Hello all, this is my first post although I have been poking around here for a few days. My name is Gerald, from the Raleigh,NC area and I am very pleased to find such a strong community for the e-cig user. My experience started Monday when I saw someone at work using a Blu brand e-cig. I had heard alot about e-cigs but had never seen on in action until this past monday. Needless to say, I was intrigued.

As a heavy smoker for over 20 years I immediately saw a truly viable method for ridding myself of my tobacco habit. Previous attempts had my trying Welbutrin, The patch, Chantix, and nicotine gum. The only time I had ever had any sort of sucess in quitting was with the Nicotrol inhalers since they kind of allowed me to at least simulate the habit of smoking.

So, armed with no real knowledge and a debit card I went down to this gigantic store where my co-worker bought his Blu's to try out this new cessation method. The store had three e-cig brands, Blu, Smoke-Stik, and ElitenSmoke. The salesperson pushed hard to sell me a Blu starter kit but I was wary about getting involved in something like this without really knowing the in's and out's of it all. So I opted for a Blu disposable for $8.99. I tried it the rest of the day and was really excited about the possibilities of how an e-cig can get me off traditional smokes.

So, while vaping away on my new disposable I set my sights upon the internet to learn about the different products and how this all works. As you all know, do a search on e-cigs and what you get is advertisements. So I searched on e-cig forum, and here I landed. After reading the FAQ, looking at hundreds of posts, and watching many of your video's I felt better armed to make a purchase and I now knew that those 3 brands weren't some of the best choices.

Avoiding the store I originally went to, and their product, I found a tobacco store in town that carries 510's and lots of supplies. Grabbed myself a 510, some carts, and some e-juice. Since wednesday I have been vaping and am very pleased. Went back to the same store yesterday and bought my wife a 510 of her own and now we are both heading down the road of being smoke free. So, I have to extend a sincere thank you to the creators of this forum and its many members who have already helped me without them even knowing....thank you all very much.

Looking to expand my flavor arsenal, I took some suggestions here and placed an order from MadVapes yesterday and according to the tracking #, my order of 6 new juices will be here today, so I'm pretty excited about that.

While I have spent many hours here reading and learning, I have found an issue that seems to be a bit conflicting to me and I was hoping that I could get an answer. I realize that there is tons of info here and trust me, I've sifted through a great deal of it but I just cant seem to find an answer to this "conflict" I keep running into. So please forgive if it has been addressed but I just cant seem to find an answer. Here it is.....

I often read that it is important that you don't flood your atomizer by using to much juice in your cartridges. If it floods, or if you even use to much and you hear a gurgle, you have to blow out the excess..... Yet isn't dripping the actual act of flooding your atty? How is putting drops ON you atty not flooding it? How can the method of "dripping" work so well when one of the golden rules is not allowing too much fluid onto the atty? Very confused on this point, some clarification would be appreciated.

So other than that question and truly getting an answer to which is better, atty vs carto, I'm very grateful that I could find so much great info in one place. Thanks in advance for any info and help you can pass along. I look forward to interacting with this great site and its members.

You can still flood an atty from dripping. Its a matter of knowing your atty's limitations not just in the amount of liquid you can drip on it, but how quickly it either wicks down to the coil (if you don't remove the wick) or how much the catch cup can reasonably handle. YMMV but my consistency guide is 3 drops for 510, 5 drops for LR 510, and 5 drops for LR 306. That too can be changed by the viscosity of the liquid itself. Its not flooding it necessarily by dripping, its just delivering the liquid from the top end.

As to atty versus carto, you might as well be having a Lilliput versus Florescu debate, its all a matter of what you like. I really enjoy a carto at regular resistances but can't stand them at higher resistances on a 510. However, I love a lower resistance or a higher voltage 808D cartomizer. It just comes down to a simple matter of taste. I will say though if you aren't using a juice fed system of some type, cartomizers can be very convenient.

Hi Gerald and welcome to ECF! :)

With dripping, you walk a fine line between getting enough liquid on your atty and flooding it. Just 2 to 5 drops will do it depending on the atty, with the average being 3. 3 drops, vape until the taste changes, usually somewhere around the length of time a cigarette lasts, then 3 drops again and repeat. I never even tried the carts that go with the atty, just went straight from cartos to dripping.

As to cartos, it's really the preference of the user. Some prefer cartos over the atty, some drip or use the cart with regular or modified filler, and some have started using tank type systems. My suggestion would be to try a couple of each and see which works best for you.

+1 to what Infernal said. Cartridges versus cartos.....total personal preference. You own it to yourself to try both. And I remember having the same "flooding" questions myself early on. Essentially, it's a matter of degrees. You want to keep your atty wet at all times....just not too wet. Ha. You'll get the hang of it, but if you're dripping, it just takes 2-3 drops at a time, then vape it away (5-8 puffs) and do it again. If it gurgles, unscrew it, daub it out of the battery well and blow it out (use a tissue!) and start over.

Hello and welcome...
While dripping is more of a try it to learn, may I suggest since you are already getting 510's, that you try a 510- tank atty and see if that will do it....what the tank atty is aka 510-t atty and you will need the tanks to fill, this is a much less messy way to get full vapor and flavor.....I have been using both the 510-t attys and the eGo atty t-s for over a month without any problems....ymmv. the tank systems actually wicks the juice onto the built in atty and it is much like dripping.....
Let us know if you have questions.

Glad to have you and that you found us....

More replies....thanks, didnt expect to have so many responses so quickly. Ok, I think I would like to give the drip method a try. I assume that I do this with an empty cartridge with NO filler? Or an empty cart with clean filler?

An empty cart with no filler. Many people get a "drip tip" which is just a mouthpiece with a hole in it so you can drip without having to remove anything. But an empty cart will work. Just take it off, drip 2-3 drops, put it back on and puff away until you notice a change in vapor or taste. Take it off, drip again, put it back on.....you get the drill. It can be a PITA, but it's the best way to get the full flavor of the juice. You'll learn as you go along...and will either get some drip tips, or will evolve to a juice feeder of some sort.....the changes will be never-ending (or it will seem so) for awhile until you find your perfect system. Experiment and enjoy!!

Correct. You would want to pull the filler out of the cartridge for dripping, or better yet, if you find you like dripping, many websites sell tips made especially for dripping, i.e. Drip Tips.

Thanks again for the great replies and for helping me to get a better understanding of dripping. Gave it a try and really like the stronger flavor. One of the issues my wife and I faced was "When are you finished?" With an analog, the cig burns down and out and you're done. With vaping there isnt something to really tell you that you are "done"

With dripping, it kind of simulates the amount of time (or drags) you would get from a single cig. When the flavor runs out, its just about the same time we would take smoking a regular cig. So we find that pretty useful. For longer stretches we just pop on a cart and vape away.

Thanks again!

And just FYI - dripping is not recommended with auto batteries. So if you bought auto, consider getting manuals for dripping. The Joye 510 manuals are totally sealed metal on the threaded end sot hey are very safe from damage by juice leaks. I also recommend Boge standard resistance cartomizers w/ 510 manual. And I find thin (20% Vg or less) juices, especially clearer juices with no flavoring sediment, make my Boges perform well longer. I can get 1-2 weeks+ use out of a Boge cartomizer. Slim 510 must use the standard resistance, not the LR ones.
