I still haven't prepped a 500 wick, yet I have the mesh on hand. I still need to pick up the 28 and the 30 gauge wire too. This post is inspiring! (you always inspire, CW!) It's time for me to get my quest on and put this at the top of priority list again.

Just took this 30 gauge. Any questions. :)

I couldn't believe the difference the 500 mesh made. It wicks so much better than the 400. I don't think I will go with the solid wick though seeing that with the small air hole I am getting more than enough juice. It almost seems like its a metal straw that can handle all the heat you throw at it.

Glad to hear you have it tamed down to your personal preference. It's a shame having to leave out the fill screw though. When everything rolls together just right, it can be left in without any change in wicking.
A few things to try or check for that might help improve the wicking:
Is the wick end inside the tank cut at a 45% angle? (cut and then retorched to dissolve any frayed ends).
Did you use a straightened out paperclip to use as a rolling tool inside the wick? Using a tool like this, helps to assure a good solid air hole through the middle.
Perhaps the wick has too many layers and is rolled too tightly? Perhaps the opposite? Perhaps there's not enough rolls?
The coils are snug but not tight and choking the juice flow right? Can you gently lift and twist the wick out of the coils and reinsert?

It's usually one little thing... one tiny little thing that can be so exasperating. Best of luck, and don't give up! You'll soon have it all, the wicking, the flavor and the no spill/leaking :) Honest!

Thanks Uma & jhj, all of the above was in order. But!!!! in my haste to get puffin I did forget one little thing! Breaking in period!!! all is good now with fill screw in place. Have some #325 on order to see if its better with high VG 80/20, may be a wasted spend as this #400 is just fine. I will also try #500 again with a looser wick, the 30g is great and holds up well when pulling wick in and out:blush:sounds a bit crude!!!

Agreed, I tried a couple variations on the solid wick (#400 & #500) and while it worked it just didn't work right for me. Seems to me, wicks/coils are as subjective as juice preferences (there's always someone who loves something - I remember someone saying they really liked the scorched hotspot flavor...). I flip-flop on Kanthal between 28awg or 30awg (bought 26awg after RW mentioned it - haven't had the courage to try ut yet...) but always go with a #500 wick wrapped around a 15ga blunt tip as wide as the wick hole.

Not sure who posted the luer Lock capped bottles but they are a big time home run! Filled up 8 15ml bottles (with 16ga blunt tips) and it is great not having to fiddle with a syringe to refill (can fill through the wick or the filler hole just as easy).

Do you have a link for these CW, can't seem to track any down here in AU.

Sure thing Burnie. Here's the bottles I got: Bottles : 15ml Luer Lock Bottle and here's the blunt tips:Bottles : Luer Lock Needles

Thing that really works out nice for me is that the 15ga I use for wick wrapping (burned the Luer Lock end off it so it's just a straight wrapping tool now) is slightly larger than these 16ga so I fill right through the wick.

I agree jhj, the solid #500 was the start of my problems:confused: but I guess we have to try these things out for ourselves.

Once you use ceramic you'll never use SS again. The Fish sticks I've been using for several weeks are awesome. No shorts, no discolored juice in your tank and super easy to dry burn when needed.

Just like SS and any other wick material, ceramic does have its draw back. The main one is its brittleness.

Rip kinda dissed on us Fish stick modders imho.

LOL, I think you're right. I think it's great that folks are being innovative and found something to use. For me, I got burnt by the fused quartz/pyrex tube fiasco and just didn't have the energy to invest in the proper tools and time to start working bubblers. Sounds lame but I'm holding out for the finished product... :2cool:

I have been shaping for years and I went all in on the "fish filters". I also will be buying the finished products. Even as efficiently as the can be made, its not worth the mess and hassle. I am fully set up to do this kind of thing and its just much easier to press the easy button and pay $2 a pc.

BTW, good evening or morning fellow Didfidites :)
