filter after extraction...and then bottle...doesn't mean it's not worthwhile but has to be more than 35 minutes all considered...?

Yes the filtering is THE hold up alright!
You are Soooo correct about gunking, but at times I think it is worth it. As to the 35 minutes, well that's just to get the baccy into the jars and extracting. A wash in the dishwasher and I am good to go. Never had "whitesnake"
I probably just stuck my foot in my big mouth.

I need some tips on extracting. Maybe there's a different thread, but this is the one I've been reading, so I thought I'd try here.

I wanted to try a heat-assisted approach, mainly because its quicker.

This was my process...
1. Put about half of an ounce of tobacco in Mason jars, then pour PG over it until the PG barely covers the top. Put the lids on the jars, just slightly tightening them.
2. Put the jars in the crock pot and add water to the bottom of the crock pot until the water reaches the height of the tobacco in the jars. I didn't think to add water between heating cycles so that may have been part of my issue. I put the lid on the crock pot before turning it on, and took it off when I was letting it cool.
3. I did 3 cycles of running the crock pot on low for about 8 hours, then letting it sit the next day to cool. I had a bit of extra time between the 1st two cycles because I was starting my work week, so after the first cycle, it cooled for about a day and a half.
4. After the 3rd heat cycle, I let it all sit for about 24 hours to cool before starting to filter. At this point, all of the jars were dark in color, no matter which tobacco I had used.
5. I used an Aeropress for the first filtering. I dumped everything from the jar into the press, then pressed as much PG out as I could. The PG went out in to a coffee filter over a cup. The PG was very dark and seemed to smell like chewing tobacco, so I'm not sure if I messed something up in the process above.
6. After filtering through the coffee filter, I poured the PG in to a syringe with cotton at the bottom and filtered it in to a small bottle for keeping.

I used AAA Burley, Dark Burley, Long Cut VA, Cigar Leaf, and Toasted Burley, all in separate jars. I bought the tobacco from Pipes and Cigars. I'm wondering if I did something incorrectly in this process because the two that I have filtered so far (Long Cut VA and Toasted Burley) smell very similar and are both very dark. I used the crock pot because that's what I have, and since my stove is gas, I didn't want to leave it running on low for long periods of time. I don't know for sure what temperature the crock pot gets to on low heat, so I'm kind of worried I may have burned it.

Anyway, thoughts, ideas, suggestions, comments? I also have some in jars just doing a cold maceration, but was hoping to have some of both to see the difference. I appreciate any help you all can offer.

It is definitely "better", if you are chasing that elusive, cigarette- or cigar-like taste. I feel like the gunk starts burning with a real smokey aftertaste and that somewhat enhances flavor until you wait too long and then it just becomes a full ashtray.
As far as coils are concerned, I only use nets in my Squapes, W deck, with 3mm coil. Anything less, and it's gunk galore.

Sounds like you did fine. Probably didn't need so many heat cycles, but I don't think that hurt anything. All my extracts are very dark. Now you use that extract as a % of favoring in your finished juice. I usually use 15-20% extract, plus pg, vg and nic to the mixture I like. I use the ejuicemeup calculator to determine how much of each to use.

Don't see anything wrong here. Might have let them sit cold for a couple of weeks before filtering. Rushing this rarely enhances the end product.

Dark is expected. These will be very gunky with the filtering used. Lots of long-chain organics got through. Try mixing at 20 percent and adjust from there.

I will try the next extract with gunk before the filtering through a microfilter. Do you think so or have you really tasted it ? I have thought that you dont want to try an own home made or was it from a friend ?

I've found our crock pots to be pretty hot, even on "warm". I ended up switching to a hot plate to have better control. I might suggest getting a cooking thermometer to monitor the temps and I try to keep it around 125-130 F. I do the cycles over five days and then let them sit in a drawer for a couple of weeks. I use the Aeropress with two of their coffee filters for the first pass and found 7cm Ahlstrom filters (I think 2.5 micron) on Amazon that I don't even trim for the final filtering, warming in a microwave for 30 seconds prior to keep it moving. This is for cigars, for pipe I'd only go three day cycles and cooler temps, maybe 115 F.

I use these in the 5 micron size. I get a sheet and cut a circle slightly bigger than the press on my French Press coffee maker.

Small-Particle-Filtering Felt Sheets
McMaster-Carr

I know in the past some have used lab filters in smaller microns, just too expensive for me

Ahlstrom Qualitative Filter Paper, 2.5 micrometer Retention, Medium Flow, Grade 601: Science Lab Qualitative Filter Paper: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

Hope this helps! I am sure others can tell you what they use.

I use these as the last of three steps. First is the nut sack, then regular coffee filter and then the Ahlstrom.

I was on the verge of getting an ultrasonic cleaner until @AnthonyB mentioned a rice cooker. I had one of those. I let it heat up with closed lid then put it on Keep Warm with the lid open. It hovers at 100 deg.
ETA: The rice cooker bath comes after I mix it up with PG/VG.

I have read different opinions referring alcoholic based juices. Some people said that it goes into the blood immediately and some have said there is no matter. Have you ever vaped a juice with 10% ethanol for example ?

Jonny, I refer only to the flavor of the alcoholic beverage juice like the taste of beer or scotch. The alcoholic content itself all gets evaporated so there should never be any alcohol content left in the finished product.

Dont understand. If a have a hot ethanol extract without pg and put 10 percents to pg base i have 10 percent ethanol in the juice or do you mean only the taste ?

You wanted to say that ethanol has no taste ?

I am still thinking about to make such a juice but i have read that ethanol could be bad for the lungs.

At the moment i have a cold and my bronchias dont like juices. It hurts during vaping. I am thinking about how to make a juice easier to breathe for the lungs. More vg and less nicotine or smooth nicotine ? I havent tried the possibilities, did you ?

On the other side i am thinking or spinning around about the future of vaping. Perhaps you can inhale some healthy stuff like a remedy or a medicine. Vaping could be medicine if have problems with your lungs or bronchias ?

There is only one way and you won't like to hear it. Vape less or don't vape at all while you are sick, and definitely don't smoke !

Buddy, I wanted to ask and try to figure out if I'm missing on something. I didn't ask you, so don't feel obliged to read my question or respond to it. Capisci?

You know it's about time we had a good dust up in here. It's been a while. Arguments and disagreements get ratings.

The occasional dust up is a sign of a good healthy vibrant, dynamic and busy thread.
