100 threads about something similar, I know, but I thought I'd share.

I know I'm not the only one with this issue. Every time I take a hit from my e-squizz around somebody who doesn't vape, the first thing I hear is negativity. It could be inside, outside, over here, over there, no matter what people LOVE to be offended by my vaping. This is especially true for many of the people I know who smoke cigarettes still.

We all know that this is generally from a lack of education on the subject, but I assumed people would be more supportive of the fact I'm not smoking anymore. Every time I hear "You know those things are worse than cigarettes, right?" or "I heard those things will explode and kill you" or even "Cigarettes aren't even that bad for you" I think of one of my favorite quotes:

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it has been accepted as self-evident."

Assuming Vapocalype doesn't ruin this for us, do you think vaping will reach step three for the general public? It's gonna be a long road in my opinion, but we're making progress every day.

Edit: why did I post this in New Members?

Stop caring about what other people think, this has to be one of the top five rules of vaping.

I've had people criticize me then got them to start vaping the next week, people are curious and cautious but if you present the "hobby" correctly, it's mostly positive. If they continue to be jerks then they aren't worth my time.

Yarp. Same thing from my roommate... "You know those aren't regulated right? You're putting a bunch of crap you don't know about into your body." I've tried to explain to him about PG/VG, and that we generally know exactly what's going into our juices. Granted we don't know 100% what goes into them, and have to take it on good faith that the manufacturer's are putting in exactly what they say they are.

I just know I feel a million times better since I quit a week ago, and I'm having a blast with vaping, so I'm so glad I got into it... I just wish I could stop catching a hard time about it from my roomies. They don't understand the hobby part of it either, so I'm hoping with time, I can convince them to accept it, and maybe even start vaping themselves.

I also think we're making progress. Hang in there and don't worry too much about other people. Some can be helped along and some can't, like with everything else :thumb:

I could care less what people say, so far only had positive remarks. Funny one day I am walking downtown and a cop drove by and kept staring at me while I vaped my vamo, I was hoping he would stop me, but the stare he gave me for like 5 seconds like I was doin something illegal. I looked at him and he kept goin.

I've come across analog smokers who have bad things to say about e-cigs. I was able to shed the light when I had them try my 24mg juice. Many analog smokers who are uneducated about e-cigs don't know that nicotine was ever an option to begin with - either that or they just never tried. Then of course there are the haters who will just be haters because..

At work is usually the worst for me. It's usually the same person too. "Yeah you quit smoking cigarettes but now you are smoking that, and that's not any better for you." No matter how many times I try to convince him, he still goes on his rant. But I'm not gonna quit throwing facts, and evidence at him till he breaks. Due in part to my education and help about vaping, I've helped my partner at work quit smoking completely. If I can spread the word and change one person's life for the better, I will never stop trying to change a whole bunch more. I feel it's my obligation to educate people.

All the vapers should always take the time to answer those questions and looks with real, factual information. I even carry a couple of extra drip tips with me so in case I offer someone a vape, I will be prepared.

I love that. I'm the same way. I try not to be the annoying missionary of vaping, but I've helped convert a decent handful of smokers into vapers. Knowing how much you've really helped somebody is a great feeling.

I got my mom her first e-cig this Christmas and I can't tell you how happy I was seeing her running around the house all day with it glued to her hand. When she told me earlier last night that she hadn't smoked a single cigarette all day I could have cried tears of joy. Especially because she's so damn hard headed a lot of the time (I get it from her) :D

I've encountered a lot of this too, in the last month. Most comes from either current or ex smokers (the worst!). I've found non smokers fairly indifferent towards them.

My mum and dad are staunch "haters" of smoking but they don't mind the e-cig one bit, they can't smell anything and luckily common sense has prevailed with them - "can't be any worse than smoking".

I've noticed the most hate from smokers I work with. I read somewhere that smokers have some kind of understanding and a common bond, vaping is cheating on that bond and we are resented because of it. No idea the reasons for it personally, but they cling on to common opinions that vaping is somehow worse for you, is a waste of time, it's dangerous, as they continue to smoke over four thousand chemicals and spend a fortune.

I honestly believe there is simply no talking to some of them, I'm working on converting the rest. Also helps to ignore the haters, let them get on with it.

That is a really interesting take on it... I definitely know there was that unspoken bond with other smokers; can't remember how many times I struck up a conversation with someone just because they needed a light, or because we were the only ones outside smoking. I definitely notice that e-cigs pique the curiosity of a lot of people too, though, and have had a lot of people ask about it.

I personally dont understand why most of you try to fight and argue with others. Weather its healthier or not its their choice of life and some people just dont care if they die 10 years younger and trying to prove them something, doesnt it make your life harder. Id say just blow vape in their face and ignore them you might convince or convert a few people there and there into vaping but lets face it if youre trying to save the world id say you wrong. Just my opinion... theres allways going to be people bragging and complaining and saying things just let them be.

Methinks he doth protest too loudly :)
It's not that he believes what he's telling you, it's that he's doing his best to convince himself.

On the flip side, we know a whole lot about all of the chemicals that are in cigarettes, and we know exactly what THEY do to use in the long term. List of additives in cigarettes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You could print that out for them, but be warned, you will need several sheets of paper. lol

Most smokers I've spoken to in NYC have tried Blu. Those are in every pharmacy and supermarket, right next to the cigarettes. When pack of smokes are $14 and a reusable, rechargeable option is just a couple bucks more, right there, a lot of people have gone for it. This, sometimes, leads to it being harder for me to convince them to try again. Some have approached me and flat out asked if my rig was better then Blu because they already decided to try something better. Other were turned off to vaping completely, and instead of researching better rigs, researched all the media hype that has people convinced that vaping is one of the four horsemen of the apocolypse. Once I convince one to try my rig however, I know I have them. It's actually surprising how many smokers will try it, even while they are in the middle of a rant about how bad it is. They know damn well the hype doesn't make sense. They are repeating it to convince themselves it's true because they didn't take to vaping with Blu. I could offer a drag while a smoker is in mid sentence, and they'll try it and often choke on the amount of vapor they get. I crank the watts up on them. Next thing I know, they're writing down all the websites I get my gear from. So much for vaping being evil.
