I think the problem is the plastic bottles taking up space in landfills. I work in west monroe, la. At least twice a year I get postcards in the mail saying that there were problems with the water system, and that something was wrong with the water. They always point out that the problem was corrected, and that I would have had to drink a million gallons for it to cause cancer.......

Forgive me if I don't feel safe drinking the water there. Most days I don't even want to pee in that disgusting water.

My point is that I will take my chances with bottled water.

High Time!! Biggest RipOff market in the whole world, open to the biggest and worst deceptions immaginable. Billions and billions in profits for over 200 suppliers world wide. Only two put ingredient lists and cartoning info on label. For all the good it does.
Where did your water come from. The spigot behind the gas station?? What kind of bottle is it in. Does it give off polycarbonates or not? (Keep it out of the sun) Do you know for sure? NO
Is your water filtered, for what? You don't Know?? NO
This is one of the We gotta do something NOW kind of things, unless we can get out of it somehow......

When we built our house we put in a reverse osmosis system, the same thing these bottling companies use to purify their water. I do not trust our local water as we get a radon warning with every bill, we are higher than the allowed limits. Using the RO system, I get bottled water at home and the unit paid for itself in less than a year (we have had it for 10 yrs). I will admit that I do buy bottled water, but only about once every 3-4 months to get a fresh stock of bottles to refill (I prefer my water refrigerated).

So, there are ways to enjoy your own tap water. :) You can even get less expensive faucet filters or water pitchers that filter. I agree that the bottles are not good for the environment, but I also agree that our water stinks, at least I know ours does.

As for regulating the bottled water, I personally think it's pretty ridiculous. They comment on how regulations for tap water do not apply to bottled water, but if most companies are using tap water for bottling, don't they then meet the tap water regulations before they bottle it? I suppose they could be using sewer water, but I'm truly doubting that is the case. 8-o

When it comes down to it, bottled water is a ridiculous idea. Why anyone would feel the desire to pick up at the store for a couple dollars a bottle instead of getting it for FREE from YOUR OWN HOME is ludicrous.

Not to mention that carting tons of the crap all around the world is just putting more crap in our air.
Where do you get water when out working? I can't find the sink in my work van.

You know, when I saw this article too, I noticed some striking similarities in their reasoning here and against e-cigs:

The researchers urged Americans to make bottled water "a distant second choice" to filtered tap water because there isn't enough information about bottled water.

That seems a good enough reason to get anything targeted these days... I think it took until 2005 for a good understanding of the mechanism of aspirin's pain and inflammation relief. But I guess not knowing how aspirin even worked wasn't a problem for so many years.

The best part was the next sentence:
The working group recommends purifying tap water with a commercial filter, however.
So we might not have enough info on bottled water but we sure as hell know enough about tap water to realize you need to filter it before drinking it.

Tap water gives me stomach aches and bottled water doesn't - that's all I need to know.

There's a difference between water regulation and nicotine regulation. We don't have anti water groups saying that drinking bottled water will entice children to drink sewer water.

I don't think many here would really object to labeling Nic juice and insuring it was made in a clean facility,,, we just don't like a safer alternative banned because it replaces something that's bad for you.

Velvet and her hubby had the right idea,,, put in a home filtration system,,, and reverse osmosis is the best. Plastic bottles are made of oil, and it's a bit of a contributing factor in the amount of oil we have to import. I take jugs over to Walmart here and buy from a water filter machine they have there.

An aside,,, it's very expensive to deliver drinking quality water through pipes under a street to every home. If those are public utilities, we have to pay a tax to get that service. Water filtration systems in the home, or machines like our walmart has are a good idea. The fewer bottles of water you have to buy, the better, and don't you at least want to know where it came from, and that it's safe to drink?

Bottled water is a dumb idea... until you consider how horrible the water supply is in many places. I'm lucky. In Portland the water is supplied from one of the purest natural sources in the nation. When I see people drinking bottled water here, it pisses me off. But not everywhere has good water like we do, and so bottled water makes sense in some areas. Ultimately, the problem with bottled water isn't the water. it's the bottles. If it could be sold in easily recyclable or biodegradable containers, the problem would be mostly solved. In home filtration and glass bottles would go a long way toward fixing the problem.

Wait... did you just advocate privatizing the water system?

No no,,, just saying that drinking quality water is a costly endeavor, and raising the point that it requires tax dollars to maintain that sort of quality. A lot can happen between the well and your house. Sometimes there are variations in the quality at the well, too. All I'm saying is that a home filtration system is a good idea,,, at least it is in Wisconsin. I live in a small town, and have attended a number of meetings on the subject. It's one of the biggest endeavors my community takes on.

The city is expected to treat every gallon of water delivered to a house to a very high drinking water standard, and a lot of it is used for showers, toilets, washing clothes, watering lawns, washing cars, etc. That's all I'm trying to point out.

I agree with you on this. I was going to write more on my thread topic but i was up for 26 hours straight and could not think of anything except jiberish.
Yes they could easily make biodegradable plastics, using HEMP or other natural plastics. Call me a hippy or what ever, but hemp is actually very strong even when made into plastics. I also made this thread because of the simularities in the attacks that are being made to bottle water and as to ecigs.

This maybe true that fluoride is not healthy but quanities are so low and for it todo any kind of damage to your body it will take many years of constant drinking of this water.
