Saw something today on the leading edge of the approaching cold front and the wind speed was highlighted in the graphic. You could really see that C shape front suggesting tornadic circulation, and they highlighted the leading wind speeds in red. Pretty scary chit indeed.

Hey RD, what kind of options do you have available to portray wind speed? As in a graphic or color gradient? I'd like to have something like that to reference.

Using mosty programs that run from my computer and get the data from sources like NWS... I'm not sure what to suggest since I think you are running a Mac and I'm running Windows. Try looking in the App Store for an app called MyRadar. It's a radar app but it also has a cool moving wind graphic. It uses a national composite map which won't be as detailed as a single site type but you can zoom into an area. Another really good radar only app that I do know is available on Mac, iPhones and Android devices is called Radarscope. Radarscope is radar only though, so no weather or satellite images, but it's primarily a single site radar app with access to most of the high res radar products.

Also, do you have water vapor options too? I'm sure you do. Water vapor graphics just reveal SO much.

Now... web based... I'm going to recommend the website for the College of DuPage which has analysis tools, satellite and radar ( so they've got water vapor sat images etc ) and even some weather model stuff you can look through.

See the COD website here COD Meteorology -- NexLab Homepage

That sounds like one of the standard radar velocity products of which there are two types... the base velocity and storm relative velocity. Both use the same radar velocity product... the BV one has the velocities displayed as relative to the radar site and the SRV is relative to the storm speed motion and direction. These typically are displayed using green and red colors.... the green indicates winds moving towards the radar site and red are winds moving away from it. I usually use it for detecting tornado couplets as shown in the example below. Wind gust fronts also show up much like what you were describing and could be either green or red depending on wind direction.

Typically, these are setup with a smooth color gradient of reds and greens with the lower speeds being less bright and higher speeds brighter. I customized my own... mine isn't as linear as most you will see. On mine, speeds less than 30-40mph in either direction are muted much more than typical... this lets the higher speeds often seen in tornadoes and gust fronts to stand out more. In addition, once a certain speed is reached.. I switch colors to highlight them even more.

Here is the El Reno tornado from May 31, 2013 shown on one of the velocity products ( I think it was the SRV but I can't recall now ). This was before the other tornadoes started developing so it's just one cell I'm showing here. The couplet really stands out where the tornado is located. Remember that the winds are circulating... so some winds are going towards and some away from the direction of the radar site, this is what makes the couplet stand out like this.

I primarily use a radar program ( Windows only ) called GrLevel3. I can add what is called placefiles to my radar program and display things like wind barbs, temps and other bits of info. Most of these are static and when I put the radar in motion showing past and current data ... the placefiles are static and don't change. So you wouldn't see wind speed/direction changes or temps etc. In this latest update I got, it does now support placefiles that can change over time... but few placefile providers have updated their products to support it ( it was just released for my program last Thursday, so that will take a lot of time to see placefiles get updated ).

There is another program that does radar ( Level 3 like mine as well as high def Level 2 radar ), mesoanalysis, weather models, satellite and other things called WSV3 Pro. It has a lot of stuff but costs around $400 also. I've posted some graphics from it in the past but it was a trial version. I'll post another with wind and WV sat images later after getting to work ( I'm currently late now )
