Most doctors don't even know. Ask 9 out of 10 doctors and they will know very little, if anything, about electronic cigarettes.

Note: I also have the throat irritation from PG. 80/20 causes the irritation for the first 5-6 puffs, then it goes away. If I wait an hour to puff again, it comes back, then goes away. This doesn't happen with 70/30 mixes

Any decent allergist will go over the individual ingredients without bias.

I only get symptoms as described by the OP when deeply inhaling into the lungs, when I was trying to use my PV like a cigarette and going hard and heavy on high nicotine (for me) liquids.

You just don't need to do it.

Once I learned to "inhale" like I do with cigars (which I will never give up), I was fine.

Just take a long, slow draw. Inhale into the nasal and esophageal cavities, or swallow. And slowly exhale.

Tons of suggestions
Most only based on personal experience

Only your body has the answer that is correct for you.

vaping ingredients are likely no different that many other things people encounter in life.
Some cannot eat strawberries
Milk is deadly to others
while Sugar will Drop a diabetic

However there are acceptable safe substitutes for almost everything.

Ok so I have been off e-cigs for several days now and went back to smoking analogs. My chest doesn't hurt during the day, but at night (say 9 PM), it starts in again. It's like a dull pain and sorta radiates to my back. I am also kinda short on breath (my lungs always feel "full"). I have anxiety issues, so when this starts happening, I get all anxious and my heart starts racing and I begin freaking out (lol). Part of it is the pains, but the pains sorta bring on my anxiety which makes it worse. I think the pains are real and not just "stress" because I can be sitting back relaxing when they begin happening.

I went to the doc about 2 weeks ago when this first started happening. They did a full blood workup and said I have no cardiac condition. The doc did a chest X-ray and she said she saw some "irritation" in my lungs and thought it could be a touch of bronchitis. She asked me why my eyes were so bloodshot. In any case, she gave me an antibiotic injection and sent me home. I also tested negative for pneumonia so we ruled that out.

I do have asthma (or I did as a kid) but as an adult I very rarely have any issues with it (usually it only acts up around cat dander) so I don't know how that plays into all of this. Also, for the past two weeks my eyes have been bloodshot. This usually only happens to me when I am around something I am allergic to (like cats).

At any rate, this is why I am thinking I do indeed have an allergy to something in my e-liquid. I think I also understand why it only happens at night -- that's when my wife gets home and begins vaping. After a couple of hours of her vaping, I start to get the chest pains. Or, it could be completely coincidental, I don't know.

This all really sucks because when I vaped I had no desire to smoke, but the pains and worry are not worth it. I will have to use the pach I guess. I quit for a full year one time with the patch, but started smoking again one night when I was at a night club drinking.

So, just putting this out there for anyone else who might have experienced similar symptoms. I don't know if it's the PG, VG or flavorings, and I really don't feel like experimenting to find out. Also, since e-cigs are so new, there isn't a lot of research behind them. Most doctors look at you like you have two heads when you tell them you are vaping. This, to me, is a problem and I really hope we can get some funding for some real research.

At least with analogs I know what I am getting. Sure, I am getting a slow death, but at least I know I can do it in comfort. lol

Been at it the vaping thing for close to two weeks now. Saturday I started having some chest pains, so I went to a local clinic to get checked out. They took a chest x-ray and drew blood for a CBC and other routine tests. Doc said the chest x-ray showed some inflammation of the lungs, and she wanted to rule out pneumonia and Legionairre's disease (we've had a few cases of it locally). She gave me an antibiotic shot, told me to come back in a few days, and sent me on my way.

So I went back today to get my blood test results and everything came back fine. I am negative for pneumonia and everything else that was tested for. She said my lungs sounded good, my cardiac function was good and I am basically in good shape.

So I come home and begin vaping. And wham, here comes those chest pains again. Not only that but my eyes become really bloodshot (doctor noticed that the other day when I went in). So, after a few minutes of vaping, I have to go lie down. My chest feels "tight" and it hurts all the way to my back. It really sucks. It takes a couple of hours, but eventually the inflammed feeling goes away and my eyes return to being white.

I get my juice from my local vape shop. He told me he does 30/70 PG/VG mix. I have no idea if I am allergic to the PG, the VG or the food flavorings and I don't really feel like experimenting to find out. I guess I am one of the unlucky 5% who is allergic to vaping.

Oh well, I tried, but it's back to analogs for me.

What you describe as your chest pains is exactly what I feel when using standard PG/VG mixes. I went to 100% PG free and was OK.

I've since gone to DIY and anything over 10% PG would make me feel that way (it's hard to find PG free flavorings). Since doing DIY and using 10% PG I'm able to handle that mix more than I originally could (I'd use my 10% along with some PG free through the days).

sounds like you where really looking for a way to start smoking again instead of trying different things to figure out what the problem was

Not really, any physical discomfort, is the body's way of handling telling you, some thing is not right. I think if the OP just wanted to go back to smoking, he would not have made his post here. IMHO :glare:

Interesting:

I am experiencing increasing signs of sensitivity to a juice ingredient or ingredients.

I am currently developing challenge tests to try to discover the culprit.

Vaping 100% unflavored VG with 0mg nicotine does not cause any reaction, so I can probably rule out VG. I doubt nicotine is the problem, but my next test will be 100% unflavored VG with nicotine, which I also happen to have on hand.

Right now my primary suspect is PG, because I have read it's the most common allergy/insensitivity problem, but I can't yet rule out a common flavoring or sweetener.

Depending on who you get your juice from you may be able to check the sweetener too. Most use stevia AMD you can get that at walmart in the sugar isle.
