Wow, thanks for your quick replies.

klynnn: I'm not sold on cig form factor, though as a programmer I do spend a lot of time with a cig in my lips while both my hands are occupied on the keyboard. But I understand that the weight of any kind of battery will not allow this so it's not a big deal. What's more important is if I can carry it easily when I go out for an evening.

Talyon: I'm not entirely sure what twists/spinners are. can you link me to a resource that explains them for noobs like me?

lol just tried it with the smallest cigalike battery i have and no it's a no go, too heavy. I was more of a cig in my hand with 2 hands on keyboard type.. which meant often flipping of the keyboard to shake the accidental ashes off.

while i agree with klynnn on the link for the spinner twist combo kit. i don't quite agree with the below

510 is the only way to go. You can find suppliers just about anywhere. 808 is limiting.

yes, 501 is more common, but i have no problems getting stuff for my 808's and my 808's and my 501 ego play well together. it takes a 2$ thread adjuster and you are good to go.

I have both ... and use both... the ego(s) for home use... the 808's for out. i have a pack of prefilled and refillable cartomizers ready to go, i toss that and the 808(s) in the bag and i'm gone. If i'm heading for longer or to a friends house i'll toss in my clearomizer, but generally don't take that out. an 808 with a cart knocked of a table in a pub has not yet broken for me.. a clearomizer on an ego has for a friend.

plus i'm a bit of a "you want me to go out with just one battery? and if it dies? will i have to kill you?" so extra 808's are smaller to carry.

i haven't bought any 501 cigalikes rechargeable (like blu) but friends have... and by any testing we do and any reading i do on the net the 808's in that category are generally better.. but like everything in the e-cig world not all the 808's are the same.. a lot depends on who made the particular battery.

I'm not saying don't get the combo kit klynnn has linked to .. i'm saying get it ... but depending on your going out in the evening needs if your budget allows don't dismiss a good cigalike kit if you think that would work for you better for the occasion.

I love the Bull Smoke one i got. They are running a promo for 29$ for a 2 battery starter kit.. (most other starter kits like that are 50-70$) the batteries are 280 and 380mah so the vaping time is decent. and what i like about them unlike the other 808's i tried i get a full hit till the end, and then i just get nothing. on others i tried, half way through the charge it's like sucking concrete through a straw to get a puff.

IMO the 510 is an amazing system, because just about everything is compatible. So regardless of what battery you get, theres a great chance you can spend next to nothing on any 510 threaded clearo/atty/cart/literally anything and still be okay. At least in my experience.

I'm pretty new to e-cigs. I've smoked heavily for several years and I've grown tired of the smell and the number it does on my lungs. I'm interested in trying vaping as a replacement for cigarettes. I've done some research and lurked for a bit on this forum and this seems to be the best knowledge base available on the subject. So I have come to ask for advice as a noob.

I've tried a couple of Blu disposables and they were ok and kept me off the cigs for a few hours but they didn't last as long as I would have hoped. I'm wondering what you think would make a good starter e-cig for me. I want something that's portable and rechargeable on the go but can still provide a better throat hit than the disposables I've been trying.

I'm also hoping you all can point me to a reputable and convenient online supplier.

So far from my googling, the Blu premium 100 kit seems like a good intersection between reputable supplier and convenience (since refills are available at local gas stations) but the $90 price tag is pretty off-putting for an unknown quantity. I've noticed that Blu seems to have something of a bad reputation around here so I'm interested in your thoughts.

Two weeks later, I gave it away.

They're overpriced and mediocre. I still want to like them but I can't. They have a nice idea but poorly executed. Their shipping and customer service have no fans around here. Only time I ordered their cartos off their website, it seemed they were hand carving the things it took so long.

Also, the batteries will drive you insane. They last about five minutes but take about a month to recharge. Then I had one crap out entirely even though I had the kit all of two weeks.

They also pull this very interesting little stunt in which their disposables have a higher nicotine content than their cartomizers. Almost as if they're trying to pull people in so they can sell them endless streams of consumables. Not that I would accuse a tobacco company of such a tactic.

(Yeah, Blu is owned by a tobacco company)

So I noticed I was rapidly approaching not just spending as much on Blu as cigs but I was about to be spending more than I did on cigs. This was the proverbial "last straw".

If I could go back and start over, I'd go with something more like this: Spinner/Twist Combo. Now, you don't have to start with that exact kit nor use that exact vendor. That's just basically the kind of set up I wish I had started with and which I'm basically building now buying the parts separately.

But I didn't find ECF until after I bought Blu. Fortunately, folks around here helped me change course. I have Twist batteries and use Boge cartos and I'm much happier. And I'm not spending huge, honking loads of cash on Blu cartridge packs.

Okay, okay, I'm spending a fair chunk on e-liquids but I'm letting myself "splurge" a bit right now and sampling a lot of different ones. Still cheaper than Blu. Their cartos can't contain more than about one ml of juice, probably less, and they run $3 each retail. I can get 30 ml of my now favorite liquids for $15 so that's, what, 50 cents per ml? Verses $3? Well, cartos are costing me about $1.60 but I refill many, many times. Overall, I'm spending way, way less than when I smoked even while I'm letting myself "splurge".

But get a Twist or Spinner. The "variable voltage" thing is really nice. Much better than Blu's underpowered set up. And you can adjust the temp of the vapor to suit your tastes. And whether you get a tank like system or cartomizers or whatever, doing your own fills is cheaper and you get much, much more options on liquids. Tons and tons of options. Better than Blu's tiny collection of overpriced prefilled definitely.

I have to agree with mostly everyone on this forum. Pick yourself up an ego twist a small carto tank and clearomizer and your good to go.

Agreed I also went with Blu when I first started out, never again.

I'm getting huge clouds of vapor and the tanks and batteries last all day and then some. Thanks everyone for the pointers. This community is has been extremely helpful and friendly.

when i was smoking i was using 2. packs of camel wides. i tried the gas station specials, tried mystic(walmart). i was still smoking while using these "ecigs". when i got my hands on an ego i have not smoked since. make sure you get a good qualiy setup, need to have something you enjoy.

It's a good kit. It's the kind I wish I'd started with instead of Blah... I mean Blu. In fact, it's pretty much what I have now though I bought it parts and pieces at a time instead of a whole kit at once.
