It almost looks jammed but have you tried soaking it in alcohol (Vodka) to see if it breaks up the residue around it?

the whole square thing unscrews out, not just the flat part at the top.

When I've unscrewed it before that metal piece stays in the tank.

Sorry I didn't get back sooner but I got wrapped up in Hulu.

As far as time goes, it just depends on the gunk and how much.

Sorry, I had to giggle...............But those sections can be a pain on any tank setup.

A pair of rubber palm gardening Gloves really helps with grip.
