"The
tobacco control programme includes a range of interventions which are designed to achieve two goals - stopping people (particularly children and young people) from starting to smoke and getting those that are smoking to quit," she said.
"A combination of price, smokefree areas, alternative nicotine delivery
devices (
vaping devices), plus social media reminding people about the harms caused by smoking are all contributing to more people quitting and fewer young people starting to smoke."
