New atty, burnt taste: is this because they are new or did I burn it myself?

Been at this a while, mostly with cartos or regular attys. Just picked up some 2.0 ohm 510 attys last week with a Riva kit.

I tried to clean the factory primer off the coil with some 100% pg, and it did indeed taste awful!

Once I'd gone thru maybe 10-12 drops I tried to do a short "dry burn", maybe 2-3 seconds, see if anything else was on the coil. Didn't notice any taste other than the PG itself.

Now I've tried several diff juices, both dripping and with a standard cart. Initially the flavor/vapor is just perfect, then it goes downhill fast.

Maybe my expectations coming from carto-land are a bit off. How many "puffs" can you expect to get off a freshly filled 510 cart? I'm getting maybe 6-8? Dripping gets me 2-3 before it tastes funny and burnt.

I was wondering where the cutoff is between low-rez and normal-rez, is it between 2.0 and 2.5? Obviously a 1.6 Cisco is LR, but wasn't sure if it was a black/white type thing, or more of a grey gradient between LR and NR.

I've been dripping 2-3 drops when I drip on the bridge, added a few drops of VG to my 80/20 mix to help out. Direct dripping seems to be getting better, if I don't dry the atty out too much it *seem* to stay fairly consistent. Now I'm having trouble monitoring my input so it doesn't gurgle! :)

If I can keep the atty wet and not gurgling, it works pretty well. I was prolly letting it get too dry I suppose eh?

I just recently got 4 new LR's. After debridging and dewicking them, I found that I had gotten used to only adding a couple of drops to my very used old LR's and the new ones got that burnt taste after only a couple of drags. Because the new Attys have a nice clean coil they burn through the juice alot quicker so more drops were needed ( 5-6 ) in order to avoid that burnt taste.

Yes, with some trial and error and the suggestions made here, the 2-3 drops is working very well. It's like "knowing" when the carto is about to go off, or just about ready to burn. Once you can get that "taste/smell" you just drip some more and keep movin'.

The carts I was using with this atty prolly are not able to keep up, if I take a good draw then set it down for a time, come back to it the cart is fine, but I rarely roll that way. :) Will have to pick up some more higher rez attys for these carts.

I don't drip. I do use a Riva SE ( Special Edition) with the 2.0 ohm atty's they come with. The SE has a larger battery, a true 3.7v ( 4.2 fully charged) 750 mah At these voltages this atty is perfectly matched to get you a vape sweet spot from between 6 and 8 watts.

The regular Riva takes 2.2 ohm atty's so if that's the one you have, I wouldn't go below this. You have to balance the power/ability to vape off juice at a given speed with the vaping properties of your atty coil. Going to an LR sometimes won't necessarily cut it.

I use the 510 carts that came with the Riva and I can fill them with 18-20 drops. I can get 2 1/2 to 3 hours of continuous vaping out of them before having to top off again.

As long as the atty stays wet, you should not get a burnt taste. If you have stuck on crud from burned juice on the wick you need to be sure the dry burn burns all that off before it will taste good again. I'm using an atty going on two weeks now with no problems. All I have done for it it blow it out and do very small dry burns now and then, it's still working great.

Really? I do have one of the SE models, and using the stock 2.0 ohm attys that came with the SE kit (well, technically they are the same AS those that came in my kit). These are the ones I'm getting the burning taste.

How "hard" are you vaping when you use carts? I was able to get about 10-12 drops of 80/20 juice in one of these stock-kit carts, no more. Even stood the Riva on end to give the juice a little gravity to help the bridge wick it down. As mentioned earlier, the first 2-3 pulls are nice and smooth, but it goes downhill fast. Since I've never used carts ever before, I wasn't sure of my expectations. I'll have to check out a few more of these carts, cuz I'd sure like to get 2-3 hours out of them!

I try not to vape, 'suck' real hard.. more like sucking on a straw. I don't keep the button pressed for very long 4 seconds max. If you watch this on a clock, 4 seconds is really a long time. When I fill mine I put in a few drops and then tap it on a table to cause the liquid to go down, then put a few more drops in etc. Sometimes I cut just a tiny amount off the filler, about a 6th or 5th.. some people cut them in half, but the more you cut off the more it can leak. Just make sure the filler is not pushed down into the cart, but is flush with the cart opening.

You know how you puff on a cigar.. give it a tiny little primer puff to get it going.. well I often do that with the e-cig.. just a lil puff (not inhaled) to help get it wicking good before a long puff.
