^^Freaky, I think it depends on the nonsmoker. vaping is the only thing that has ever let me function halfway similarly to a normal, healthy, sound-minded human being. I've been able to go completely off some medicines thanks to vaping. So, yes, I might not understand the physiological need to vape that smokers have, but I would be pretty devastated at this point to lose the only thing that's ever helped me function.

how did you come to this conclusion ?
THis is REALLY interesting to me

I was actually called a troll as soon as I joined and posted my intro, mainly because I was a nonsmoker... luckily people were mostly nice after I clarified, but I am curious if there was some strange rash of trolls coming here and saying things to rile people up! Does this happen a lot, or are smokers-turned-vapors just more suspicious of nonsmokers? Hmm...

I remember your first post. I think you hit the nail on the head. There was actually a rash of "troll" threads started in the days and weeks proceeding your post. They tens to post a "hot button" issue and get everyone riled up. I actually remember thinking that you were probably a troll after reading your first post. I, however, was willing to wait for more details before condemning you. (to be honest, I actually thought your first post "appeared" more troll-like than most that have turned out to be trolls, lol - live and learn. ;))

The whole non-smoking person turned vaper is absolutely a big issue for the community. The forces aligned against us would love to be able to point to evidence that e-cigs are marketed directly at children and are designed to entice non-smokers to become addicted to (evil)nicotine. They already make these claims in ban hearings around the country. despite the fact they have no evidence.

I, and I believe others, have concerns that ECF users helping non-smokers learn about vaping could later be construed as a tobacco advocacy group(ECF) promoting e-cig use by non-smokers and their resultant nicotine addiction. I believe that this could be detrimental to the e-cig cause as a whole and ECF.

I personally believe the powers that be should come up with some guidelines as how it should be handled. Whether it is to help non-smokers, not help or that we can do whatever we want and they do not involve themselves in content decisions - although that will only protect them to a point.

Gmoney,

As I see it, the problem with being sensitive about the various "anti smoking groups" using non-smokers' vaping against E-cigs is that it doesn't matter if you are on guard or not, they are going to find SOMETHING (however ridiculous) to use against E-cigs.

Plus there's always WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN to fall back on.

Its kind of a losing battle, no matter what you do.

Really, I think the biggest problem with E-Cigs is their name (this was pointed out in another thread recently)! Just having the word "cigarette" in the name is enough to set some people off. Doesn't really matter how beneficial it is, or harmless, or whatever. Let's face it, the E-cig community has to battle against a whole anti-smoking industry and its definitely an uphill battle.

Also, the fact that some E-cigs are made to look like cigarettes is another strike against them. That's why I like the way the industry is going with the eGo and such, since they look much less like cigarettes.

Distancing E-Cigs from analogs as much as possible in the public perception is the best thing the community can do to promote them, IMHO.

A few weeks back, a 16 or so year old kid posted a vaping video. Wow did that get a lot of people bent out of shape and up in arms here on ECF.... Had anyone bothered to actually watch the video, they would have discovered a couple of things. 1) The kid was odd... probable mental issues. 2) The kid had been smoking for three or four years and wanted to quit. But instead of considering things like that, ECF-ers went in droves to flame the kid on youtube and complain to youtube about his content.

A week or so later, there was one of those "There's e-cigs on Ebay!" sorts of posts. That thread generated a few upset individuals and it was only about 4 days later I saw that sellers account get suspended (was watching his auctions out of curiosity).

There are plenty of people right here on ECF that are just as bad as the people trying to ban e-cigs. There are lots of people no matter where you go that think that what you do is their business and that they know better than you do how to live your life.

Someone getting upset because a non-tobacco-user likes to vape and calling names or trying to call in to question someone's integrity because they somehow don't agree with their behavior... Well, I wonder of those folks will ever take a look in the mirror when they are feeling repressed or persecuted about something.

Vape on. If you like it - do it. it's no one's business but your own why you do it.

I'm in a research-related field, so when no meds were working right for me I did a LOT of research about alternatives for the problems I was having. A friend I mentioned all of this to said that smoking helped her with some of the same problems so I did some research on nicotine and found that several studies proved its safety and efficacy over pharmaceutical alternatives. I borrowed a smoking friend's Njoy and the rest is history so far. :)

stillalive,

There seems to be a lot of interesting research (and anecdotal evidence) indicating significant benefits to brain related disorders from nicotine. I've seen stuff on the ECF about ADHD, OCD, Parkinsons, Schizophrenia, and lots of others. I think up until now nicotine has been available in rather a useless delivery method (gum, inhalers, patches), or in a VERBOTEN delivery method (analogs).

I really think there's going to be some fascinating research to be done on the combination of nicotine with a better delivery method (PVs). I certainly look forward to it in the future.

The reason I mention this is ECF members might find more and more that E-cigs are going to be used by people that are non-smokers, not to quit smoking, but to ease the symptoms of some disorder they're suffering from.

