Hi Steve!
You're getting lots of great first hand accounts to mull over.

My story as a smoker is similar to yours in that I enjoyed smoking and yet hated many aspects of it too. I used a mall cig alike for a month while I lived in a hotel away from home caring for my Mom who was in the hospital. That wasn't enough to get me off the cigs but it did plant a seed. It was a year before I started researching and found the ecig forums and ordered some 808 gear. I had 4 batteries and didn't put any pressure on myself to not smoke. I did both for a few days until I ran out of cigs. Funny thing happened. I went into the gas station and got coffee and walked out without buying any cigs. I FORGOT to get them and didn't even realize it until I got home. Didn't have the urge to run out and buy any so I just kept vaping. A couple of days later I found one in the ashtray in the car. I came on here and started a thread asking people if I should smoke it. Kind of expected to get reprimanded for even wanting one. Didn't happen. I did get some really great comments though and surprise, surprise, I decided I just didn't really want it. Tossed it in the garbage. It's been over a year smoke free now.

I started at 18mg to 24mg and within a month or so was ready to drop it down to 12mg. I'm at 0, 4 and 6mg now and DIY about 50% of my juice. I do hope to stop vaping eventually. It would be nice to not have the expense.

My smokers cough was gone within about 3 weeks. Taste and smell came back. I put on the 20 pounds I lost when I started smoking 40 years ago. I'm OK with that since I was pretty thin. Love, love, love not dealing with the stench and ashes of smoking. :)

You've gotten some great advice in this thread. The only tip I would suggest you ignore for now is going with the genesis to start with. Leave that for when you're comfortable with vaping, have learned more about the gear and have found some juices that you like.

Best wishes for success in your quest to quit smoking!!!

I also quit smoking after my first e-cig but I bought it completely with that purpose. It wasn't always easy at first (I struggled with the cravings for traditional cigarettes). I found out later that I should have started with a higher nicotine level than the 12mg that I started with. But the good news is...I stuck with it and have been free of the 'stinkies' for over 6 months now. I still plan to quit vaping as well, but I feel that I can now do it slower, gradually lowering my nicotine levels, because I am free of alot of the harmful side effects of traditional cigarettes.

Wow! ok it is almost 11 pm here and I just finished reading all the post. I love all the info I am getting and some of it is very confusing but I will work thru this. Tonight I will sleep with visions of vaping mist in my head and analog's tossed in the trash! (see I am learning!) Gonna start applying all this info and figuring out whats items I need to purchase. I am sure I will have tons of questions coming up but tonight my eyes are stinging from all the reading! Night all and I will catch up tomorrow! And again a big THANK YOU to all that replied! I think that the people on here are a big motivational part of this journey I am about to start. Hope you all hang around so I can bug you all with my dumb questions! Like what is : clearomizers, vision spinner battery, clearos, eGo battery, drip tip, throat hits . (Just kidding. those were a few things I had to look up)

Night all

I would like to hear from some of you that have quit smoking by using ecigs and how it worked out for you. Did you quit smokes cold turkey with vaping? What mg of nicotine did you start with. what ecig did you use.

I wanted to quit smoking, but couldn't. Tried everything. Like, literally, everything. Gum, lozenges, patches, hypnosis, juggling, and about the time I got my first Provari, at the recommendation of a co-worker, I was using patches, almonds and a rubber band around my wrist that I'd snap myself with every time I wanted a smoke.

It took about 2 days for the Provari to show up, and I haven't had a cigarette since. I've had a craving here and there, but they were bearable. I don't want to sound like a vaping cheerleader, but I really quit without even trying. With some 24mg juice and my Provari, I just didn't get the "oh my God I need a cigarette now or someone is going to die" thing.

I'd been smoking for about 30 years, and was a pack-and-a-hallf to two-pack smoker when I started vaping. And, for me, it was easy. I just stopped, and started vaping instead. It was pretty seamless.

Your mileage may, of course, vary. I've seen the number 50% tossed around as the success rate for people who take up vaping to quit smoking. You'll obviously find more than that here, because the people who failed are outside smoking.

(Or do what I did and just buy new upgrades every 3 days until you find what you like.. but thats proving very expensive. :)) FWIW if you periodically work the math on how much you didn't spend on cigs, it makes it easier to justify spending money on upgrades/replacements. The first time you look at something and think "that might suit me better than what I've got.. and I already saved enough money for it" is awesome :)

I know, right?

How cool is it to look at hundred dollar device and know that not all that long ago you were burning much more than that every month? I think my husband is a little disappointed though, because he hasn't seen much of the savings yet...and I plan to keep it that way for a few more months so I can surprise him with a vacation for our anniversary.

I've been smoking at least half a pack a day, every day for the past 24 years. Granted, a lot have smoked more daily, and some for a lot more years. Still I have tried MANY times to quit in the past. All attempts had failed miserably. A few months ago i picked up a disposable e-cig for 7 bucks at a gas station just out of curiosity. I got another a couple days later and have yet to not only buy another pack of real cigarets, but most importantly not even felt the need to. I do want to make clear however that these disposables are NOT the way to go as they don't last long and are very expensive. But they DID get me off cigs for the first time and have probably saved my life.

