I have not smoked a real cigarette in 4 1/2 years. However, I started vaping two weeks ago.

I quit smoking after watching my father suffer and die from lung cancer. He was just 49 years old. I did not want my son to go through that so I put the habit down. However, I was someone that loved smoking. It was something that I enjoyed and something that helped me. I suffer from ADHD and sometimes depression. So, smoking was really something that would help calm my nerves and allow me to focus better.

So when I quit I really started feeling the effects of the ADHD and it seemed like my bouts of depression were coming more frequently. Plus, I gained over 100 pounds.

So, even though the urge to smoke and the addiction to nicotine had passed I still always thought about picking up the habit again. The only thing that stopped me was the vision of my father.

You see, as my father's last days approached he was in the hospital. He had a tube in his stomach and a tube in his chest. However, my father was a very prideful man. So he insisted on using the bathroom itself. However, because of his weakness and all the tubes he could not get up out of bed to go so he used a portable urinal.

My mom and I would have to take turns staying in the hospital. The reason being is in the middle of the night he would try to get up and go to the bathroom. When he would try to get up he would instantly fall because he was so weak.

I would then have to pick him up like a child and put him back down in the bed. It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had in my life. So, to me smoking was not an option.

However, my life was spiraling out of control. My ADHD was overwhelming and it seemed like I was in a constant state of depression.

That's when I started researching electronic cigarettes. I started researching them about six months ago. I would read about it and try to see if they were a safer alternative. I would then read a little bit more about them and consider it a little more. And I kept researching until I finally decided that electronic cigarettes are a better alternative.

No one can say that they are safe, but from what I have found no one can say they are unsafe. So here I am.

Now, I can tell you that they have had adverse effects on me. I am shorter of breath now. It also makes my eyes and sinuses dehydrated.

However, it is nothing that I cannot live with.

So, here I am.... An ex-smoker who picked up the habit of vaping. And I'm very happy that I did. My moods are better and I am focusing a lot better.

People do not realize the amazing effects nicotine has for people with ADHD. It is a great way to calm your mind in my opinion. So, I feel very fortunate that this technology was invented and I pray that it truly is a safer alternative.

You described what I believe is the MAIN reason folks open themselves to 'the addiction'...attempting to raise themselves above that mental cloud of depression. That's what hooked me, because smoking lifted my spirits. Yet, I'm sure I've paid a price for it. I smoked for 32+ years...couldn't stop - tried everything - couldn't control the urge to smoke, because I liked smoking better than being depressed.

Since finally getting good HARDWARE, and finding juice I like (and prefer over analogs), I'm a 100% vaper...and am experiencing what appears to be the same beneficial affects of NOT smoking! :D (Unfortunately, I have gained about 30 lbs...food tastes better than ever!) Also, in the last 7 months, my nic levels have dropped from 24mg to somewhere between 6mg and 12 mg (sometimes ZERO nic). Small amounts of nic keep my spirit higher, and my concentration is clearer.

I was never diagnosed as ADD or ADHD, because they didn't have such tests when I was younger...but I probably would have been diagnosed as such.

Like you, my dad passed from lung cancer in 2007. Hospital scene was much as you described...worst days of my life (and his).

You MUST DRINK PLENTY OF WATER when vaping. Don't forget...UP YOUR WATER INTAKE! PG and VG are humectants, and the visible vapor you exhale comes primarily from the water in your body...replenish regularly!

Wishing you the BEST OF LUCK! Stay connected to ECF!

WELCOME!!! :)

Congrats on kicking the smoking habit and thanks for the welcome. the funny thing is a lot of people will say that depression medication is better than nicotine.

However, anyone that has ever been on depression medication knows that is not a true statement. It turns you into a zombie and you are not yourself. So for me, like you said, this is a better way to lift my spirits above that fog of depression.

My situation was not anywhere near yours, but I promised my son 2 years ago that I would quit analogs and I did on his birthday. Over the past 2 years I did occasionally cheat. One analog bummed from a friend here or there, nothing too bad. But I honestly just missed smoking.

In the past 6 months I started 'cheating' more regularly (one analog a day). I knew I was headed in a bad direction but also couldn't go back on my promise to my son. So I tried the disposable e-cigs you get at the drug store.

BAM, I had something that fully fulfilled my desire and I could honestly tell my son that it was not as harmful as the real thing. I then found ECF and moved up to a real PV. I've been a happy camper ever since.

I'm glad you chose vaping over smoking, and welcome to the forum. I hope you are using a low nic level, sorry had to say it, I think that's the Mom in me speaking.

I for one would also chose nic over anti depression meds.

I am using a low nic level 6mg and it is working great for me. However, I can go a little overboard with the chain vaping though :)

Glad you were able to keep that promise to your son. The funny thing is my mom quit as a promise to me then I picked up the habit when I was 16. Smoked until I was 27. Quit for 4 1/2 years and Now I AM A VAPER!

Good show on not goin' with th' analogs.
I quit 'em a couple of years ago, and found a PV that did well for me. was vaping exclusively for about 2 years.
Then wound up with a batch of bad batts, and it seemed that i couldn't get a batt that would hold up.
Coupled with various other reasons, so I went back to analogs. After about 6 months back on the analogs.
I found that I couldn't breath as well as before, (felt congested all the time). So I ordered up another set of batts and some cartos. I'm back, and feeling better.
