(Let me preface this post with the idea that I'm just doing a random thinking exercise here... although I really think the prediction I make will come true.)
Interesting discussion... and it's one that's only going to get more complex as time goes on. I had a non-smoking friend visit and, after watching me vape, she asked if take a toot. She's a grown-up, so sure. She liked it and after a few more toots, thought about getting a little e-cig just for an occasional vape... sort of like the way she occasionally chews gum. I didn't really know what to say to her. She still doesn't know if she's going to buy one of her own or not... she still toots mine occasionally.
I'm trying to write an article about a subject I think we're going to have to deal with in the future... I think there will come a day when vaping will become a fad among non-smokers. Why? Because like smoking tobacco (cigs, pipes, cigars), it's fun in own kind of way. If a celebrity comes out on TV and talks up e-cigs because they helped him or her quit smoking, that's one thing. But you know there's going to come a day when a celeb says, "I never smoked, but I've found vaping is kind of relaxing at times." Or, "It reduces my urge to snack." Or, just, "it's fun." And it doesn't have to be a celebrity... it can be a college student, who passes the idea on to friends, who pass on the idea to their friends, etc. Most likely, it'll be a combination of things, but I honestly think there will be a day when vaping is going to get very popular. You guys know how things work...
If it turns out that the health effects of vaping are on a par with, say coffee... is there really anything wrong with that?
It may be a temporary fad, or we may may return to the days when it seemed almost everybody smoked (except now we'll be vaping).
I'm having a very hard time writing the article. The bottom line, though, is this: should we treat e-cigs as our last, best hope of eliminating recreational inhaling, ultimately leading to the end of e-cigs themselves? Or, is it possible that we'll have to accept that people like to inhale stuff for a lot of reasons -- and they've been at it for centuries almost everywhere in the world -- and if they can do it safely, they may very well add it to their coffee and beer and chewing gum, etc.?
I know this post doesn't make a lot of sense, but I think non-smokers taking up vaping is going to be a big issue and probably fairly soon.