This is the most important thing you need to know and I hope you take it with the right intent. Forget all of your other questions and concerns such as if hacking stops, trading one habit for another, etc for a second. Not to sound too blunt but they are trivial. If you don't stop smoking on your own, you will most likely die way earlier that you or your loved ones deserve. And a miserably painful and horrible death at that. I know you already know this. So why be concerned with these questions at the moment. If you haven't been able to quit by now, you owe it to yourself and everyone you love to try vaping. It worked for us, and it will most likely work for you. Personally I truly believe that vaping is the easiest and most sure fire way for anyone to quit smoking. I knew I should quit smoking. But I honestly didn't want to. I loved smoking. In all honesty I thought e-cigs were a fad, a joke, possibly even a scam. I tried it. I liked it. It still "felt" like smoking. I had no cravings It tasted better. Why buy another pack? It wasn't just a patch to help with withdrawals. You're inhaling, you get a throat hit, it feels like smoking. Just try it, cut back on or quit the cigarets, then worry about your new "habit" less the 4000 chemicals and high risk of cancer and death.

Now for a suggested setup, I have one (my setup) but instead of just telling you what it is, Baditude already has a description with pics, links to the best places to get the parts, etc. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...mber-looking-recommendations.html#post8544714

It's a really nice setup. Great for beginners as well as the advanced, and very affordable leaving you more money for trying out all the different e-juices out there. I have the 1000 mah Joytech twist and one of each of the tanks and couldn't be happier. I'd also suggest an atomizer to try out dripping as it's a good way to try new flavors easily. Also, if you get the mini vivi nova, you will have some threads showing on the twist that you can cover up by using something like this.. http://www.vaporbeast.com/product_p/a62.htm it's not needed but makes it look nicer. Other sites have them too so check whatever site you order from. This is just where I bought mine. Oh, and I forgot to add. I only have one of those twist batteries as appose to two as suggested by Baditude. But it seems to last me all day and I just charge it at night.

Ah I almost forgot, Here are two MUST reads for you to enjoy.
If for some reason you can not view the first one, it's probably because you need 5 posts to view blogs however there is aworkaround. Just view the post without being logged in and you should be able to view it. At least until you get those 5 posts in. ;p Enjoy!

I'd disagree with those, for a couple of reasons. I went through the Illustrated Guide posts while puffing on my brand-brand-brand new device and it was great for its time, it still has a lot of good info, but it is seriously outdated. A lot has changed in 4 years. I don't think it needs to be junked, but it does need a warning label or some editing. (No, I am not the guy who can do that. Look at my sig, I'm super new still.. OTOH half the devices listed as "super popular" recommendations haven't had posts in MONTHS and there are entire classes of common devices that didn't exist when it was written..)

For the handbook, it opens with "if you want to start vaping here is how you DIY liquids"... umm.. if I had to mess with that to get started I'd never have bothered trying to begin with. (I like playing with science, and I considered doing the titration nicotine-level test just for S&G, but that is a "some day" thing. A getting started guide - even one worried about "whatever they are putting in it" - should probably list reputable vendors who do lab tests and ingredients lists.. DIY is the last thing most new users need to be messing with..)

Welcome. Go for it! After 40 years heavy smoking I quit cigs 3 months back and switched to vaping. Best thing I ever did for my body, mind, family, friends. Especially.... body. Every ....... thing works better from bowels to lungs! Vaping is best treated as a new hobby... ya have to fiddle around with the gear and experiment some. For home/office try a ViVi Nova on a Vamo battery. Switch out the silica (questionable issue with glass shards shedding off these) wicks on the ViVi, to cotton. Wrapping new coils on cotton wick is a piece of cake using Kanthal 32 AWH wire. Buy low nic juices maybe 10 to 18 mg/ml, 60/40 to 40/60 PG to VG. I use 50/50. For car and boat I use Greensmoke using 12v adapter/USB passthrough. Not as good a vape but I can leave the stuff in the car/boat and forget it, its always ready to go and I can just drop it in my lap as and when needed.
GO FOR IT!

There are numerous review sites out there that give the objections of the different brands out there.

I found that this was one was helpful: http://bestelectroniccigarette101.com/
And all of those, like the one you linked to, are paid advertisements.
From now on, ignore those types of websites, and hang around here awhile.

You are now in the right place for objective information.
And we are always ready to help folks find what works for them.

I wasn't really even serious about quitting I loved smoking cigarettes and smoked between a half a pack to a pack a day. I went to our local ecig store last week and bought an ego c and some liquid 18mg. I started playing with it immediately and was hooked! I haven't smoked since and have no desire to! It's been 1 week today and the thought of smoking again is disgusting to me! I did by the vivi clearomizer a couple of days ago which I like better, more vapor! I never had an "official" last cigarette!

New person here. I am reading as many posts as possible about starting out with the ecigs; I am now trying the cig20 courtesy of a friend at work. She was a serious nicotine addict, just like I am now.

I want something that looks and feels like a real cigarette. So far, the cig20 is doing all right by me. A big heavier than I prefer, but I am smoking less real cigarettes. (I have smoked home rolled cigarettes for quite a while, since they started putting carpet glue on commercial cigarettes.)

As silly as it may sound, I want something a big classy looking, that gives me a nicotine hit that satisfied me. I am already smoking less than I did yesterday....too cool.

I am sick and tired of laying down at night and listening to myself wheeze.

Thanks to all for your advice and help.
