Hey, I'm pushing 50, but I don't feel like an old fart yet. Might as well toss my oar in too.
An excess of blinkin' flashy animated gizmerated cruft is a distraction. IOW, I agree with the "fairground" characterization. I'm tryin' to
read here, dangnabbit! A few here and there is one thing, but trying to read a
thread liberally sprinkled with nodding, flaming, rolling, winking smileys, as well as flashing avatars and sig images is bordering on painful.
FWIW, I'm on a 7Mb DSL connection -- don't have any trouble with download speeds. For the most part, an animated GIF is usually not going to be a bandwidth hog anyway, and most browsers will cache the image anyway, so it should download only once every some number of weeks. My sympathy to anyone on dialup.
There is help though. I have no idea how to do this if you're running a browser other than Firefox (or Mozilla, or any other browser using the Gecko rendering engine). Enter
about:config in the location bar text box. Enter
anim in the filter text box. Double click on
image.animation_mode and enter
once or
none in the dialog box. It's what I do. Some minor drawbacks, such as

looks like somebody with lip plate wearing headphones. But the benefits outweigh these, IMNSHO.
No idea whether it's an issue, but anytime I see something flashing at a high rate, I wonder about epileptic seizures. I recall reading about seizures being induced by driving past a picket fence at just the right (wrong?) speed, especially if the fence is backlit. I used to know someone who couldn't drive for that reason.

Other than that, nice little flame war.
Also, yeah ...
like the fist of an angry God!
