Okay, so it is mainly an argument with respect to second-hand-smoke?
I will admit to being mostly clueless when it comes to the science behind that subject.

I do agree that we can frame our argument in ways that avoid such references.

Using such references is an attempt to use their own lie against them.
Which is basically confirming their lie.

I think the main issue is that a lot of us - probably all of us who quit for health reasons - became vapers in the first place because of believing what we were told by the antis. Some of it has a basis in truth, but a lot of it is false or blown way out of proportion - just as they are about e-cigarettes. It's only once we discover the lies being told about e-cigarettes that we start to wonder what else we were lied to about.

To be fair, smoker's rights advocates could cut us a little slack I think - maybe think of us as they would any new advocates, because we are now more open to their message than we would have been only a few months ago. They have to let us learn to walk first and if they just ignore us or even push us down out of frustration, we'll never learn to run. And vapers MUST be open to listening to smoker's rights advocates, because they have been where we are going and could teach us a lot. To be a smoker's advocate in this political climate takes a lot of fortitude, which is probably one reason why e-cig advocates have tried to distance themselves from seeming to be smoking advocates.

Beautifully said, Kristin.

Just found this:
What a drag it is to be an E-cigarette smoker.

The Department of Transportation and the FDA are at war against you.

Call me crazy but I thought that when they banned passive smoking on airlines, (and every place else) I thought it was about the tobacco smoke, the killer they claim.

E-cigarettes, the ones who give off NO second hand smoke, are to be banned shortly on all airlines. Banned? Why? They give off no smoke, just water vapor. What is wrong with a safe alternative?

War against you » Opinion » Moultrie Observer

(I just quoted the first few paragraph because of copyright issues, but you should go and read the full piece.)

As I was reading it, I thought, "How great that a vaper is out there writing an opinion piece!" And then I got to the end . . . it's signed by Dave Pickrell, president and founder, Smokers Fighting Discrimination, Inc., Katy, Tx.

We have more of a common fight, I think, than most of us realize. :)

I am quoting this part of the article:

If you are like me, you may want to write the folks at the Department of Transportation and let them know how badly the politics of this smells. Taking America back was the beginning of what the last election was all about.

Let's write to DOT. Here, by the way, is a link to the letter that AG Cuccinelli wrote after our own storyspnr went to work on her Delegate Chris Peace to pursue the matter. http://www.oag.state.va.us/OPINIONS/2010opns/10-029-Peace.pdf

I am not up to date on what's going on in VA with ecigs as I live in CT. Did this letter from your AG help the cause? Also, may I forward a copy of this letter to our newly elected Senator Blumethal (former CT AG who is against ecigs) or do I need Cuccinelli's permission? IMO Cuccinelli's opnion/letter needs to be in the hands of all gov't officials.

This is a public document, posted on Virginia's web site. Yes, the State Health department removed the notice from their web site that erroneously claimed that e-cigarettes were included in the smoking ban.

Distribute this document far and wide.

You might also want to share your story with the Senator. Describe your struggle, how nothing worked, and that now that there is a product that finally works, people want to take it away. Check out my blog post to see if there is any wording in there that you would like to "borrow" for your own letter. As far as I am concerned, my blog is "open access."

The Truth About Nicotine: E-Cigarettes: Dialog on Flavors and Poisoning Issues

What we really find insulting is when these organizations tell us that we should try the “safe and effective” smoking cessation methods. What they seem to be saying is “We want you to go back to beating your head against the wall.”
