After brushing up on my basic electrical and plumbing skills switching out the ex-GF's well pump pressure relay switch... I stopped by a new fast food place called Del Taco that I noticed the other day, before heading home.
I got their Carne Asada Wet Burrito Plato ( platter ). Being the frugal person I am ( aka Mr. Cheapskate )... first thing I noticed was the price of it was about $1.50 higher than a similar platter from Taco Bueno. Still, I was curious enough to want to try it anyway so I ordered up one to go.
I tried the refried beans first and was really impressed... they were almost perfect with the only thing I could pick on was that they needed a little more water or fat to them to loosen them up just a bit, certainly not enough to even nock half a star off of them.
Next I tried the rice... I was leary about seeing just white rice and after tasting them... rightfully so. It was just plain white rice with a hint of flavoring I couldn't quite guess at ( and wasn't really fond of either ) and had some chopped tomatoes sprinkled over the top. Simply put, with a mexican or tex-mex meal... it should be mexican rice or at least dirty brown rice. The only thing going for the rice... it was cooked just about as perfect as you want in a white rice.
Now to try the main coarse... that burrito. It was a healthy size.. just guessing about a 4" x 7" size burrito... they didn't skimp on size. I had a nice meaty looking red sauce and shredded cheese on it along with about 3-4 healthy slices of avocado laying across the top. Inside the flour tortilla I found marinated grilled skirt steak ( or flank, possibly iron ) instead of just ground beef like many fast food joints have. The spice had a little kick to it, without being overly hot... another difference from most of the fast food joint. All in all.. a very tasty burrito that I did enjoy.
Overall.. other than the rice... I'd say it was worth the extra money vs what Taco Bueno has... Having said that, Me being frugal... would probably stop me from revisiting them again. The other less costly items... ie standard types of burritos, tacos etc... may be worth trying but the platters are just a little too pricey for me if I was going to a fast food joint.
