Speaking as someone who is still making the transition from analogs to vaping, what bothers me the most about this proposal is not so much the tax as a deterrent to smoking.....if the money collected from the tax went to fund smoking cessation classes and aids then it would make some sense. What they did in 2009 and what the White House is proposing to do now is tax cigarette smokers and use the money to fund programs that have nothing to do with smoking whatsoever (SNAP and free Pre-School).

Here's the problem.....if the higher taxes are geared towards 1) making smoking cost prohibitive for kids and 2) making the higher cost an incentive for current smokers to quit, then if it works and the number of people smoking cigarettes plummets then where are they going to get the money for SNAP and universal free Pre-K?

Go find something else to tax.....something that they aren't trying to eliminate in the process.

My opinion, in a nutshell. The government taxes those things which consumers can't live without...cigarettes. They think that people will pay whatever they have to pay so that they can smoke and up until a month ago...I did! Government is making loads of money off of smokers right? Well, what's gonna happen when the smokers stop smoking and go to vaping? Where will the government get it's money from then? Why I think the FDA is trying to get all up in the e-cigarette business and want to regulate it, that's just a nice word for tax it. They are gonna have to get that money somewhere. FDA steps in, regulates e-cigs, government can now tax the hell out of them, problem solved!

Seems like the USA is starting to follow what Canada has done over the years regarding tobacco taxes. I paid $12.50-13.50 for a pack of Export A's before I quit in January. Smokeless tobacco cans are $17-20 up here.

I certainly agree that the money should come from elsewhere, like as was mentioned, the rediculous military budget. What the taxes are being used for also seems pretty absurd. Should definitely go towards healthcare.

If they are going to get the money from somewhere, there is no justification in getting it from us.
Having said that, there is a growing number of people who feel there really isn't any justification for getting any more money, period.

On the other hand, cigarette taxes are like crack ....... to these people.
And when they start losing all that money, they WILL have to get it from somewhere else.

But it shouldn't be us.

The analog smokers are fast going away, the government is just following our addiction, like I said, they know we have to have it and they know where to find us. :( Sad fact but true.
It seems to me they would make a whole heck of a lot more money taxing fast food, sodas, candy, salt, and whatever else they deem unwholesome.
I can't help but think they know this, but are just too scared of the backlash to go there yet.

They need to soften us up first, by demonizing such products like they demonized cigarettes and smokers.
Mayor Bloomberg is already working on following this plan.

So when they come after us, we need to show them that the backlash we will give them will give them a black eye.
They don't like black eyes because they want to look like heroes protecting us from ourselves.

We need to make them look like they are monsters trying to take away that which has saved our lives.
If we can succeed in doing that, this fight will be over.

I'm with you, pick on someone else for a change, this is getting old! But the sad thing is, they are coming after us and the non-smokers will be cheering them on because the government will be leaving them and all their nonsense alone. Makes me crazy, it really does.
This is why we need to get our families, friends, and coworkers behind us.
Saving lives holds more weight than getting taxed a few pennies on a Snickers bar.

This is just cowardly, and I'm a Democrat.

I can almost understand tobacco taxes for thing like health care and anti-tobacco education, but singling out an unpopular group and forcing them to pay taxes on something completely unrelated to the product they're buying is just an example of tyranny of the majority, and it annoys the living hell out of me.
