hey guy, I’m Melissa. You can call me Mel. I worked in the industry for 5 years and have been out of it for a couple of months now.

Thought I would introduce myself. I’m 31 years old! I everyday use a smok Alien 220 with a tobecco Mini super tank with the .3 notch coil at 50 watts. Coils last me about 2 weeks each.

My mother is a smoker and LOVES the hit from my mod and tank. For her Birthday, I plan on buying her a device.

Which devices should I look at and which ones should I steer clear of? Keep in mind, it’s for a beginner. And I am FAR from a beginner. The shop I worked at catered to cloud chasers, so I’m at a loss on what I should get her.

Welcome to ECF and glad you are here, Mel.

As far as your mother, if she "loves" the hit from your setup, why not get her one like yours? Can she only vape it for a brief moment/does she find the vape overwhelming? If not, well, that IS an option.

It's great you are buying her a device. If you want something "slightly sub0hm" you could get her a Pico setup. It's inexpensive, but does have one external battery (although internal batteries were also made for earlier versions of the device) it's inexpensive and might give her a bit more "oomph" to her vape with some of the Melo III coils (depending on resistance). It's a well liked setup by many users, is small, and easy to operate.

If you want something more true "MTL" vape I might suggest an Aspire Zelos kit, you can get a 50 watt internal battery or a 75 watt TC capable zelos, and the kit comes with the Aspire Nautilus 2 tank which is a great option for starting out, fairly easy to use, and also offers a variety of coils. The draw will likely be much tighter (even with airholes open) than what you are using now. So, I guess you'd have to balance how much she likes your vape, versus if she wants something stealthier, less vape, and higher nicotine level per puff.

Best of luck, I hope you find something she will like :)

The Tobeco tank you are using would actually be an excellent choice for a beginner...coils are readily available...they are available in multiple resistances... and the tank and coils are cheap. It's literally the only tank i kept after getting rid of probably 15 other ones when i switched to mostly squonking.

As far as mods, you would know as much as us in terms of reliability and size based on your experience in the shop... most will have no problem driving most options for the tobeco... so it will come down to battery life, size, cost, color, etc...

if you know a bit about her preferences, i bet you'll find the perfect fit, or you can just take her window shopping!

Good luck on your search, and glad to have you here. I wish i could be more helpful on the device side, but i haven't shopped for a non-squonker for a couple of years, lol.

I think its great that you are hoping to convert your mother. A huge plus for you is she seems enthusiastic to quit smoking and vape. I've personally introduced vaping to my son, sister, nephew, and daughter. I also worked in a vape shop for a year.

I firmly believe a beginning vaper should use a regulated mod instead of a mechanical mod innitially. Not only because of the protection circuitry makes it a lot safer for a beginner, but being variable wattage she'll be able to change the vape "on the fly" to suit her mood or preference.

There's always the controversial question on whether a beginner should use an internal battery mod for convenience, or should use a mod that uses external batteries. Since you've worked in the trade for a number of years, you probably have thoughts on this. I'm personally a big fan of the external battery mods.

The choice in tank is probably the most important choice in gear for a beginner. It should be easy to fill and easy to replace the coils. Generally speaking, a top fill tank is easier IMHO. The tank should have an air control ring to adjust the airflow resistance. Most beginners prefer a more restrictive, MTL (mouth to lung) draw over a wide open DTL (direct to lung) draw because it is more similar to a cigarette.

The Aspire Nautilus is often frequently mentioned as an excellent first tank. MTL draw. Drawback is it uses bottom fill for both coils and juice.

I always like to suggest the original Uwell Crown tank. Highly adaptable from MTL to DTL draw. Four coil choices (0.12 TC, 0.25 SS, 0.5 SS, and 1.25 ohm SS). Easy top fill design. I made a review here: Tanks & RDA's Ratings & Explanations

You probably don't need help in helping her choose her e-liquids or what nic concentration she'll likely need.

Any other info you might find helpful is in my blog, below in my signature.

Good luck and welcome to our forum.

I got given an innokin endura t18 mtl kit, and it was close enough to smoking to help me quit. As a beginner setup it was simple and bulletproof to use - just found I was having to charge it a lot with its internal 1000 mah battery :)

If you are after something simple a pen like device is fantastic - but something with a bigger battery is probably needed once you get past the initial beginner stage. After 2 months I've just got my first external battery mod - and I'm loving the fact I only have to replace a battery, instead of plugging the whole device into a charger.

Which devices should I look at
Welcome and glad you joined. Fortunately vaping is not like smoking, the time and effort put into it is proportionately gratifying to an equal that amount of time and effort. In short, the more effort you invest, the more you get out of vaping. Getting vape gear for someone else rarely works, especially if the smoker is not motivated or indifferent. Best bet is to have the prospective vaper read:

    Welcome to ecf.

I too also recommend the Eleaf Pico. It's small, fits great in small hands and can grow with the vaper. Since you can adjust the watts to her sweet spot and the coil/tanks, both the Tobeco supertank(mini) and the UWell original Crown tank are great options for it. The Eleaf pico 25 is a better option tho for the Crown tank and it offers a bit more room for the tank to fit properly onto the mod.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

    :)

I'm going to suggest everyone follow Ethan's suggestion.. ...:lol: Then, I'm gonna suggest you all send me money :D.

But, in all seriousness, that is super sweet @Ethan diy , although I have to admit that I don't say "amen" to probably even the majority of my own suggestions to myself. LOL.
