Hi, very new vaper here and new to a forum! I’m the type of person who hates to bother anyone! My story is back InApril I took the leap and stopped smoking and started vaping to be honest I was so proud of myself because it was something I thought I could never do, I got a pockex and 18ml strength juice from my local vape shop. I found the vape really good didn’t want a ...! Then I started having trouble catching my breath ended up going to hospital, had chest X-ray bloods and all came back fine they told me to go home and try and relax and stop vaping as “we don’t know what’s in them” said the doctor started on patches weeks on my breathing is still the same they’ve put me on tablets for anxiety is I’ve kept hyperventilating which is a bit better now but last week was so hard just in the patches I started back vaping because I haven’t smoked for thee months I had the 12ml strength oh and it’s lovely my chest is the same but a bottle of juice is lasting me two days do you think that’s to much Vaping? Oh and why is everyone an expert on why vaping is bad for you!! Going though a bit of a ruff time at the moment but my family are wonderful in keeping me calm and so supportive sorry about the long post but I wanted to get it all off my chest literally thanks x

I’m going to guess the bottle is 30mls? I really doubt it’s the amount of juice or how high the nic is, and when you’re first quitting it’s pretty common to use a higher nic and vape a lot.

My next guess is, if it’s vape related, it’s probably due to the pg content of your juice. Some people are sensitive to that.

Isn’t the pockex a pod system? Because those will mostly use a higher pg, like 50/50 pg/vg.

You might try a device that can handle a higher vg juice and see if there’s improvement.

Btw, when folks come to ECF and ask if their health issue is due to vaping, we all tell them to go to the doctor. I’m glad you did that, at least rule other problems out. Good for you.

Middle aged woman here also, and I was utterly confused when I started vaping, so no worries.

You asked to the effect of going through a bottle of 12mg/ml (the nic strength of the juice) in two days was a lot.

And my reply was asking if you have a 30 ml ( that’s how much juice in the bottle, about 1oz) which is a common size. Sometimes you’ll see a 60 or 120 ml bottle also though.

Juice can come in many nic strengths, from zero to 12 or 24 or higher. I started with 24 mg/ml ( milligrams per milliliter) because I was a heavy smoker. I now use 6 mg/ml. If you’re feeling satisfied with vaping 12 is working, but you’ll know if it’s not enough and you could go higher safely.

Pg and vg are the base of the juice. Pg is less thick than vg, and generally more of it is used in pods and mtl, or higher ohm coil tanks. I’ve always found pg a bit too harsh so I mainly vape at least 70-75% vg. It’s thicker and works better in coils under 1.0 ohms, generally speaking.

See? E-cigs don't contain magical unicorn juice. We do know what's in it.

I'd find a different doctor.
Best of luck, it may just be the tar leaving your lungs, but I am not a doctor. I don't think the one you saw should be one either though.

There is not enough information about vaping here yet. Doctors are going to assume the worst until it’s proven what harm vaping can and cannot cause, but I do agree that they will blame you for your lifestyle if they can’t easily figure out your symptoms.

That's the typical reaction when the medical community doesn't keep up with modern scientific studies. We do basically know what is in e-liquid. Pg (propylene glycol), Vg (vegetable glycerin), flavoring agents, and liquid nicotine.

You're second question is a bit more complex to explain. Here in the USA the vaping industry is competing directly with Big Tobacco and Big Pharma for consumers' dollars. BT and BP are losing big time money to vaping, so in typical capitalistic methodology they put out anti-vaping propaganda, even to the point of sponsoring fake studies to sway public opinion on e-cigarettes.

In the United Kingdom, BT and BP don't have the influence that they have in the USA, so that the studies that come from the UK are much more truthful and scientific in nature. The UK actually has vape stores in hospitals to promote a healthier lifestyle for current smokers. New Zealand is promoting vaping in hopes of being smoke-free in a few years.

The FDA, who is in charge of regulating the vape industry in the US, is on record saying that vaping could save lives, is caught between a rock and a hard place. It receives funding from BT and BP, and they don't wish to cut off the hand that feeds them.

To get a bit more up to date on vaping terminology, I recommend that you read over this blog: Good Starter Setups for a Beginner Vaper

Hi, @Milliemoo. So sorry you're having these troubles. You'll find lots of comfort here.

@DeloreRose mentioned that the PG (propylene glycol) content in your e liquid might have something to do with your breathing problems, and she may well be right. For me, though, it's the vegetable glycerin (VG) that can cause trouble: makes me very phlegmy and causes my chest to feel heavy.

Sorry for adding another layer of complexity here. I know that this late-middle-aged (early-old? what does sixty-one count as?) woman was quite overwhelmed at the start. Don't be discouraged, and don't feel shy about asking questions here. This place is full of kind, knowledgeable people who are happy to help.

First of all, hello @Milliemoo.
CluelessGraveAbyssiniancat-size_restricted.gif

Could you please confirm what country you're based in please? It would help a little, but from the term ... for coffin nails I would assume you're from the UK. But I could be wrong.

If so, 10ml bottles of liquid? No real issue with that, can go through 10ml in a day myself. Sometimes though the weather and particulates in the air affect my breathing (Asthma) or if I'm ill, like at this moment in time. Every time I go to the Dr's it happens!

But also some of your issues may be to do with your body detoxing and also a possible sensitivity to Propylene Glycol, as others have stated it's a known issue with vaping. And don't forget that with vaping you're ditching a load of extra chemicals that are present in Tobacco, you may consider looking into WTA (Whole Tobacco Alkaloids) as they may help you further.

And by all means ask questions, we all started somewhere before we got to where we are now. We'll try to help you as much as we can.

When one drops cigs and starts vaping any number of weird things can happen as the junk from the cigarettes starts to leave your body. Generally the effects are temporary.

Everyone is an expert on why vaping is bad for you because there is a lot of money behind anti-vaping marketing and they make sure to push a lot of negative stuff much of which is false. This is somewhat dependent on what nation you are in.

5ml of 12mg/ml is 60mg of nic a day. Not all that much, really.

Not sure what you mean by “the same” in this case.

Thank you for replying I am definitely going to go back to the vape shop and ask about the pg and vg because my chest does sometimes feel heavy! And know I now what to ask about
