Not exactly the same situation as you, but one similarity is that I also got into vaping without looking to quit anything else. I also am not a cigarette smoker, but I am a longtime pipe smoker. I do not desire or intend to quit smoking a pipe. vaping for me is a way to (1) reduce the amount I smoke and (2) simulate the pleasureable experience of smoking in places I can't or choose not to smoke. I also use snus for the same purpose and intend to keep using that as well. (Long story short: A few years ago I tried both snus and vaping to reduce my pipe smoking. Stuck with snus but abandoned vaping at the time, being disappointed with what was available back then. With snus, I drastically reduced my pipe smoking by at least half. Just recently started adding vaping back to the mix since it appears the tech and market have advanced.)

Had vaping been around back in the day when I first picked up the pipe habit, I could see myself having started there in the first place. I'm not saying vaping is a "good" habit to pick up; but there are a lot worse ones out there. So welcome to the club.

Hello and welcome!

I, like others here, can't understand why someone would start vaping (with nic, anyway) after never having a cigarette but it's the same as I can't really understand why someone would start smoking cigarettes. I'm fairly young but started smoking 15 years ago and honestly, I can't understand why I did then. I'm sure a lot of (ex) smokers, if asked to look back, can't understand why they started. Peer pressure for younger people, work or social stresses for others etc sure, but when you add up the money, the health issues, the stress that smoking brings itself, it's hard to understand why someone would make that choice. But we, and many others, did. And still do. It's all being informed, or choosing to ignore it.

In short, welcome to vaping and congratulations on picking up the obviously better way of using nicotine!

I still would recommend against it. It's harm reduction from smoking tobacco cigarette. It's not harm-free. Nobody knows the long term effect of vaping.

It is impossible to be completely harm-free from any type of inhalation these days. From perfumes, to air fresheners, to vehicle exhaust to even the scent of food, we are constantly surrounded by scents of which we do not fully know the chemical composition and whether it is safe for inhalation. Can you say that every scent you have ever smelled is safe, even if it is not smoke and you believed it to be clean just because it did not make you cough or sneeze? Probably not and I would not tell you to stop breathing for harm reduction. I have lived in So Cal too for much of my life and drive in abominable traffic and daunting pollution. I can spend up to 3 hours driving through downtown LA behind big-rigs on a typical drive to work. I care for patients placed in airborne and droplet isolation precautions for a variety of pulmonary infections. If someone tells me to stop vaping 0 nicotine because of the risks, it is almost laughable.
