Hey Jerry, i've got a couple questions for you if you don't mind.

I've been studying for my license and am ready for Technician and General. I have been having a bit more trouble with the Amateur Extra material and wondered if it was really worth it. I'm not planning any home based antenna farm (sorry about yours) or any DX'ing. I'm starting to look into software based radios to take advantage of internet relays but don't know for sure if that is a viable path. I'm expecting to hang with the Dual band handheld at least for a bit.
I don't mind the questions, Oly, I welcome anything to get away from e-cig talk. LOL

When I got my license, there were six license classes, not just the 3 that there are now. I have an Advanced Class license, which is just below Amateur Extra. For me, the difference in privileges, was minute and not worth getting the Extra license. In my day, the difference between General Class and Extra Class was large. If it's still the same, I would say go for the Extra, especially now that the CW (Morse Code) requirement has been eliminated.

However, you would only benefit from the top license class, if you plan on operating on HF. From what you have said, you plan on staying on VHF/UHF. In that case, the Technician license is all that you will need, for full operating privileges, plus you will have limited access to the 10 meter HF band.

I really can't help you with internet connections, I never did that. I only used the internet, to look up callsigns and to download software for my 10-10 International contacts. You are probably not familiar with the 10-10 International, it's basically a worldwide 10 meter group, that's designed to promote activity on the 10 meter band.

If you are planning to join the ARRL and work towards awards, be aware that radio/internet contacts are not valid for any of their awards. Or at least they were not valid, when I was active. Maybe things have changed, I never expected the FCC to trim down the license classes and eliminate the CW requirement.

Wicking....Lately on the K Funs I've gone away from laying wick across the deck...That worked great with the Green Wick and the Peaches...Now I trim the cotton so it touches the deck....Then as I juice it to stick it I kinda spread it evenly over the deck....My thinking was a shorter path too the coil....Working great so far....The Goblin emptied the first tank with no sign of going dry....Other than a painful build it's a great tank...Even with the air cut too 1/2 it still chucks the vapor...Wanting a solid performer that was single coil so it would be ProVari friendly last night I ordered an ELeaf Lemo Black Drop tank...The K Fun killer???/ We'll see about that...

Another thing I find that changes the whole game with coils....The coil must be 100% in the path of the air...Height to the hole also changes everything....On the K Fun I run the botton of the coils just a shade lower than the top of the screws....I set the coil on the airhole and after tight I raise it with a mandrel stuck inside the coil..Then I play out height, centered over the air hole and level too the deck...When I get it where I want it I give it hell with the heat cool cycles...Tempers the coil in position and oxidizes as well...If it's a contact micro coil oxidizing will help bridge the gaps between coils...tempering keeps it where you left it...I hit it about five times without making it glow and slowly increase the glow time until I feel it's about the same as a long drag...Let it cool between pulses...then let it cool really good and wick....

Haha Dee, you are a perfectionist...I admire your dedication! If it's any harder than sticking a coil on there, and stuffing it with wick, I'm outa the game ;) (Didn't I say that about carto tanks too?)

One caution I learned in some of the vids I've watched about rebuilding the premade KSM heads...don't dry burn the coil! You'll fry the rubber insulator grommet on the bottom! Some folks like the function of rebuilding the pre made coil heads better than the RBA that came with it. But that also means you can't test it before you juice it up.

Morning ladies and gents :)

We have a Sally Beauty Supply next to the grocery store, I may stop in there and pick up a small package of the rayon that Phil uses in his video. I still haven't tried the RBA on the KSM, so I'm still a coil virgin ;)

I got a piece from my hairdresser. just never used it. You may want to give that a shot. Still waiting on my Japanese Organic cotton to get here. Should be in the next week or so though.

LOL ......... well, I guess that would have a LOT to do with it!

I'm lucky if I know what month it is!!!

I hear you. I am right there with you most of the time. ;)

I was looking at the possibility of taking all 3 test at the same time and even if i don't use the HF right now i'll probably try for the extra (if they let me). I have a few things that i put money into already and the handhelds are inexpensive and don't require antennas so that is the first plan. Also since the licenses are for 10 years a lot could happen before it expires. I can't seem to stop trying new hobbies.

I've rebuilt one OCC head 3 times so far. After I rewick it I make sure the coils look good and test it with my ohm meter.
