My wick preference is a tightly wrapped, thin walled wick with large center channel. As for batts, MNKE IMR 18650s all day. For the coil, my newfound favor is a 4/3 wrap of 26g, or a 3/2 of 28g. And of course, all with a standard DID and Poldiac ;)
What's your wick preference folks? Hollow thin wall or thick wall? Tightly wrapped solid? Loosely wrapped solid?

Noticed with a tightly wrapped 400 and 4/3 of 28 awg, it only works well with a fresh battery. Once it gets to about 3.8-3.9, vapor gets pretty weak. Wicking is really great, but it seems at 3.8v the batt isn't strong enough to get it going unless I press on it for a bit.

Am using new AW IMRs btw :)

For me, #500 rolled wick-hole wide with a center channel (15ga blunt tip needle with the Laur-Lok end removed). Before trying this "hot wrap (28awg - 3/4 - on 2.8mm wick - ~0.8ohm) my everyday builds were 30awg standard/Shortie 3/4(3.5mm wick) or 4/5 on Mini/Gemini(2.8mm wick) both coming in around 1.5ohm.

I think the problem with a thick, tightly wrapped wick is that there is so much metal it creates a strong heat sink. That's why when your battery gets to 3.8v it takes a while to get the vapor going. Rick's wick (hey, that rhymes) creates a more instantaneous hit due to less mesh. I use a hollow mesh with a piece of 3mm silica inside it. Less heat sink, more wicking IMO. When using ultra LR coils I don't think wicking alone gets the job done. You need that center channel that allows juice to "pour" down it when held at 45 degrees or higher.

Thanks for the info.
Its an awesome monster hitting device Jim, I am impressed. I can no longer say that my beloved Caravela is the hardest hitting all mechanical PV I own - yours is now. I dont say that lightly either. AND you have special mail

You have trumped all mechanical devices w/your silver over brass connections thus far.

This is a wick I made that hits almost instantly. It has a core of 3mm silica and is made from 635 ss mesh. I only use about 25mm of the mesh so there's very little to heat up. It's also very spongy so if you use the Petar K method of making and mounting your coil first, you just roll it a bit to make it small enough to slide into your coil and when you release it the wick expands to a perfect fit.

I was pretty insistent on building all my DIDs to be portable to my other PVs (mostly VV). So always went for a minimum of 1.2ohm or 1.3ohm. When I was cleaning/rebuilding my Gemini I realized that I haven't really used anything else besides Poldiac/Gemini since she arrived (accept some dripping sessions - I still like my Long Barrel HH.357s on my Provari). Starting to think my long term strategy may be to have a couple Poldiacs (Hy-DID-ed) and a Temon (full set) and most everything else goes to the classies or friends/relatives for starter kits...

Me to I use my Gemini. I do use my standard on the motorcycle with my 18650 ego

But 2/3 wrap 30 gauge. On both. Leave fill screw out. And remove one top nut. This way I have a spare for both and better wicking and setup for me. Wicks are 400 small hole in middle.

I ordered the Poldiac yesterday and want to know what battery would be best for it. I plan on using 18650's. Thanks for any advice.

Quite a few of us have been using the MNKE batteries that you can get at Avid Vapors and RTD Vapes. Not the longest lasting, but have very high amp limit that makes them hit strong on a mech mod like the Poldiac.

I'm digging my Ceramic wick lately. Put about 30ml through my first set-up running 32 awg K A-1 and just did a cleaning last night and went ahead and put a 5/6 wrap of 30 awg on her. So far I'm liking it. No more messing around with shorts and discolored juice in the tank.

I wish MNKE made some 18350 batts......lately I've been into small.....although I have a few 26650 MNKE for my SW when it arrives.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Based on your inputs, I've assembled a thin walled wick, thick walled, thin wall with silica in the middle and am comparing all of them now on my different DIDs... All are wrapped with 30 awg 5/4 wrap. Only difference being that 2 are standards and 1 is a short DID. All running on freshly charged 18500 mechanicals.

Head is spinning due to the nic already so will take a break for awhile :)

Plan on running 1.1 coil. I AM SOOO EXCITED!! Like a kid at christmas!!!

Don't worry about the poldiac . The smallest connection is about 16 gauge spring I think . Jim what is the spring gauge? That's 20 amps/ 80 watts continuous. Only rw will ever get there and still live.
