Newbies giving me "advice" (rant)

Ok, so we all know I'm far from a vape guru, obviously. Recently I was talking to my cousin, who's new to vaping (like January 1st new), I thought we were going to discuss our favorite equipment, juices, etc. Then she starts giving me unsolicited advice, which continues even after I tell her I've been at this for a year and a half now.
"You're using too high Nic. I vape 3mg only." - Well cuz, that's great for you. But I started with 24mg and I don't have a good enough battery to handle high performance dripping. So 10mg in my tanks is NOT "too much", it's where I'm comfortable right now. There's a big difference between subohming and using tanks+egos.
"Make sure you carry an extra battery when you're dripping." - I only drip when I'm at home, and I always carry an extra battery anyway. Anyone knows that you have backups for your backups if at all possible.
"Talk to me when you have a box mod." - Uhh, what?! I get that mods are higher powered. Really, I do. But on a limited income and supplying for two people, upgrades aren't necessary right now. My egos and tanks satisfy my needs and keep me off the stinkies. Who the hell are you to say that I'm not "really vaping" because I don't do it like you do??
Has anyone else run into this type of elitism among new vapers? How do you handle it respectfully (rather than telling them they're being jackasses)?

Maybe you need to up your nic and drink plenty of water... :D

Juuuuust kiddin'!
I know first hand how irritating that can be, my stepson, only 6 months in always has advice for me now that he has a 100W+ box...

I just let him feel important and nod a lot!
He still comes to me when he suddenly gets stumped on anything technical, of course he makes sure to give the advice right back when it suits him.

InTheShade - lol, she might be. She also bragged about a site that lets her get 11 randomly selected flavors for like $70. I was like, "That's actually not that good of a deal, for a web special." I referred her to KJ and I kinda feel like she's not actually going to check it out.
440BB - yeah, I tried telling her that, but she just got all high and mighty like "well why are you still doing it wrong if you've been at it so long?" U_U

UnclePsyko - yeah that type of thing I got from my step dad when he first started. You know, during the two months he was actually vaping, before he went back to stinkies. Now my mom is trying to convince him to give me his box mod that was used maybe 2 weeks, but he's still clinging to "But I might use it if you get me a tank that doesn't leak!" ... Bro... You buy plastic disposable clearos. They're all going to leak. Lol.

I hinted that I don't have the budget to spend what she does, like "Hopefully I'll have some new equipment when I leave" (visiting my mom out of town) but she tells me "I have no money right now" ... Well yeah, probably because you're blowing through so much juice in your expensive plethora of devices when you're just starting out.

Your post is kind of what lead me to these forums in the first place. I work the front door at bar that allows vaping inside (and out obviously), so I see a lot of different set ups and I overhear a lot of conversations between all sorts of users or non-users who are just curious about some of the crazier looking mods. Unfortunately, I've noticed a lot condescending users or people just standing by their set up and/or preference as if it's the one and only option for superior vaping. I don't even bother chiming in anymore and I mostly buy everything I need online because a lot of the shops I've been to locally just have the same kind of folks behind the counter. Most people on here so far that I've noticed are just supportive and helpful and not looking to one-up you in conversation.

By the way... She sent me a picture of her newest device, as I was replying to you guys. Like new since we talked yesterday. "And I'm sure my collection is just going to keep growing!" ... This is what makes it obvious that she's not vaping for the same reason I started (a cheaper alternative to smoking).

Reminds me of the time someone informed me that my recent skydiving excursion was not "real" because I was only 3500 feet above the earth when I stepped out of a plane.:?: I was dumbfounded. The person had never even been in a plane much less jumped out.

Go figure.

I tell them the same thing I tell people who say my truck's not fancy enough, my chainsaws aren't big enough, and my clothes aren't fashionable enough: "I don't really care what you think."

Rule #1 for me never tell someone with a chainsaw they don't have a fancy enough anything. Maybe that's just cause I'm from Texas and they made a pretty popular movie about jackin' around with dudes with them.

Funny read, RB...

I'm going to approach this from a different perspective - if I may.

Like any enthusiast pass time - particularly one with a decided technical bent - there are those who know, and those who "think" they know. I suspect the goal of your cousin is to demonstrate to you how clever she is... sharing the total extent of her limited "knowledge".

In other words, she respects you... perhaps even looks up to you as a life-model, and seeks your approval, appreciation and validation of her vaping credentials.

I might offer a few remedies that would silence her... but all that come quick to mind, have a somewhat vindictive air to them, and might not be appropriate, if my impression of her actions are accurate. ;-)

Cheers!

back in grad school, i lived in a ice rink. pair of hockey skate and open ice with no one around.. one day i was done with my thing and was walking out. took my red and zippo out and was about to lit one. this high school girl looked at me and said "you know that's not good for you". i told her, "i know, but i have a car and you are waiting for your mom to pick you up."
