You'll want unflavored nic for your base, not flavored, and you'll want it to be a higher mg than the juice will eventually be, since you're diluting it with the other ingredients. I suggest a base nic at least twice as potent as what you want the end result to be. So, if you want to make 18mg juice, use at least 36 mg base. In my opinion, it's better to go much higher on the base nic (it gives you more "room" to add other ingredients). 60mg is a good starting place.

Then you buy the flavorings that you want to use. Which flavorings depend on what juice you want to make. The calculators really are the easiest way to determine amounts to use.

In general, you'll want to decide what pg/vg ratio you want. It's probably easiest to start with whatever ratio you're already vaping, but common ones are 80/20, 70/30, and 50/50. The unflavored nic will come in a base of pg or vg, depending on what you buy, and that counts toward the pg/vg ratio. Personally, I prefer using pg-based nic. For simplicity, I count the flavorings as pg when computing my ratio.

In your calculator, you specify how much juice you want to end up with, what the mg of your unflavored nic is, what mg you want the juice to end up being. Find a recipe you want to make (most calculators come with a set of recipes, and you can find many here on this site), enter the flavors and percentages for them into the calculator along with how much of a % of the juice should be flavoring. If you're unsure about that, try it out at 15%.

The calculator will then tell you in absolute amounts how much of what to mix together.

Some general advice: when trying new recipes, make small tester batches without any nic at all. The nic is the expensive part, and if you're like me, you'll find yourself tossing out a lot of tests before you get the right mix. Once you have the right mix, make a small "proof" batch with the nic and taste it. That way you can make any final adjustments to the flavoring and get it just the way you want it. It beats making 30ml of juice that ends up getting poured down the drain!

Also, read all the stickies on this forum! Also, also, don't be shy about asking questions here. DIY is like cooking, and sometimes questions can seem basic or downright stupid -- but they're not. There's lots of little tricks and bits of knowledge that can be mined from the brains of the good folks here.
