Hey all,

I started making my own vape juice a few months ago and it's great bc I can control the nicotine and flavor. For testing recipes I bought a few old school barrel style atomizers. The flavor is great and I really enjoy using them at about 12 watts with 24mg nic

I just purchased my first rda. It's called the berkester MTL rda ( forgive my spelling) and I got it all set up and took a few Vapes from it at 15 watts. It was so harsh and the flavor was there, but not the same as my old school atomizers. I lowered the wattage but that's not enough vapor, but a super hard harsh throat hit and bland flavor. My new recipe is awesome and I really want to experience that with my new MTL RDA.

Any suggestions?

The first few hits on a rba may taste a bit off due to cotton break in, or if you didn’t heat the coil - which may have some residue from manufacturing. Also, I wash my RBAs before use. Some are kind of nasty.
I did try difediffe airflows. I'm out if Town so I'll have to mess with it when I get home. But I tried a few. I can't be descriptive on the coil since it's my first time. But it's included in Berkester MTL RDA kit.. I just want my regular flavor and it kind of muted it. I tried to set it up step by step with an instruction video on YouTube. Super easy but maybe I didn't scrape it right it position it right? Idk. It's all foreign to me at this point

Hello Kelly1988, included coil is probably a Kanthal one. 29AWG (0.28mm) SS316L may be of some interest as it seems good to use for MTL, and as it's Stainless Steel it can be used in either wattage or temperature control modes.

Muted flavour is probably due to wicking, either it's too tight or too loose. It can take a lot of trial and error to get right though, you're looking for a little bit of resistance when you basically floss the coil. But not so much that you start pulling it out of place.

Also, you could try playing around with coil placement. Need to get as much airflow directed over it as possible.

Anyway, best of luck and keep at it. You'll get it sussed eventually.

That's very informative thank you. My wick is tight and I tried to pack the cotton far in the well to hold more liquid.. I'll def try that when I get home. Thank you!

This rda comes with a fuse Clapton in the retail package.Pretty much mass coil.Up wattage and see.
Thank you!! Any pointers help so much. I really need the upgrade bc all of my old atomizers barrels run out and dripping every 3 seconds is bugging me. Hey how about the cotton? Is there a certain cittco that's better than others?

And do I need to break the cotton in for lack of better words? I only tried like 4 pulls and set it aside until I come home.

Lol, I'm out of town and all I'm thinking about is my new RDA at home..

I'm going to turn my phone off but any more tips would be great and I can check the thread in the morning! Goodnight everyone!! :toast:

The included coil is a 2x 30awg core with a 38awg wrap Ni80 fused Clapton. Not that high in mass and I predict around 13 to 18 watts should be fine.

As for cotton, personally I think that is a personal preference. Some like Rayon, some like Cotton Bacon, some like Muji. I don’t think any one of them out performs the other. So go with what you feel most comfortable with.

I really like the Berserker RDA for dripping --- I have three set up right now. I use simple round-wire coils coming in between 1.0 ohm and 0.8 ohms (I use mech/unregulated mods, and that puts me in the 15-20 watt neighborhood).

I've used N80 and kanthal, 26g, 27g, and 28g, either 2.5mm or 3mm diameter. I use the air-tube with the three little holes, and coil placement has the top of the coil slightly lower than the tops of the screws -- closer to the bottoms of the screw heads in fact (there is a u-shaped little tool with a 2.5mm rod on one side and a 3mm on the other side to assist in lowering/positioning the coils once mounted). Just make sure you still have a millimeter or two between the air-tube and the coil and always remember to remove the air-tube when dry burning, and replace it before wicking.

For wicking I use cotton -- either cotton bacon prime, or native wicks platinum these days, just enough to be snug when pulled through the coil ... trimmed even with the bottom oring and then tucked down to the bottom of the well. I also always make sure to leave a good channel alongside each wick-tail down to the bottom for dripping into (if you jam it full of cotton, when you drip it'll pool a little around the coil and then drip off the bottom of the coil into the airflow tube openings right under the coil).

Good luck.

@Punk In Drublic I think that is just another one who thinks because something works for them then it should work for everyone. I get a kick when someone claims a device or atty is the "Best". Maybe for them but not for everyone.

Or a sign of someone abusing the rating system for the purpose of trolling and or to instigate conflict. In another thread he also hit me with a red X, disagreeing that a coil going from 0.3 ohms to 3 ohms is a sign of something wrong with the build. No worries – he has been reported.

You could try rayon. I hated cotton and I love rayon. There's a whole thread on it somewhere....

Sometimes, it takes a while to get used to a new atomizer. 4 pulls (especially if you didn't break in the cotton) is hardly a fair trial.

Good luck, you'll get it going.

Ty! I'll look into it. I'm finally home so I can mess around with it some more :D