I just hope the members of this forum keep an open mind about it. Stuff like that may just end up being the "Killer App" for E-cigs.

(Let me preface this post with the idea that I'm just doing a random thinking exercise here... although I really think the prediction I make will come true.)

Interesting discussion... and it's one that's only going to get more complex as time goes on. I had a non-smoking friend visit and, after watching me vape, she asked if take a toot. She's a grown-up, so sure. She liked it and after a few more toots, thought about getting a little e-cig just for an occasional vape... sort of like the way she occasionally chews gum. I didn't really know what to say to her. She still doesn't know if she's going to buy one of her own or not... she still toots mine occasionally.

I'm trying to write an article about a subject I think we're going to have to deal with in the future... I think there will come a day when vaping will become a fad among non-smokers. Why? Because like smoking tobacco (cigs, pipes, cigars), it's fun in own kind of way. If a celebrity comes out on TV and talks up e-cigs because they helped him or her quit smoking, that's one thing. But you know there's going to come a day when a celeb says, "I never smoked, but I've found vaping is kind of relaxing at times." Or, "It reduces my urge to snack." Or, just, "it's fun." And it doesn't have to be a celebrity... it can be a college student, who passes the idea on to friends, who pass on the idea to their friends, etc. Most likely, it'll be a combination of things, but I honestly think there will be a day when vaping is going to get very popular. You guys know how things work...

If it turns out that the health effects of vaping are on a par with, say coffee... is there really anything wrong with that?

It may be a temporary fad, or we may may return to the days when it seemed almost everybody smoked (except now we'll be vaping).

I'm having a very hard time writing the article. The bottom line, though, is this: should we treat e-cigs as our last, best hope of eliminating recreational inhaling, ultimately leading to the end of e-cigs themselves? Or, is it possible that we'll have to accept that people like to inhale stuff for a lot of reasons -- and they've been at it for centuries almost everywhere in the world -- and if they can do it safely, they may very well add it to their coffee and beer and chewing gum, etc.?

I know this post doesn't make a lot of sense, but I think non-smokers taking up vaping is going to be a big issue and probably fairly soon.

I think that because this thread made it to 52 posts (so far) on the subject of whether or not you are a troll proves that you are whether you intend to be one or not.

I am kind of tired of seeing dr evil all over my threads.

Just in case this has already been highlighted this thread was too long so I didnt read it.

I'll make one more post here on the topic because it's really straying, although we have discussed reasons why non-smokers may choose vaping. I'll probably start a new thread in the course of time.

Consider something like a Weight Watchers meeting. People are sharing tips on how to lose weight... and one person who's having great success says, "I found this thing called a PV. When I feel like eating cheesecake, I'm able to inhale the flavor with zero calories and zero nicotine and it satisfies my urge. And if I want a Snicker, I vape Snicker flavor. It satisfies not only my urge for the flavor, I get the whole hand-to-mouth like lifting a fork to my mouth."

You know almost everyone in that room is going to try vaping. Is that a bad thing?

I think that most of us are ex-smokers who are very worried that e-cigs will be banned, so having non-smokers taking up vaping, even at zero nicotine, get us very twitchy as this might give another stick to the authorities to beat us with.

That wouldn't be my reason for thinking you were a troll.
Since I don't have a problem with non-smokers taking up vaping whether it be 0 nic or 24mg.
I feel like it their business if non-smokers want to vape and can't see why it would be a reason for the "authorities" to have anything to complain about, and I never thought you were a troll that I can remember. :)
In regards to TNT's post; No I don't think that's a bad thing, they are adults.

I don't think non-smokers wanting to vape are trolls by any means unless they actually troll. But I will discourage them as much as I would someone wanting to begin smoking. I refuse to offer them assistance as I would not buy cigarettes or lighters or even make brand recommendations to someone wanting to smoke. Once you are a vaper there is nothing I can do to prevent it and I will try to help if I can, though I will still recommend giving it up before it becomes an addiction.

this makes perfect sense to me...not the troll part all your posts that i have had the pleasure to read seem valid to me....but the not smoking then vaping....i have had several friends throughout the years that have stated "i would smoke every day if i knew i wouldn't get cancer" i bet i have talked to some of those friends on ecf and don't even know it...but this is why it makes perfect sense to me it is a safer alternative for people who would smoke if it was safe and there are alot of you guys out there from my expirence.....As far as asking for assistance and info as long as you are an adult i believe you have the right to do whatever small, within the rites of everyone around you of course, vice you wish to chose....I know when people snub me when i ask a valid question it just makes me want to try it even more cuz im like...must be good they want to keep it all to themselves like that...maybe im just crazy like that though...lmao

This begs one question: I know people who insist on saying I didn't quit smoking, because I use a PV. Does this mean that the OP is now a smoker, in their eyes?

Well 1st you did quit smoking you just didn't quit nicotine...unless you're vaping zero nic. Now I'm not sure how you'd term it then. In answer to your question to me they're a vaper.
