I have a couple of fs 510s and really like the vapor when the batts are fresh off the charger, but I am having little luck with them holding a charge and have been through too many batteries to keep throwing money at this with the same results! It would not be practical to have anything usb connected and I don't really think I can afford a mod yet. I have been looking at eGo and various tank models and CANNOT decide! I diy my own juice- flavor is a big, fun deal to me. Would really appreciate advice from someone who has been down this road and found a model that has big vapor and long life batteries w/o giving up flavor. Don't know if I am asking for a miracle, but really would appreciate help!

The 510s put out the same voltage wether fully charged or almost dead. It's always 3.2v, since they are regulated. The ego/riva are the same voltage, except they have about 6+times the run time as a normal 510 battery. If you're happy with the flavor/vapor/throat hit of a stock 510 battery, I'd give the ego/riva a try. If you want a little more power, and a user replaceable battery, there are several box mods that are inexpensive and also the newly revisited sparkplug mod.

If you like the 510s, upgrade to an eGo or a Riva. You can get them for a very reasonable price at Liberty Flights. Great warranty and customer service also.

The newer eGos run a bit hotter, ~3.4v, and the new SE Rivas are the true 3.7v devices. Really nice!

Get some 2.0 and 2.5Ω Boge cartos, or an eGo-t type B atty and a box of fillerless tanks. I also like the new dual-coil cartomizers (Nhaler has a great selection of those). Who needs a mod?

Good luck!

Agree with Katya and Red, but just as an option, not all mods are expensive:

Here's one vendor:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...uality-3-7v-box-mods-19-5v-box-mods-28-a.html

I'm guessing you don't have a battery chargers for 14500 batteries so you'd need 'package B' to start. The batteries are 900mAh and should give you a good 8-9 hours of vaping - the higher the mAh the longer the voltage holds up.

There are other choices - ken's 3.7 Box Mod and Bartleby - Bartleby

My top choice would still be the eGo-t - I also DIY and I get great flavor from the B-type tanks/attys. If you go that way, check out the eGo-t threads - there's certain things that you should know before starting - how to do the hole in the tank, clipping the chad that results, wick alignment, etc. It's simpler than it seems but just a few tips help avoid some pitfalls early on.
